3 A Message from your president Greetings Allentown Chapter members! I am very excited to be appointed the new President, as of September 1, 2012, of this awesome chapter in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Dave Wrigley was wonderful to stay on as chapter President until the end of August while I dealt with a situation I had on the home front. I feel very blessed to have had Dave as my mentor for the past two plus years, as I watched him lead our chapter with grace and integrity. I will work to keep these values he set during his leadership. We have additional and exciting changes in our board. I would like to recognize a few members who are outgoing and incoming on the board and the directors. LeeAnn Slattery of ATAS International is now the President Elect, and the chairperson of our annual product Expo. She has done great things for our chapter and many more great things to come from her. I welcome Jon Lattin, of Key Resin, onto the board as Vice President. Jon has also been serving as the hospitality chair and is responsible for the amazing events over the past few years. A huge thank you to Mark Nattress, ModernFold of Reading, for his 20 plus years of being the treasurer of our chapter. He was excellent in keeping the loot balanced, and he has stepped down from this position. Welcome to Roxanne Verrastro, General Supply, into the treasurer s seat on the board. It is wonderful to have her actively back on the board. Both Mark and Roxanne have served as chapter s presidents and continue to be incredible assets to us. The goals I have set to accomplish are to continue the focus Dave Wrigley had set in terms of excellence in programs, unique and fun events, member involvement, and cross-industry association involvement with groups such as DVGBC, AIA, IFMA, ABC, MABX and others. I am also looking at creating a unique experience for members during the regular monthly meetings. Something so exciting and fun that you will tell your friends how crazy your CSI evening was and they have to come to the next meeting to join in!! Get ready to be challenged on your technical skills! The institute is moving forward in an exciting direction, and our chapter is as well. With many wonderful things on the horizon, I look forward to advancing your CSI experience into a memorable and important part of our career. We are always open to your suggestions and help. See you soon at a meeting or CSI event. Best Regards, Tina Montone, CSI CSI Allentown Chapter President, 2012/2013 3

4 Insights Technical Micah J. Hessinger, CSI, CDT Technical Chair It s taken me some time to figure out exactly how I wanted to approach technical articles for our chapter. So many of you represent products and know them inside out, others specify them every day and do tons of research to develop workable systems integrating each of these products. Even 15 short years ago the field of products was much more limited than it is today, and it seems to be growing exponentially each year. I m always amazed at how well those of you who represent or specify these products understand them. Let me give you a little different spin on things. I sit on the opposite side of this table. I try to estimate and then build exactly what the rest of you are representing or specifying. This isn t as easy as it sounds. When you communicate strictly through documents, a lot of things get missed or misinterpreted. It s tough enough understanding one another using the English language remove that from the equation and replace it with pictures and technical documents and it becomes a giant game of charade s! At least that s how it looks from my perspective THE PUNCHLIST Have news, local project or great article? Submit it to the Punchlist! Submit new ideas, news, projects or articles to: TINA MONTONE (610) mtone1@ptd.net YOUR INPUT IS APPRECIATED All that being said, we all have one goal in mind, and that is to provide our client with the best possible product that will perform as required for our client s end use. As a professional estimator it s important to me to accurately price specifically what the owner and architect want. It s not always the easiest thing to do. The architect and product rep believe that they have everything perfectly documented. Unfortunately, many times it looks like Greek to those of us trying to price and build it. investigation, I ll learn a little bit too, so that I can more accurately price the materials that the architects and owners want. I m always looking for new products to research as well, so if anyone else has any ideas, feel free to share them with me and I ll be happy to do some research and write an article or two on it! Sincerely, Over the next couple of months I will be providing technical articles on specific products that we are currently using on some of our projects. I ll also get into some of the miscommunication and misunderstandings that occur between owners, architects, and contractors and how we strive to creatively resolve these situations to benefit all parties. Maybe, with a little luck, through this Micah J. Hessinger, CSI, CDT Technical Chair 4

5 Institute news From CONSTRUCT 2012 Eric Lussier, CSI If CONSTRUCT 2010 in Philadelphia was getting my feet wet (with an exhibit hall pass only) and 2011 in Chicago was jumping in head first (with a full education package) then I would view CONSTRUCT 2012, held in Phoenix from September 11th 14th as a leisurely paddle down a stream, even if it did host my first Gala. for the past 3+ years. However over the last year the relationships have certainly taken off with roots being firmly planted on a laptop screen, or on my smartphone or tablet. Social Media may be the new cold call, but it s also the new water cooler, bar stool, message board, and blind date all mixed into one. As a relative introvert, I have found it becoming increasingly more difficult to meet people as the The week approached incredibly fast and passed years progress. Having been a lone employee who just as quickly. Looking back now, 2 weeks after works from a home office over the last four years in returning to PHL from PHX, I can summarize the week Pennsylvania, CSI has become my neighborhood with one word: comfortable. This would certainly bar, coffee shop, library and grocery store. It doesn t not be the case without the people that make up the seem to matter the persons occupation, economic Construction Specifications Institute CSI. Without status or firm seniority, by just being a CSI member, these people the conference could be clunky, lonely, you have something immediate and important in perhaps even boring. However, it is none of the common. above because of what the members bring to the Institute and to the Conference. So I could continue and talk about the wonderful city that Phoenix was how the food was great, the From the greeters at the Phoenix Convention Center, people were terrific and the amenities were fantastic to the team members of Hanley Wood, to the or about how great the CONSTRUCT presentations presenters and exhibitors at CONSTRUCT and most and exhibit hall was and it would all be true. But importantly to the attendees of the Conference, my to me, PHX was about the people. The incredible week in Phoenix was like slipping into your favorite crew from CSI Allentown that were there with me sweatshirt during the first chill of fall comfortable. now Fellow Mitch Miller, our current President From seeing old friends (those that I know from Tina Montone, Lee Ann Slattery, Rob Sarnowski, Tim way back in the day in Philly 2010) to meeting new Sisock, Sal Verrastro, Dave Fenstermacher to fellow PA friends that were just an avatar in my Twitter-based CSI folk John Groff, Bill Brightbill, Jan Meyers, Charlie world until recently, CONSTRUCT has become the CSI Beauduy and Mike Lechleitner there were plenty of water cooler for me the place that I go to connect now local friends that I got to see over 2000 miles with everyone IRL in real life. from home. Factor these folk in with the previously mentioned Twitter folk that I got to meet for the very Social Media, while seemingly having taken off in first time and top them off with being able to spend the last year, has been an important part of my life some time with Joy Davis (THE woman behind the CSI Social Media community) and I deem CONSTRUCT PHX 2012 an absolute success. Nashville 2013 is on my calendar (as it should be with yours September 24th 27th) and I d hate to make time go by any faster then it already is, but I can t wait for it to get here! Between now and then, I hope to see you at a meeting. 5

7 Chapter news RAISE THE ROOF CSI Family Night at the Da Vinci Science Center Jon Lattin, CSI, CCPR Hospitality Co-Chair Instant ice cream anyone? On Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 40 Members, Spouses, and Guests (half of which were kids!) of the Allentown Chapter CSI enjoyed a family picnic at the DaVinci Science Center in Allentown. The science center was host to a special exhibit titled Raise the Roof, sponsored by ATAS. This exhibit provided visitors with insight into the built environment including columns that buckle at the pull of a string, a magnetic town for preschoolers to build and rebuild, and a dome that visitors can raise and collapse around them. After a wonderful barbeque dinner, the evening was capped off by a liquid nitrogen demonstration. Exploding rubber balls and instant vanilla ice cream were the highlights and enjoyed by everyone!
