We are thrilled to celebrate our organization s 25th year and are pleased to offer dynamic programing under our theme, Engagement and Empowerment.

2 Greetings, It is with great pleasure that I cordially invite you (and your family!) to join the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association ( SCWLA ) in Hilton Head, South Carolina on October 19 21, 2018 for our Annual Conference to celebrate SCWLA s 25th Anniversary! We are thrilled to celebrate our organization s 25th year and are pleased to offer dynamic programing under our theme, Engagement and Empowerment. Our keynote speaker is Gloria Allred, an attorney known for fighting on the front lines of women s rights and victims rights for over four decades (see the trailer for her documentary on Netflix here: Other featured speakers include Deb Sofield, acclaimed speaker, author and coach; and Toni Messina, a renowned criminal defense attorney. We are also excited about a presentation on the ABA s Commission on Women in the Profession s Grit Project, which educates women lawyers about the science behind grit and growth mindset - two important traits that many successful women lawyers have in common. Other programing will include presentations on legal marketing, the federal rules and red wine (yes, you read that right!), and how #metoo is impacting the profession. I m also excited to share that this year, we have structured the scheduling of the CLEs a bit differently than in the past. We are cognizant of the great time (and expense) that attending the conference entails, so we have designed the program to both maximize your CLE offerings and allow you time to enjoy what Hilton Head has to offer with your significant other or your family at a reasonable price. As part of your attendance, you will have the ability to participate in several exciting offerings outside of the CLE. We will have early morning yoga for your overall wellness, an afternoon self-defense CLE with hands on instruction, a wardrobe and styling course, and so much more. Your conference registration will also allow you to attend our Annual Awards Ceremony where we will award our prestigious and coveted Jean Galloway Bissell Award. Past recipients of our Bissell Award include retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O Connor; retired United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, Judge Karen J. Williams; and our own retired Chief Justice Jean Toal and Justice Kaye Hearn. Her firm handles more women s rights cases than any other private firm in the nation and has won hundreds of millions of dollars for victims. Ms. Allred also founded and is currently president of the Women s Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund (WERLDEF). Over the course of her 42-year legal career, Gloria Allred has won countless honors for her pioneering legal work on behalf of women s rights and rights for minorities. In 2015 Ms. Allred was honored with the inaugural Elgy Award for her decade s long commitment to secure equality for the LGBT community and most recently Gloria was honored at the 2016 International Women s Forum (IWF) World Leadership Conference with the 2016 IWF Women Who Make a Difference Award. Gloria Allred is also a three-time Emmy nominee for her commentaries on KABC television in Los Angeles. Yoga Complimentary Friday, October 19th Saturday, October 20th Sunday, October 21st 6:00am Led by Anne Caywood. Anne is an attorney by trade who was always seeking balance in her life. A part of that balance was the practice of yoga. Having practiced yoga and meditation for nearly a decade, Anne obtained her RYT Alliance 200 Hour Yoga Instructor Certification with Jiva Yoga in Hilton Head, South Carolina. She currently teaches as Staff for Jiva Yoga at their Hilton Head and Bluffton locations. Anne is also a member of the South Carolina Bar Wellness Committee and is passionate about helping other people manage their stress and anxiety through yoga, meditation and to develop positive strategies for total wellness.

Self-Defense CLE and Class Complimentary SASS Defense: The Fusion of Advocacy and Empowerment Saturday, October 20th Advocating: With Love and Law 3:30pm - Education Presentation (CLE) 1 hr. credit pending (Brett Brown, Lisa Ewart, Shannon Henry) During Advocating: With Love and Law hear from SASS Defense s Director of Education who holds 14 years of experience working with survivors and their families through court systems and hospital visits as well as educational institutions and government agencies to bring about cumulative change that swings the pendulum from intervention to prevention. Hear also from attorney turned Peace Corps volunteer and Executive Director of SASS Go, Lisa Ewart about the importance of evidence collection and preservation and how restraining orders and orders of protection work in various scenarios. Also listen as SASS Go President and Founder, Shannon Henry, defines scenarios that justify the use of self-defense, how to get the help you need immediately following and the resources available whether on campus at USC, traveling in the upstate, visiting your friend in California or on vacation in Italy. Empowerment: Pain into Purpose 4:30pm - Self-Defense Training hr. During Empowerment: Pain into Purpose navigate the waters of surviving assault with SASS Defense CEO Shannon Henry, USC All-American athlete and 3rd year USC law student Olivia Hassler and ESPN s Senior Marketing Director and Vice President of Pathways to Safety, Keri Potts. Hear truly inspiring personal stories of how pain can be turned into purpose despite the adverse effects of trauma. Learn risk reduction tactics that will safeguard you, your family and friends, the thoughts behind the minds of perpetrators and how to advocate for yourself in every relationship you have. Practice moves that maximize your strengths against an attacker s weaknesses in order to neutralize a threat in seconds and get to safety. This is empowerment on steroids for life s worst-case scenarios and everyday struggles. *This is an interactive/hands on demonstration-comfortable clothing and sensible shoes are recommended.
