1 KANKAKEE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 111 BOARD OF EDUCATION MINUTES April 10, 2017 The regular meeting f the Bard f Educatin f Kankakee Schl District N. 111, Kankakee Cunty, Illinis, was held at 6:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpse Rm at Avis Huff Student Supprt Services Center, 369 Nrth Fifth Avenue, Kankakee, Illinis. Superintendent s Reprt Gd News Schl Event Explanatin Grants Dr. Betty Peters-Lambert recently applied fr and received a grant frm the Presidential Yuth Fitness Prgram. The grant is fr $9, (the maximum fr a schl district was $10,000). This grant will prvide the District with the equipment necessary t implement FitnessGram testing with District fidelity at all schls, especially the high schl. Superintendent s Reprt Gd News Dr. Betty Peters-Lambert als applied fr and received the Sft Stick Lacrsse Grant fr KHS. The District will receive the fllwing equipment fr the KHS PE Department: 15 blue sft lacrsse sticks

This investr gave her the cntact infrmatin fr Chris Ruder, a Kennedy Middle Schl alumnus. Mr. Ruder and his brther develped this game and brught it t Shark Tank! A shark invested in Spikeball and it is nw wrld-wide with turnaments ppping up all ver the cuntry. Mr. Ruder is dnating 24 Spikeball games t the District. The retail value is $1,440. The District will als receive free Spikeball prfessinal develpment fr the PE specialist this fall. The games will be distributed t the PE departments as determined by student enrllment. Dr. Walters stated that the District was selected fr the Cmpetency-Based High Schl Graduatin Requirement Pilt Prgram. This prgram allws high schlers t advance at their wn pace. Fr example, a student wh demnstrates mastery f ninth grade English requirements can mve n t 10 th grade English immediately rather than having t wait an entire schl year. The district will develp a detailed plan fr a cmpetency-based learning system and it will be implemented at the high schl during the schl year. Mr. Hensley and Mrs. Shellie addressed the Bard regarding their prpsal n a STEM trip t Bstn in June Principal s Reprt Dr. Cynthia Levy, Principal f IMPACT/CIPS Dr. Levy reprted that the CIPS and IMPACT Prgrams supprts academic, behavir, and scialemtinal learning. Their visin is t develp a learning cmmunity where all learners reach their highest ptential, are prepared t meet the challenges and excel in a cmplex, intercnnected, changing wrld. Their missin states that Avis Huff CIPS and IMPACT Prgrams will wrk with families t prepare students fr the 21 st Century by engaging all learners in the meaningful, rigrus, apprpriate learning experiences that meet the highest educatinal and ethical standards in a caring and cllabrative envirnment. Principal s Reprt Dr. Levy explained that there is a shrt-term alternative placement (10 days r less) and a lng-term alternative placement (11 days r mre). Each placement ffers academic supprt, scial emtinal and behavir supprt and alternative placement in lieu f suspensin. The lng term placement can als be in lieu f expulsin. Dr. Levy reviewed the success f the prgrams. She stated that frm , 276 students were served and 162 students successfully returned t their hme schl. During the schl year, 85 students are presently being served thrugh the CIPS and IMPACT Prgrams with 29 students n track t return t their hme schls. Dr. Levy intrduced Mr. Jhnsn and Mrs. Rse frm the Kankakee Public Library t speak n Prject Next Generatin at Kankakee Public Library in Partnership with Avis Huff IMPACT/CIPS and Kankakee Schl District #111. Fur student participants, Givanni Davis, Angel Jacksn, Nathanael Lunn, and Myia Brwn, were als intrduced and spke abut the prgram. Dr. Levy cncluded her presentatin with the intrductin f the staff at Avis Huff.
