3 2017 HONOREES 9 th Annual Loving Civil Rights Award: Nikole Hannah-Jones Named for the couple that fought the ultimate form of housing discrimination when they were barred from living in Virginia because of their interracial marriage, the Mildred and Richard Loving Civil Rights Award honors civil rights leaders and thinkers, those who have worked to change the course of history, those who have challenged how history is written, and those who are making history today. Every year, we honor figures who we feel have contributed to the national dialogue on housing, racial disparity, and civil rights. The Connecticut Center is proud to present the 2017 Loving Civil Rights Award to Nikole Hannah- Jones. Ms. Hannah-Jones is an award-winning investigative journalist covering racial injustice for the New York Times Magazine. Her work has been featured in ProPublica, NPR, The Atlantic, and many other national publications. Photo Credit: Kathy Ryan, New York Times She has spent much of her career investigating the way racial segregation in housing and schools is maintained through official action and policy. In 2016, her episodes of NPR s This American Life on school segregation won a Peabody Award. She is also the co-founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. The Center is honored to present Ms. Hannah-Jones with the 2017 Loving Civil Rights Award in recognition of her commitment to exposing what housing and school segregation looks like in the 21 st century.
