Gambit/BestOfNewOrleans.com: One Night on St. Claude Avenue Emma Discher, Anna Gaca, Jeanie Riess, March 23, :15 a.m. DJ Soul Sister's Hustle dance party inside Hi-Ho Lounge begins to fill with people hopping from cabs. Allen and Jenny Blow and Chelsea Beaver sip white wine from the lone pub table on the sidewalk. They're self-described burners, attendees of the annual Burning Man event in the Nevada desert, and hold regular events with their regional community. The Blows live a few blocks away and are longtime fans of Soul Sister's WWOZ-FM radio show. The Times-Picayune/NOLA.com: WWOZ Piano Night 2015 talent announced: Robert Glasper Experiment, and more Alison Fensterstock, March 23, 2015 WWOZ has posted the initial lineup for the 27 th edition of Piano Night, the awardwinning community radio station's annual blowout keyboard revue held at the House of Blues on the Monday night between weekends of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. (Fittingly for the show's 27th year, in 2015 that Monday falls on April 27.) The Times-Picayune/NOLA.com: WWOZ Spring Membership Drive features New Orleans Guardians of the Groove Sue Strachan, March 20, 2015 Since 1980, WWOZ FM-90.7 had been a community resource, ensuring that the city's local musicians and other creative souls have an on-air forum to showcase their work. In early March, the radio station held its annual Spring Membership Drive helmed by the membership staff of Crystal Gross, Lauren Del Rio, Melanie Merz, Dimitri Apessos and Duane Williams, as well as volunteers where musicians and bands such as the Stanton Moore Trio, Margie Perez, Dwayne Dopsie, and Davell Crawford, to name just a few, stopped by the station to perform or help out. The culmination was on March 13 with a live broadcast at Kermit's Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge, where the Treme Brass Band, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Kermit Ruffins, himself, performed. Examiner.com: 2015 New Orleans Jazz Festival: Survival Guide, part three, night shows March 20, 2015 House of Blues is a famous venue in the French Quarter and has loads of entertainment during Jazz Fest. 8 15. Press (cont). NolaDefender.com: Finding Mardi Gras Indians on St. Joseph's Night March 19, 2015 WWOZ is also an invaluable asset, broadcasting sightings as they are called in. The Times-Picayune/NOLA.com: Raiders of the Lost Ark or Streetcar Named Desire? Both classics return to big screen, plus more local movie events Mike Scott, March 10, 2015 [Indywood Cinema] will also team with WWOZ for two screenings of director Les Blank s 1973 documentary Hot Pepper (5 and 7 p.m. Sunday, March 15), about zydeco king Clifton Chenier. Irvin Mayfield: New Orleans Commons New Orleans Jazz Playhouse New Orleans: Basin Street Records, 2015, page 103. In New Orleans, our community radio station is a stand-alone icon. WWOZ perfectly captures everything that is free flowing about this city. The disc jockeys are all volunteers, and they get to play whatever they want. Thus, music that normally would not be heard on the radio, let alone embraced, can find an eager, loving audience. Without WWOZ, I never would have learned about pianist James Booker, blues singer Marva Wright, or rock-and-roll man Jessie Hill. I m grateful, too, that WWOZ has introduced my own music to its listeners especially when I was just starting out. Thank you, WWOZ, for giving a young artist a platform when he needed it most. Now, this isn t to stay that WWOZ doesn t frustrate at times. I ve driven home at 4:00 a.m. and heard music on my car radio that sounded like throw-up in my ears. That, however, is a price I m willing to pay, as long as the community gets to hear the music of their choice, the sounds of their heritage. Dave Freedman is the longtime General Manager of the station. He s the last bohemian executive in America, as well as an anti-seasonal dresser. He started WWOZ down the path of online broadcasting long before many other radio stations caught on. I love my community radio station. Without WWOZ, my neighbors wouldn t know what I do for a living. Page 8 of 8
