1 Hampton Roads Republican Women s Club Newsletter 2017 President s Message Susan Yungbluth, President H appy Mother's Day to all Republican Women! I hope that you are pampered more than usual by your children as you celebrate Motherhood and the gift that it is. The months fly by and I find myself beginning with a near empty calendar that is chock full before I turn the page for the next month. April was a little different. We knew we would have a busy month and we did! Our fundraiser for Heather Cordasco at the Hornsby House in Yorktown was very successful for her. The Women's Club members who baked, set -up and served, and cleaned up are greatly appreciated. Thanks to Lou Call, Pat Woodbury, Dawn Glavin, Maureen Kersteatter, and Mary Ann Canale. It was a lot of work that fell to a few people but we know that Heather is grateful for our efforts. There will be other opportunities for more of you to get involved. Our meetings are great, but we need to do more if we want November to be successful at the polls. Please dig deep and find one event that you can help with between now and then. Speaking of which, there is a primary election June 13, 2017 for Governor and Lt. Governor. Our Attorney General candidate is unopposed in the person of John Adams, a very competent selection. Workers will be needed outside the polls on election day the more people the less hours you have to spend. Perhaps the greatest contribution you could make is to be sure ALL your family and friends vote turnout is key in these elections. Our surprise guest in April, Sen. Frank Wagner will be running against Ed Gillespie and Corey Stuart. Lt. Governor's race pits Sen. Jill Vogel, Sen. Bryce Reeves, and Del. Glenn Davis all able and willing to serve the Commonwealth in another capacity. Reward their efforts with your vote! As your Club President, I cannot endorse a candidate until the Primary selection, however you are all welcome to begin putting up yard signs, bumpers stickers and the like for your choice. Name recognition is key to low information voters. End of April brought Lou Call, Maureen Kersteatter, Kristine Plummer and myself to Roanoke for the VFRW convention. A beautiful setting and some tumultuous votes made it a lovely and challenging weekend. In the end we came together to place 2 members on the State Central Committee and take care of business for the important coming year. It's always good to see our friends from around the state. Consider attending in Richmond next year the more the merrier! Don't forget to bring your pocketbooks filled with female personal items to the May meeting so Pat Coile can deliver them to the Menchville House for Mother's Day. And next month's community effort will be deodorant and flip flops for men of the Peninsula Rescue Mission for Father's Day. I will be visiting my own mom in NJ the weekend of our meeting, but you will be in good hands with Pat Woodbury presiding. Enjoy and thanks ahead of time for all you do to Make America Great Again!

2 The 2017 VFRW Convention held April 28-30, 2017 Hosted by Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center Attended by Susan Yungbluth, Lou Call, Maureen Kirsteatter & Kristine Plummer Members attending were VFRW Board Members Susan Yungbluth, Club President; Lou Call, VFRW 3rd District Representative; and Convention Delegates and Sergeant at Arms Maureen Kirsteatter and Kristine Plummer. It was a busy and jam packed weekend. The candidates running for Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General were there or represented by a spokesperson. Attended workshops and break-out sessions and, of course, the Hospitality Rooms. Many great speakers, but one of the most interesting was Lieutenant Joe Kenda, an accomplished and well-known retired Colorado Springs Police Department investigator. Lieutenant Kenda has a television series on Investigation Discovery channel titled Homicide Hunter - Lt. Joe Kenda. Third District Rep. Lou Call was responsible for the 11 District Baskets. Tickets were sold by the district reps and buyers dropped their tickets in the basket bags of their choices to win and on Sunday a ticket from each district bag was drawn for winners. Over $1500 was collected for this VFRW fundraiser. Susan and Maureen each won a basket. 3 Third Congressional District Forum Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Isle of Wight, Newport News Norfolk, Portsmouth & Suffolk On Saturday, May 6 th, the Virginia Republican 3rd Congressional District Committee hosted a forum with the three candidates vying for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor: Del. Glenn Davis, Sen. Bryce Reeves, and Sen. Jill Vogel. The event was held at Charlie Daniel s Racing in Smithfield. Emceeing the event was Jimmy Ray Dunn and the moderator was Jim Hoeft of Bearing Drift. Asking the questions were Tony Clark of Tidewater News and Windsor Weekly, Travis Fain of The Daily Press, and Diana McFarland of The Smithfield Times and the audience! After the event, Travis and Tony gave their thoughts on how the debate went and then each candidate also had their opportunity to make their case to voters as to why you should vote for them. To listen to a PODCAST of the event, go to BearingDrift.com May 29 th we celebrate Memorial Day, a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Please join us on Friday, May 26 th, when volunteers will decorate and proudly place American Flags in Military Cemeteries. HRRWC volunteers will be meeting at Hampton National Cemetery, Emancipation Drive, in Hampton at 7:00 AM. Bring a bottle of water, wear a hat and layer your clothes, wear flat walking shoes and don t forget your sun glasses and sun screen. For placing of the flags, bring a large bag or sack (fabric bag is best) for carrying your bundle of flags. Bring a pair of yard gloves, a small hammer and if you have a little block of wood, it will help to get the small flag stick hammered into the ground without splitting. You will want to carry two rows of flags, one up and one back; so you can pick up another bundle at the flag boxes positioned on the drive way. Mostly, don t forget to say, Thank You at each tombstone. Pat Coile will be heading up our group. If you would like to help place the flags, contact Pat.

4 On April 20 th Hampton Roads RWC and David & Rene Bowditch sponsored a Campaign Kick Off fundraiser at the Hornsby House Inn.
