This prgram ffers yung men and wmen the pprtunity t see first-hand hw laws are made by participating in the legislative prcess. Each page is appinted by President Pr Tempre f the Senate, upn the recmmendatin f a Senatr, and serves fr ne week while the General Assembly is in sessin. Applicants must be at least 15 years f age r be in the ninth grade at the time f service and be in gd academic standing in schl. Senate Pages are imprtant t the peratin f the General Assembly as they assist the members and staff f the Senate during the legislative sessin. They participate in daily sessins, cmmittee meetings, and perfrm ther duties including, but nt limited t, delivering messages and materials within the legislative cmplex, answering phnes in senatrs ffices, and passing ut dcuments r running errands in the Senate Chamber during daily sessins. Senate Pages will be appinted t serve weeks beginning with May 21 and cntinuing until the last week f June. If yu have any questins r wish t learn mre abut the Nrth Carlina Senate Page Prgram, please cntact the Senate Page Crdinatr, Michael Perdue, at Last mnth, the Nrth Carlina three-judge panel presiding ver the case invlving the cnstitutinality f the legislative maps entered an rder which wuld require the maps authred by special master, Prfessr Nathaniel Persily, t be used fr this year s electins. The maps submitted by Persily made changes t Senate districts in Cumberland, Guilfrd, and Hke Cunty, and Huse districts in Bladen, Guilfrd, Mecklenburg, Sampsn, Wake, and Wayne Cunty. The remaining legislative districts drawn in August f 2017 remain as adpted. After the lwer curt s ruling, the Republican leadership appealed the decisin t the U. S. Supreme Curt, requesting that they blck all electin lines drawn by Persily. The U. S. Supreme Curt stated that sme f the 1 f 9 2/23/18, 8:30 PM

The Supreme Curt did nt elabrate n its decisin. This partial stay was granted t Republican legislative leaders. The high curt stated it wuld stay the lwer curt s rder t use Prfessr Perisly s districts in Wake and Mecklenburg. The curts believe the districts need further detailed discussin. I lk frward t hearing frm yu! Sessin News Huse Bill 90, entitled Changes t Educatin and Electin Laws, passed bth the Huse and Senate. The bill received sme resistance because it als included prvisins cncerning the Atlantic Cast Pipeline mitigatin fund and the Bipartisan State Bard f Electins and Ethics Enfrcement. I vted in supprt f this legislatin, because the delay in class-size requirements and additinal funding fr specialty teachers are steps in the right directin. Hwever, the measure shuld remain a standalne bill withut any ther cntrversial measures. This bill was presented t Gvernr Ry Cper n February 13. 3 Huse Bill 189, entitled the Water Safety Act, passed the Senate largely alng party lines and was sent t the Huse. Senatr Waddell did nt vte in supprt f this bill.
