The radio airwaves seem relatively calm after being pushed and pulled so hard during the many, many months of political campaigning. As usual, public broadcasting was quite illuminating in the fuller firmament of political reporting. Also as usual, it was a little awkward to have Big Bird (funding for public broadcasting) thrust back into the campaign limelight again. KUNM s News Department did a strong job of reporting on the campaigns, most notable with the Voices Behind the Vote series. I was pleased that we could showcase the diversity and complexity of people here in New Mexico who voted in November s election. The series is well worth your time if you missed hearing all of the segments. I am already missing the KUNM Conservation Beat reporting we featured all year on KUNM. In November, we exhausted our funds to pay Reporters Megan Kamerick and Laura Paskus to focus exclusively on conservation and environmental issues. Our original grant in 2011 from the New Mexico Community Foundation was for $48,500. These funds provided for salary, benefits, travel expenses, and some recording Laura Paskus equipment for a full-time reporter to report on Conservation issues in New Mexico. Sidsel Overgaard was our first Conservation Beat reporter. When she moved with her family to New York, we were fortunate to be able to bring on Megan and Laura (both on a part-time basis) to continue the good work of covering Conservation. All three reporters provided you with high-quality reporting from across the state. To date, we have not found a replacement source for funding Conservation reporting. For certain, we will continue to provide you with important local and regional conservation stories, just not with the same constant focus that a funded Reporting position can bring to our airwaves. 4 continued from Page 3 program on KNME New Mexico PBS. As host of the program, Megan fosters civic dialogue on important issues of the day. Megan has also been selected to be one of the featured speakers at the TEDx ABQWomen event on December 1st at the South Broadway Cultural Center. Per the program, Megan asserts there is an Megan Kamerick urgent call to action for women to speak up and be represented in the media. There is a phenomenon called girl pause. When asked questions, women tend to hesitate for three reasons: they think about the questions and want to give the right answers, they don t want to engage in the conversation, or they don t want to look stupid for being wrong. Also, in November, KUNM Volunteer Katie Stone, host and producer of KUNM s Children s Hour, was named as a recipient in this year s Women in Technology Awards. The New Mexico Technology Council gives the annual awards to outstanding women in technology, business and education. This year, 32 women from around the state were Katie Stone nominated by their peers and a panel of three judges outstanding women in technology themselves chose the nine winners. Katie s work with young people every Saturday morning is a real, live broadcast adventure fit for the young and young at heart. But we all really love winning, which is why we introduced some FUN in our FUNdraising by adding pledge drive prizes on occasion. Espejos de Aztlan Yet the media sensationalism glossed over long-standing environmental and development problems confronting a largely Spanish-speaking community. In a half-hour documentary, journalist Kent Paterson explores how water, toxic waste, a big landfill and controversies over environmental racism have shaped Sunland Park s history. Hear longtime residents, elected officials, border scholars and environmental justice activists on issues that will define the future of not only of a growing border town, but New Mexico and beyond in the coming years as well. New Mexico People Places and Ideas: How Children Succeed. Paul Tough, who has written extensively about education, child development and poverty, is the author of the just published book, How Children Succeed. There could not be a more important subject for New Mexico, which just fell from 46th to 49th in overall child welfare. Only Mississippi fares worse on indicators such as high school dropouts, concentrated childhood poverty, and teen drug abuse, etc. So, in our first of 2 related shows, we ask something you may have wondered about: why do some children succeed while others fail? The school system s answer seems to be test scores. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control. Paul will introduce listeners to a new generation of researchers and educators who rely on scientific studies to develop innovative interventions that allow children who grow up in the most painful circumstances to achieve amazing things. The story: It is Hanukkah, and Sara, dragged to a party by her mother, finds playing with the dreydls (little spinning tops which are part of Hanukkah s festivities) boring... that is, until Tante Miriam gives her an ancient golden dreydl. During a squabble over possession of the dreydl, the television screen and the dreydl are broken, revealing the magical worlds hidden within both of them. From the broken dreydl a princess emerges who leads Sara on a mythical journey (through the smashed T.V. screen). When the princess is captured by the Demon King, Sara, aided by a Fool, must use all her cunning and courage to outwit the Demon King, rescue the princess, and return home again. Through music, interviews, and historical radio clips, this unique program will tell the story of Cuba s massive commitment in Africa, from the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the subsequent independence of Congo, to the end of the Soviet Union in We ll talk to Piero Gleijeses, foreign policy specialist at Johns Hopkins University and author of Conflicting Missions: Havana, Washington, and Africa , and to Marissa Moorman, author of the forthcoming Tuning in to Nation: Radio, State Power, and the Cold War in Angola, , who will share with us rare archival recordings of radio broadcasts featuring the voices of Agostinho Neto, Jonas Savimbi, and others. We celebrate the Christmas season in Bessemer, Alabama where an extraordinary concert took place featuring two vocal traditions with African roots-- South Africa s internationally celebrated Ladysmith Black Mambazo and from Alabama and Tennesee, four leading groups--the Four Eagle Gospel Singers, The Birmingham Sunlights, The Gospel Harmonettes, and The Fairfield Four. A concerned Doctor Scofield pits his persistence against Captain Underhill s initial reluctance in getting him to take up the case. Lacking any eyewitnesses, including the victim herself, Underhill devises a clever plan to entice the mugger, or muggers, into striking again. When his trap succeeds it leads to a shocking courtroom confrontation that both Sherlock Holmes and Perry Mason would have been proud to be part of.
