1 PCMS ASB Elections The following election information pertains to the four ASB officer positions. The election of senators and representatives will be held next fall, and information on those elections will be available once the new school year begins. Important Note: The President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer will automatically be enrolled in the leadership class. If someone not currently enrolled in that class is elected to one of these positions, a schedule change will be necessary in order to accommodate this requirement. ASB Officers President This position must be filled by an 8 th grade student. Vice-President 8 th and 7 th graders are eligible. Secretary 8 th and 7 th graders are eligible. Treasurer 8 th and 7 th graders are eligible. Candidate Requirements All candidates must: Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or better during the trimester prior to the election. Have no suspensions or expulsions during the previous year. Turn in a completed application and a typed copy of a campaign speech by Monday, May 11 to Mr. Zabriskie. Have their approved speech recorded for broadcast prior to election day. Recording days will be 5/18, 5/19, and 5/20/15; see Mr. Zabriskie to sign up. Once elected, all officers must: Maintain acceptable citizenship standards. Model exemplary behavior, as outlined in the student handbook. Adhere to the Issaquah School District drug and alcohol policy. Purchase an ASB card. Be available for some planning outside of school hours.
2 Application Process All interested candidates should pick up an application form from Mr. Zabriskie or from the office. Campaign speeches must be 1-2 minutes in length, and all content must be appropriate for school. A typed copy must be submitted for approval to Mr. Zabriskie along with the application by 2:30 on Monday, May 11. Once your speech has been approved, you will sign up for a time before or after school for recording your speech. Ms. Gehle in room 2001 will be in charge of the recording. If you are dissatisfied with your first attempt, you will be allowed to record your speech a second time. Elections Elections will be held on Friday, May 29 in Lynx Life. Prerecorded candidate speeches will be broadcast during all Lynx Life classes, and all current 6 th and 7 th graders will vote by secret ballot. The results will be announced at the end of the day. Dates to Remember Monday, May 11 Tuesday, May 12 Tuesday, May 12 May 18, 19, 20 Thursday, May 28 Friday, May 29 Applications and speeches are due by 2:30. Turn them in to Mr. Zabriskie or to the office. Students will be notified that their applications and speeches have been approved, and then sign up in Mr. Zabriskie s room for when to record the speeches. Campaigning will begin. Please see Campaign Guidelines for details. All posters must be stamped by Mr. Zabriskie for approval. Speeches will be recorded after school 5/18 and 5/19, and before school 5/20. See Ms. Gehle to sign up for a specific date and time. Candidate speeches will be broadcast during Lynx Life. Elections will be held during Lynx Life.
3 Responsibilities of Officers The President shall: Preside at ASB meetings. Call any special meetings as deemed necessary. Serve in a public speaking role at ASB assemblies and activities. Serve in an advisory capacity on all ASB committees. At the end of the school year, compile a list of suggestions for an improved ASB program, which will then be given to the newly elected President. The Vice-President shall: Attend all ASB meetings. Upon request of the President, preside at any meeting. Serve in a public speaking role at ASB assemblies and activities. Serve in an advisory capacity on all ASB committees. The Secretary shall: Attend all ASB meetings Prepare and keep all records of ASB meetings. Supply a record of the ASB minutes to the ASB advisor. Attend to all correspondence. The Treasurer shall: Attend all ASB meetings. Communicate with the PCMS bookkeeper regarding ASB funds. With the approval of the ASB, attend to the payment of all ASB debts. Sign all official monetary documents.
4 Campaign Guidelines Campaigning will begin on the morning of Tuesday, May 12. Any campaigning prior to this date may jeopardize the candidate s eligibility. All candidates may begin hanging posters before school on May 12 th and may continue to do so through election day (5/29). The following guidelines must be followed by all candidates: 1. The maximum size for campaign posters is 3 x 3. Any larger posters will be removed. 2. Candidates must limit themselves to a maximum of five campaign posters. 3. All posters and campaign materials must be approved by the ASB advisor. Once your posters are completed, see Mr. Zabriskie for approval. 4. Posters may be stapled to the green wallpaper in the halls throughout the building or taped to the white painted walls. If taping posters to the walls, blue masking tape must be used. Mr. Zabriskie has extra rolls of tape that may be used but then returned after use. Posters may not be taped to any of the windows or hung in the gym. 5. Do not hang posters directly next to a teacher s door, as that space should be reserved for the teacher s use. 6. All campaigning must be positive in nature. No put downs or criticism of opponents will be allowed. Candidates should stress their own positive attributes. 7. No pins, buttons, stickers or flyers may be distributed. 8. No food items may be used during campaigning. 9. All campaigning must occur outside of the classroom. No disruptions will be allowed while classes are in session. 10. The candidates are responsible for removing all posters once the election is over. Butcher paper and tag board will be available through the ASB. Anyone needing materials before then should contact Mr. Zabriskie. Good Luck! Let the Campaign Begin!
