Over 400 teens and volunteer leaders participated in the 69th Tennessee 4-H Congress in Nashville. Participants learned about state government, held mock legislative sessions, met with their state legislators, competed for awards and scholarships in leadership, citizenship and public speaking, and made friends for life with other 4-Her s from across the state. Thanks to our county, regional, and state extension staff, volunteers and donors for making this a successful event.

2 REMINDER: JUANITA H. FASO LA FOUNDATION, INC. MINI-GRANTS AVAILABLE The Juanita H. Fasola Foundation has announced the availability of mini-grants for the purpose funding educational programs for youth and young adults in basic life skills and home economics. The Fasola Foundation funds projects focusing on consumer education and nutrition; cookery; clothing; sewing; textiles; parental education and childcare; hygiene; health care management; household economics and management; household equipment; house cleaning; and housing. The Foundation is also interested in funding projects which offer educational training and opportunities for the learning disabled, including but not limited to dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, speech auditory disorders, and/or educational rehabilitation. If you have questions, please contact Ryan Hensley at or for more information. The 4-H Foundation merely collects and submits grant applications and has no influence on the selection process. Successful applications will be announced in 4-H Ideas when the 4-H Foundation is notified which, if any, applications were selected. There is no maximum or minimum grant level; however, most grants from the Fasola Foundation are funded at $10,000 or less. Grant applications will be accepted until Today, Friday, April 1. 3 4-H PERFORMING ARTS TROUPE 4-H Congress leadership and citizenship finalists, public speaking competitors, Congress officers and members of the 4-H performing arts troupe recently put on a fantastic show at the opening assembly of 4-H Congress. This opening pageant featured songs and stories which told the story of our great state. Many youth attending 4-H Congress expressed interest in auditioning for the 4-H Performing Arts Troupe. Those who are interested (must be in grades 8 11 as of January 1, 2016), please note the deadline is April 8, In order to apply, the individual must submit a Youtube video. The video must include the statement of the 4-H member s name, county and category (vocal or dance) at the beginning. The applicant should use the same website ( tiny.utk.edu/troupe) to submit their pre-recorded audition videos. Each vocalist and/or dancer, whether applying in person or online, must include two selections with at least one having musical accompaniment. One of the selections may be a group performance where they are clearly identified. It is also desirable for all vocal applicants to include at least one selection that includes movement and dance. 6 STATE 4-H POSTER Ten 4-H members did an outstanding job designing posters this year! The winning posters were selected from a total of 221 entries from across the state. The following members have state-winning 4-H Poster Art entries: Alexis Day, Polk Joshua Jones, Morgan Chad Miller, Hamilton Ella Flynn, Macon Kennedy Sanders, Maury Eli Fisk, Lincoln Bailey Steger, Putnam Katherine Thierfelder, Madison Mary Wilson, Crockett Lynden Cole, Crockett These ten posters were on display during Tennessee 4-H Congress in Murfreesboro, March The contest is sponsored by the Former University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture Workers Association. 9 4-H CONGRESS SERVICE PROJECT A SUCCESS The 2016 Tennessee 4-H Congress delegates did some amazing work over the past couple of months as they collected 14,344 Easter items for Metro Parks and Recreation. Metro Parks, which serves each community in Nashville and Davidson provides resources and educational opportunities for youth and adults in the Metro Nashville area. Ms. Barbara Manuel, director of the Hadley Park Community Center, was on hand at 4-H Congress to accept the items. These Easter items benefited over 700 youth and senior citizens who participated in Metro Parks Easter activities. Justin Crowe Extension Specialist 4-H, ALEC PAPER CLOVER IS COMING Justin Crowe, Extension Specialist; 4-H, ALEC Just a reminder that the spring H paper clover initiative is right around the corner, scheduled for April 13 24, Hopefully you have already begun promoting this initiative in your county in hopes of getting 4-H supporters to visit your local Tractor Supply Store and buy a paper clover (or 20 paper clovers!). 10 MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD From deployments to new schools, military children are faced with unique challenges that ordinary youth their age never experience. Their ability to adapt to present and future changes deserves our respect and admiration. In an effort to recognize the hard work- and applaud- the courage of military children, the Department of Defense (DOD) has deemed April as the Month of the Military Child (MOMC). It is a time to honor military youth for the important role they play in contributing to the strength of their family. Hopefully, your local 4-H club is doing something to celebrate the military child! Even if they are not planning a specific event, please be sure to thank any military child you come in contact with!
