CLAIR SHORES CULTURAL COMMITTEE DIA PRESENTations Don t miss the DIA Director s Cut presentation on Thursday, November 3 at 7:00 PM at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and Hall. Salvador Salort-Pons, the new director of the Detroit Institute of Arts, will be presenting some of his favorite works of art, answering your questions, and talking about his vision for the museum. Free vouchers are available at the library. Be sure to catch the next Behind the Seen talk at the library on Monday, November 28 at 7:00 PM. The topic will be Bitter/Sweet: Coffee, Tea and Chocolate. The influence of these beverages on European art will be explored, drawing heavily from the DIA s world-class encyclopedic collection. Gilstorf Meeting Room at the St. Clair Shores Public Library. LIBRARY CARD SIGN UP WINNERS September was Library Card Sign Up Month and 188 new library cards were issued. Each new cardholder was eligible to win from a bevy of gift cards. The winners are: Adam Berger, Autumn Berger, Shannon Brockert, Gregory Garner, Savannah Gojcaj, Dawn Jones, Cynthia Lucido, Allison Porter, Heather Russell, and Heidi Walkowiak. Congratulations winners and welcome to the St. Clair Shores Public Library! Getting a library card is easy! St. Clair Shores residents may obtain a library card by filling out an application. Adults age 18 and older will need to show their current driver license or state ID. Minors age 5-17 will need their parent to be present with their current driver license or state ID. VENDING MACHINES NOW AVAILABLE Vending machines with snacks and beverages are now up and running in the library's Reading Lounge. The machines will take cash, credit/debit cards and make change for one or five dollar bills. Please check them out on your next visit to the library. Adult Coloring Program The St. Clair Shores Public Library will be hosting two free adult coloring programs on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 and Wednesday December 14, 2016 from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM. This drop in program will take place in the William R. Gilstorf Meeting Room at the St. Clair Shores Public Library. All materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own supplies. Please contact the library at for details and information on the program or check the library s website at: CRAZY 8s CLUB The Youth Services Department is excited to offer the Crazy 8s Math Club starting in January. Crazy 8s is an eight week long program designed to provide hands-on activities that teach different math concepts in fun and exciting ways. The club will meet every Wednesday from 6:30 PM until 7:30 PM starting, January 4, Registration is required and starts December 14. Each session is limited to 16 children and attendance is crucial as the skills learned one week will be built upon later. This eight-week session will be for children in grades K through 2. Register your children to have fun exploring sound, time, building, games, and spy training! Youth YOGA PROGRAM Join Miss Michelle from CCPlus Fitness for "Green Eggs and Ham" Yoga. Participants will enjoy hearing the Dr. Seuss story while bringing the story to life through kid friendly yoga poses. Just like Sam, try something new and see how much fun you can have with movement and reading. Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes and bring a yoga mat or towel, and a bottle of water. This program will take place on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 6:30 PM.

3 YOUTH SERVICES WINTER STORYTIME Toddler, Preschool, and Family Storytimes return Tuesday, January 17, Registration is required for Toddler Storytime only and will begin Tuesday, January 3, There is no registration required for Preschool or Family Storytime. The times and recommended ages are as follows: FOR TOTS 1 st Stop and Tot Time continue each Wednesday and Thursday morning at 10:00 AM. Your wee ones will enjoy the songs, nursery rhymes, stories and bubbles of 1 st Stop before we bring out the toys at 10:30 for Tot Time. These free programs are for children from birth through age four. There will be no 1 st Stop or Tot Time on November 16, 17, and 24. EXOTIC ZOO Toddler Storytime Tuesdays at 10:00 AM (For ages months with adult) Preschool Storytime Tuesdays at 1:30 PM (For independent listeners ages 3 to 5 years) Family Storytime Tuesdays at 7:00 PM (For children of all ages and their families) PAWS FOR READING Paws for Reading continues on Saturday afternoons from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Read to one of our wonderful dogs for 15 minutes on a first-come, first-served basis. Paws for Reading is a nationally recognized program whose goal is to help reluctant and struggling readers discover the joy of reading with the help of a friendly canine. Wild animals are coming to the library! The experts from Exotic Zoo are bringing a Siberian lynx, kangaroo, exotic birds, and more for their Exotic Animal Show on Monday, December 5 at 7:00 PM. This fun and educational program is free and appropriate for children of all ages, but space is limited. Registration is required and begins Monday, November 21. CAST YOUR VOTE! Election talk is everywhere and we d like to let kids have a vote. Children can vote for their favorite book character from the following four choices: Pete the Cat; Pigeon; Elephant & Piggie (running as one, since they are always together); and Olivia. Each child has the chance to vote one time between October 25 and November 8. The winner will be unveiled on Wednesday, November 8 in the Youth Services Room. The ballots will be located at the Youth Services Desk. LEGO BLOCK PARTY Get creative at the LEGO Block Party! We provide a variety of LEGO blocks so you can let your imagination soar. We can even display your completed projects in the Youth Services room for all to enjoy. The next Block Party will be held on Saturday, November 26 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There is no registration for this program. HARRY POTTER PARTY Join us on Saturday, November 12 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM for a Harry Potter Party to celebrate the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. There will be stations set up throughout the Youth Services Room where children and teens can choose their house, make potions, have a wizard snack, and play Quidditch! There is no registration for this event and costumes are encouraged. HOLIDAY CRAFT Come to the library on Saturday, December 10 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and make a holiday craft. Directions and materials will be provided. Children of all ages are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult to assist them with cutting and gluing. These crafts will be an adorable addition to your holiday decorations! Children can also participate in a Candy Cane Hunt in the Youth Services Room. TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (T.A.B.) Are you a teen in grade six or up who is interested in providing some input to the library? Then drop by the Teen Advisory Board (T.A.B.) meetings to help plan teen programs and discuss some favorite books. The next meetings are Saturdays, November 19 and December 17 at 2:00 PM. Join other teens for some friendly discussion as well as food and beverages!

4 FRIENDS FRIENDS MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Merry Johnson, chairman of Friends Membership Committee, has stepped down, and Peggy Chamberlain has accepted the Board s nomination as new chairman. Thank you, Merry, for your service! Welcome, Peggy! The membership committee needs volunteers for this important work, so if you re interested and willing to volunteer a few hours each month, please call the library and leave a message for Peggy. It isn t too early to be thinking about holiday gifts, or something special for yourself. FRIENDS BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP Join us on the second Wednesday of each month at the St. Clair Shores Public Library at 1:00 PM in the Gilstorf Meeting Room for the following book discussions. CLAIRE FINE ARTS SALE The weather certainly didn t cooperate on Saturday of the Fine Arts Sale, but Sunday s beautiful, sunny weather brought out the crowds, and the Friends were the happy recipients of their generosity. Thanks to everyone who made this a successful sale! However, if you missed these gorgeous books, a selection will be available for purchase during the Fall Semi-Annual Book Sale. FRIENDS ACCESSORY SALE Everyone loves a bargain, and plenty were to be found at the Friends Accessory sale in October! Lots of shoppers took home new-to-them handbags, scarves, jewelry, and other items. Many thanks to those who donated, those who volunteered, and especially those who purchased! FALL SEMI-ANNUAL BOOK SALE It s time to stock up for your cold-weather reading! The Fall Semi-Annual Book Sale will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2016 through Saturday, November 19. Claire Fine Art Sale, we will have a section devoted to premium coffee-table and art books, which make wonderful gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Come in and fill up your Friends Tote Bag (also available for purchase - $3)!!! HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS The Friends will again offer a tasty selection of home-baked goodies during Holiday Happenings at the library on Saturday, December 10, 10:00 AM 4:00 PM. We will happily accept your specialrecipe baked goods to sell; there will be a sign-up sheet at the circulation desk. We ll also offer holiday books and CDs for gifts, or for your own enjoyment. All meetings are held in the Arthur M. Woodford Local History Center unless otherwise noted in the newsletter and on the library web site. All programs are free and open to the public. Beginning genealogists are always welcome. Please visit the library website for information on upcoming meetings. CONGRATULATIONS Quilt Raffle WINNERS! The names of two lucky winners were drawn for The Historical Society of St. Clair Shores sponsored raffle, at the 2016 Lac Ste. Claire Fine Art Fair in September. First prize winner, Angie Ventimiglia, won a beautiful queen-size quilt made by Sue Horan. The second prize, a framed reproduction photograph of the Shores Inn c1940, went to Connie Lacey. Congratulations winners and our thanks to all for participating. The proceeds of the raffle will benefit projects of the Historical Society of St. Clair Shores. Museum Hours and Events The museum is available for free special tours and for low-cost rental for small groups. When you visit you will learn about daily life in rural St. Clair Shores in the late 19th century and the early 20th century; how a farmhouse would have been furnished, the daily chores, popular pastimes, and more. You will also learn why the farmhouse is architecturally significant. The museum will be open Wednesdays November 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 & December 7, 14, 21 & 28 as well as Saturdays November 5, 12 & 19 & December 3, 10 & 17 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The plaque has a black background with silver lettering identifying the building as a St. Clair Shores Historical Site with the year of construction. For structures over 100 years old, the plaque will have gold lettering. The cost of the marker is $125 payable to the Historical Society of St. Clair Shores. Receiving a historical marker plaque will not affect the owner s ability to update the property or structure. Details for the required proof documents and application are listed in a packet available at the St. Clair Shores Public Library, the Selinsky-Green Farmhouse Museum, and on the Library website under the Historical Commission webpage. If you need assistance in beginning research on your property visit the Local History Center at the Library. Hours of operation are listed in the pamphlet and on the Library website.
