2 Page 2 Mar 2016 The word March dates back to the Roman calendar. March was named for Mars, the Roman god of war. March was the first month of the year until the Gregorian calendar began to be used in March was called Hlyda or Lide in Old English which is a reference to loud winds. An old proverb says... March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb which is a reference to the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Some of the popular events or holidays in March are St. Patrick s Day (17th), First Day of Spring (Spring or March Equinox), Daylight Savings Time, and if Easter happens to fall in March - Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Aquamarine and bloodstone are the birthstones for March. Both stones stand for courage. There are different reports about the true birth flower. Some say it is the daffodil (narcissus) and others the violet. Coca-Cola was introduced on March 29th in The Eiffel Tower in Paris officially opened on March 31st March starts on the same day of the week as November every year.
