The Village of Fayetteville and the Greater Manlius Chamber of Commerce are pleased to announce this year s Currier and Ives Holiday Weekend will be held on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, November 26, 27, and 28. Back this year will be the annual tree lighting in Fayetteville, the horse drawn wagon rides, the Dickens character actors, Santa, Frosty, Rudolph and all the other great activities that are part of this fun filled weekend. Be part of this great weekend - Become a sponsor for $50 and have your businesses name printed on all materials and signage. Friday, November 19 deadline. Chamber members and crafters sign up to be part of the Sellebration at the Shoppes at the Fayetteville Towne Center on Saturday, November 27 from 10:00-4:00 pm. The cost is $30 for a 6 foot table and $15 for a shared 6 foot table. Friday, November 12 deadline. Advertise your business in the goodie bags that will be handed out throughout the weekend. 2 2 PRESIDENT S NOTES... New Season, New Members, New Events, New Excitement! Autumn is here and winter is just around the corner, and we are having a GREAT year in the Greater Manlius area...thanks to all of you! New businesses are opening and joining our organization, old friends are having us over for a meeting, or a business after hours, and we have some SPEC- TACULAR events planned for the next two months. I hope you will join us for the Elected Officials meeting on November 11Th. A chance for the local business community to hear first hand what our electeds are doing and what the state of our area is. Then the Currier & Ives Holiday EVENT- this year featuring all The best of years past, AND a Celebration- where your business can be a part of the excitement at the Shoppes at Town Center in Fayetteville, on the busiest weekend of all- the weekend after Thanksgiving! If you cannot attend, no worries! We are giving away 500 "goodie bags" to shoppers, just get your 500 items, coupons, etc to the Chamber office and take advantage of this FREE service. Lastly- as we head into the Holiday season, I want to thank all of you. I am very thankful for each and every chamber member who has helped to make the Greater Manlius area a better place. Marc Marc Baum President GMCOC MEMBER OF THE MONTH OVEN ARTISTRY These cookies are too beautiful to eat! This is a common comment when people first see Barb Randall s wonderful cookies. Oven Artistry creates artistic cookies that balance the fine line between pretty and flawless masterpieces of art. Imagine a cut out sugar cookie in the shape of a maple leaf. Barb will agree, but then tell you that once you have admired it you have to eat it because it is so good! Oven Artistry was started in Barb had originally learned the art of making delicious cookies at her mother s side as a child. Her mother thought a cookie should have taste, texture and visual appeal. Those lessons were carried with Barb as she moved on with life up to her job as a nurse. She said the business was conceived from a tray of cookies she brought to an office party. Coworkers were so impressed they started placing orders. Barb transformed a family room in her home into a commercial kitchen and Oven Artistry was born. The kitchen now holds all the baking essentials, plus over a thousand cookie cutters. She has regular cookie cutters in all shapes and sizes and intricate cookie presses. The cookie menu includes the cut out sugar cookies, tea cookies in two sizes that have pressed images and, what Barb calls, oven bites. Oven bites are delicious cookies such as Maizie Fingers, jam filled Thumbprints, Lemonade Clouds, Peanut Butter, Lavender Blue, Kool Fruit, Sunset, Cappuccino Royale, Biscotti and Wowwees. Her cookies have been ordered from all over the country. The airline, Jet Blue has ordered Barb s cookie. Cookies in the shape of a show ticket were ordered for the cast of Young Frankenstein on Broadway in New York City. Martha Stewart and Rosie O Donnell were also the recipients of these delectable cookies. People order these cookies for special events such as bridal showers, baby showers, wedding day favors with the bride and groom s names and the date written on each cookie, birthdays, there are any number of reasons to celebrate. How about impressing a client with a handpainted business card cookie? Oven Artistry has supplied cookies for libraries, retirement parties, pharmaceutical reps, sorority meetings, swim teams, schools, jazz events; it would be hard to stump Barb. Each cookie is made from fresh ingredients in small batches in order to maintain the taste and textures. Barb likes to have people call her or contact her through her Facebook page. This is a very personal purchase and she enjoys helping someone choose just the right cookie for their event. It brings Barb great pleasure seeing people enjoy the cookies she creates. What seemed sophisticated back then might now look simplistic and even unprofessional compared with other, more effective sites. In this age of limited attention spans, it s also essential that your Web site catch and keep visitors interest. Try adding interactive features such as surveys, guest books, auto responders, downloadable documents and an e-newsletter. Your current Web host may offer some of these capabilities. And why not take orders online with a simple shopping cart feature, if you don t already? Resources include PrestoCart.com, MyCart.net, PayButton.com and EarthStores.com. Animated art, professionally designed buttons, bars and banners can help supercharge your site. You can acquire them quickly and inexpensively with software and online delivery from providers such as NetStudio.com and ScreamDesign.com. You can add interesting and timely content to your site as well. Consider hiring a freelance writer to produce original news, feature and how-to articles for your site that are related to your business. Putting fresh content up monthly could cost as little as a few hundred dollars. The Web offers tremendous potential for researching your markets and competitors. A few top resources some free, others fee based include: Business.com for general business research, KnowX.com for public records research and Hoovers.com for company profiles and contact information. Even if you have the best Web site in your industry, nobody will find it unless it listed with the major Internet search engines. SearchEngineWatch.com offers a wealth of information about raising your search engine profile via search engine submissions, as well searching tips, search engine reviews and ratings, and other resources.
