It was entered in the Best Marketing Materials category. also took the First Runner-Up Best of Show for its publication Get Out Chattanooga entered in the Best Niche Product category. Second Runner-Up Best of Show went to the Robertson County Times, Springfield, for its Ring in the Holiday ad for Holman Jewelers in the Best Sales Promotion for a Retailer category. (See photo and entry on page 12.) had the most awards at 48, with the Carthage Courier and The Greeneville Sun each taking home the next highest Best of Show first runner-up, Chattanooga Times Free Press number of awards at 20 each. took the most first place awards at 17, followed by the Citizen Tribune, Morristown, with nine. In all, 716 entries from 28 newspapers were submitted in the 2013 Ideas Contest, which has 29 categories divided into five circulation divisions. Members of the North Carolina Press Association judged the contest on March 28 in Pinehurst, N.C. The late Jack Freeland, for whom the Best of Show Award is named, was advertising manager of The Daily Herald, Columbia, and was active with the TPA Advertising Committee. The Ideas Contest was established in Proceeds help to offset the education programming costs for the Advertising/Circulation Conference. Conference attendees received the slide show of winners on a flash drive. The presentation has been sent to all newspapers that entered the contest. EDWARDS Managing editor Natalie Alund, a former reporter with the News Sentinel, Knoxville, took the top prize in the annual Golden Press Card competition of the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists. Alund The chapter, affiliated with the national Society of Professional Journalists, based in Indianapolis, Ind., has held the competition for close to 40 years. Awards were presented May 10 at the University of Tennessee Visitors Center in Knoxville. ETSPJ president Kristi Nelson Bumpus presided. Brandon Hollingsworth, WUOT-FM Radio, board member, introduced on-air institution Hubert Smith, host of 90.3 FM-Radio s Hubert Smith Radio Show, who emceed the awards presentations. Alund, a Pittsburgh, Pa. native, has since taken a job with the Media News Group and Oakland Tribune and lives in San Francisco. GOLDEN PRESS CARD AWARD Winner Natalie Alund, News Sentinel, Knoxville, Driving high Judges said: This investigation into the impacts of driving under the influence was extensive in its detail, data and personal narrative. The four-part series explored several different perspectives of driving under the influence and left readers with a comprehensive understanding of this important issue. Great photos and graphics accompanied the stories to help set the pace and give more access to the information. Superb job. HORACE V. WELLS JR. Brian Sonntag, who retired earlier this year after serving five terms as the elected state auditor in Washington, has been selected for induction into Heroes of the 50 States: The State Open Government Hall of Fame. An induction ceremony took place May 18 at a luncheon during the 2013 FOI Summit in New Orleans, La. The Hall of Fame is a joint venture of the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Freedom of SPJ, NFOIC name Hero of the 50 States Information Coalition. The 13th individual chosen for the honor since the Hall s inception in 2003, Sonntag is the second inductee in a row from Washington and only the third elected official to be included. Induction into the State Open Government Hall of Fame recognizes long and steady effort to preserve and protect the free flow of information about state and local government that is vital to the public in a democracy. Peter Bhatia, editor of The Oregonian and a member of the selection committee, praised Sonntag as a public official who gave two decades to making government more open to the citizens of his state.
