2 APPLICATION PACKET Congratulations on being nominated as a possible candidate for UMKC Court Warming 2018 Roo Royalty Court! Court Warming is a valued UMKC tradition surrounding UMKC Athletics and our students and is scheduled for the week of February 3 rd -11 th, Being nominated for Roo Royalty Court is a great honor. The Roo Royalty winners will represent UMKC as prominent members of the student body, are advocates for UMKC students, and will assist with the planning of Court Warming Membership and participation in the events are open to all currently enrolled students regardless of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, or veteran s status. Candidate Qualifications: Candidate must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 An organization or student group may only nominate one candidate. A candidate may only represent one organization or student group. *If an organization or student group elects to sponsor Court Warming in addition to a nomination, the sponsorship will not impact scoring in any way* Important Dates: November 17 th, 2017 o Deadline Roo Royalty Court Candidate Nominations and Applications at 5 p.m. November 28 th December 1 st, 2017 (Subject to change) o Candidate Interviews December 4 th, 2017 o Selected Roo Royalty Court Candidates are notified December 8 th, 2017 o Mandatory Roo Royalty Court Orientation The deadline is quickly approaching, so if you are interested in being considered as a Roo Royalty candidate, please read and complete the attached application and return to the Office of Student Involvement, Student Union 320 by November 17 th at 5 p.m.. 3 Candidate Application Checklist: Have You: Read and understood the Roo Royalty Court duties and responsibilities. Read and understood the Roo Royalty Court campaigning guidelines Reviewed the dates and times of all Court Warming events and understand the Roo Royalty Court Warming point system. Completed the Roo Royalty Candidate Application, including: o Application Form o Resume Once you have completed all of the steps, please return your typed application packet to: Court Warming Committee Office of Student Involvement Student Union 320 Or Electronically at upb@umkc.edu All application materials must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17 th,
4 Roo Royalty Court Duties and Responsibilities Specific Duties: Participate in Court Warming Events Serve as a member of the Court Warming Committee in 2019 (if possible) Participate/Host Court Warming 2019 activities Additional Responsibilities: Notify the Office of Student Involvement (OSI) if you are unable to attend specific events. Act in a professional manner when representing UMKC. Be on time to meetings and/or events for Court Warming Other Awards Roo Royalty Court Most Congeniality Award The members of the Roo Royalty Court will vote on this award. This award is presented to the Roo Royalty Candidate who demonstrated respect, admiration, charisma, and inspiration to their peers throughout the Court Warming campaign process. 3
5 Candidate Campaign Guidelines The Office of Student Involvement (OSI) must approve all campaign materials before distribution. Candidates are required to come to the Office of Student Involvement (OSI) to have their materials stamped by the Court Warming Committee by January 29 th at 5:00 p.m. Campaign materials are limited to the following: 100 Flyers (Maximum size: 11 x 17 ) o Each candidate will be assigned one Court Warming event to promote on all flyers 50 Buttons o Button materials are provided for FREE in the OSI Resource Room 1 Facebook Group 1 Electronic Flyer T-Shirts o May be ordered, but CANNOT BE REQUIRED for members of your organization. Campaign Materials o Deadline for approval: Friday, January 19 th at 5:00 p.m. o Get campaign materials approved by a member of the Court Warming Committee o JPEG file of electronic advertisement to upb@umkc.edu Note: The student organization that sponsors you is solely responsible for all materials purchased for your campaign. 4
6 Rules and Regulations Individual campaigns are required. Do not pair up with another candidate to campaign. Pairing up may cause some students to feel obligated to vote for a pair rather than for an individual. No person may remove or post over other candidate materials. This may result in an infraction on the candidate (even if it was not the candidate, but an individual or group representing the candidate). Promotional spending cap will be $250 for all Roo Royalty Court candidates. Proof of purchases or donations (in a receipt or hard copy documentation) must be provided to the Court Warming Committee. Documentation must be provided to the Court Warming Committee by Friday, February 9 th by 5:00 p.m. Sponsorship does not effect scoring. Student Organizations who are co-sponsoring Court Warming are welcome to nominate a candidate; however, sponsorship does not influence scoring in any way. Candidates may begin campaigning on Monday, January 29 th. This includes any campaign materials posted on social media websites. Voting can only be done by UMKC Students. Any candidate that attempts to promote online voting or event voting to individuals outside of UMKC will lose their voting points. Campaigning in the Atterbury Student Success Center Please keep all posters and flyers along the Main Street area, which is located between the end of the old Bookstore Display Case and the start of the windows on the first floor of the ASSC. This will enable marketing to the student population visiting the UMKC Dining Hall. We would also request that painter s tape or sticky tak be used to display on the wall in order to minimize paint damage. Please note that there is to be absolutely NO advertising materials placed in the following areas: Exterior doors or windows Bathrooms (neither inside the bathroom or on the exterior doors) Vending machines Windows in the 1 st floor lounge 5
7 Campaigning in the Student Union You will be able to run your electronic campaign materials on the digital display monitors throughout the Student Union. the JPEG file to for distribution through the digital signage system. Campaign materials will be placed into rotation as they are received. Only one electronic advertisement is permitted per candidate. Electronic advertisements should include your picture, involvement activities, accomplishments, thoughts on school spirit, and why you should be UMKC Roo Royalty. Campaigning in the Residence Halls/Swinney Recreation Center These buildings have specific guidelines for publicity items. Campaign materials must be approved by Residential Life to be posted in Residential Life Facilities. Any unapproved items will be removed. The Director of Residential Life must approve postcards or items that you may want to have available at the front desk. Please work with the appropriate Residential Life Coordinators to obtain permission for these items. There will be NO HANGING of items on the fences near Swinney and the soccer field. Campaigning with Sidewalk Chalk You may campaign with Sidewalk Chalk on campus. Do not write in any areas that cannot be washed away with the rain. Other Promotional items or banners in other buildings or outdoors are hang at your risk. Campus Facilities will be notified that Court Warming campaigning has begun, but Campus Facilities and the Court Warming Committee will not be responsible for any lost or missing campaign materials. Please inquire in the administrative offices of each building as to whether they have specific requirements for any publicity items in their buildings. Materials posted outside of the approved areas will be removed. Candidates must remove all materials by Sunday, February 11 th at 5:00 p.m. 6
8 Voting Procedures All voting will take place online through an electronic ballot system. Online voting will begin on Monday, February 5 th at 8:00 a.m. and will close on Friday, February 9 th at 8:00 p.m. For more information about candidate scoring, please refer to the Court Warming Scoring Guidelines provided in this packet. REMINDER: All rules and regulations must be followed. Failure to do so may result in disqualification of the candidate. The first violation will result in a warning, the second violation will deduct points from your overall score, and the third violation will result in an automatic removal of candidacy. Any decision made is at the discretion of the Court Warming Committee. Any actions taken on behalf of your candidacy or while representing you as a candidate will count as a violation against your campaign. Candidates are responsible for informing friends, members of organizations, supporters, and classmates of the candidate guidelines. Check your regularly prior to Court Warming and during the week of Court Warming. We will do our best to inform you of changes, developments, and announcements as soon as possible. 9 Mandatory Events for Roo Royalty Candidates Attendance of events is mandatory except in extreme circumstances. Candidates receive points for attending each event. If any event if officially cancelled due to inclement weather, it will not be rescheduled at a later date. Court Warming Tabling & Food Drive Monday, January 29 th Friday, February 9 th 11 a.m. 1 p.m. Located in the Student Union and Atterbury Student Success Center Roo Royalty Candidates will table for a minimum of two hours to promote voting, collect nonperishable food items and inform students of upcoming Court Warming events. Roo Royalty Court Introduction Saturday, February 3 rd 7:05 p.m., Swinney Recreation Center Roo Royalty Candidates will be introduced prior to half-time of the UMKC Women s Basketball game. Candidates will compete in a friendly completion during half-time of the game. Costume Contest (Throughout the week) Monday, February 5 th Friday, February 9 th 11 a.m. 1 p.m. Students can come to the Office of Student Involvement during the week of Court Warming dressed as their favorite safari animal to enter for a prize. The winner of the prize will be picked at the end of the week. Banner Painting Contest Monday, February 5 th Friday, February 9 th Candidate banners must be turned in by Friday, February 2 nd at Noon Located in the UMKC Student Union, 3 rd Floor Railing Candidates are asked to turn in the banner to the Office of Student Involvement BINGO Night Monday, February 5 th 6:00 p.m., Student Union Theatre Play bingo against your fellow UMKC students. Chris Jones (Hypnotist) Tuesday, February 6 th 7:00 p.m., Student Union Theatre UPB Cinema Wednesday, February 7 th 5:30 p.m. & 8:00 p.m., Student Union Theatre 8
10 Yell Like Hell Thursday, February 8 th 7:00 p.m., Student Union Theatre Candidates will put together skits related to the theme/umkc Spirit as well as their own talents. Judging will be based on talent, UMKC Spirit, incorporation of the Court Warming theme, and creativity. Swinney BLOWOUT Friday, February 9 th 5:00 p.m. Swinney Recreation Center Come socialize with the student body and enjoy carnival games. Each candidate will run a carnival game or activity. Court Warming Coronation Game Saturday, February 10 th 5:05 p.m. Municipal Auditorium The 2018 Roo Royalty will be crowned during the UMKC Men s Basketball game! Candidates are required to arrive no later than 4:15 p.m. to review the coronation process. Please dress semi-formally. You will be free to enjoy most of the game and we will inform you of when and where to meet during the game. Changes or additions can be made to this schedule by the Court Warming Committee at any time and event details may be modified as needed. 9
11 UMKC Court Warming Scoring Guidelines Application and Interview (100 Possible Points) Candidates will be evaluated in a variety of areas, included but not limited to: leadership, campus involvement, community service, academics, school spirit, and future aspirations. Candidate s GPA, resume and essay will be awarded a point value as part of their total interview score.
