Wartburg College Student Senate WARTBURG STUDENT SENATE February 25, :30 am WBC 214 Buckmaster Guest speaker: Dr. Margaret Empie, Dining Services Dr. Empie: I want to tell you a few things that have gone on in this year with the survey and answer some questions after. As you may have read in the Trumpet, we don t have very many student employees. That is not because people don t want to work there. When there s not enough people on campus, we don t have enough workers. A quarter of every new class that comes in works in food services. As students become more senior, we have less and less to work with. The pay increases for students in dining services and maintenance at $7.50. For every 200 hours they work, they get a dime raise. You only have four years to work in college, you want to get those pay increases. We re taking that work and spreading the money out. People who work more make more money. After 1400 work hours, there are no more pay increases. That pay will come out of student s next pay increases. We might as well use those resources like the temporary staff from the Larrabee Center. The survey we conducted this past fall in November and we had lots of participation. We got the results back recently. I was pleased with the ratings overall and the categories went up from last year. In the survey, we know what things we have to work on because they are rated very important and based on satisfaction. One of the categories was for the variety of food. What does that mean to you? Another one was for the value of the board plan, taste of food and quality of food. I thought the ratings were good. This year we went from Webfood to GET. We didn t have a choice, so we had to find something. It was either GET or nothing. We switched over in December to GET because we wanted to find out problems before Christmas so we could work on them over break. Behind the scenes, we ve been working on them constantly. Meal transfers are the same, just how it works is different. We ll be looking at menu changes over this break. Those will take place in May. For the question about variety of food, what does that mean to you all? Senator Crepin: I think I ve heard most from constituents that they want vegan options. Yes, we have French fries and pizza every day but we don t get a lot of healthier options. Some of the foods on the hot lines are not very nutritional. Dr. Empie: What do you constitute as healthy? This is a problem for us because everybody s view might be different. President Lancaster: I think you mentioned last year that dining services was going to post the nutritional information online.

Dr. Empie: Would having the nutritional information posted something you d like to see? It would be at least three years before we could do anything if we enter all those recipes online. One problem with this is the nutritional information won t be right if the yield isn t right. There is a plan to do that. We don t have enough of those recipes yet for it to not be frustrating. We don t want to post on card because you have to maintain that. We want to do it best way we can. Treasurer Capper: Do you have a timeline of when that might be complete? Dr. Empie: I could lie and say next year, but it s not. I would say two years out. I have been thinking about what we can do for an app. Instead of doing our own, we could use other people s services. There s enough technology that maybe we won t have it on our website but somewhere else so you can use it in conjunction with other things. Senator Jacobs: You said the calories depend on the yield. For K-dit meals or things in Zesty Orange with things individually packaged, could you put the nutritional information on that? Dr. Empie: It does show the ingredients. As soon as we get the nutritional information, we could print those on the labels. The real reason I want to do the net nutritional piece is to address ingredients in the foods. Senator Wells: Other colleges have gluten-free stations. Is that something Wartburg could do? Dr. Empie: We could do that. Here s why we don t. People who are gluten-free and or have celiac disease typically eat the same foods. Sometimes the tongs at those stations have a cross-contamination issue. It s not always true that it could be perfectly safe. We can accommodate gluten-free. Treasurer Capper: Some nights there s two things I want to eat, why is that? Dr. Empie: We put two really popular things against each other on purpose because we want to spread people around in food service. It s an intentional thing. We start playing with that when we make the menu. Recorder Thompson: Could we have grilled chicken every day? Dr. Empie: No, because it s not variety. Senator Newell: I think it would be better if the salad bar was updated more with more protein options like beans for vegetarians. Senator Jacobs: Could we expand the salad bar? Dr. Empie: Expand it more than the already 45 options? We can look into it. Senator Alene: What happened to the fat-free ranch? Marty Johnson: We ve stopped that earlier in the year because we haven t really had many requests for it. We do have packets so you can ask for those. If there s a popular demand, we may look at bringing it back. Dr. Empie: Just to note that fat-free dressing does have more sugar. Treasurer-Elect Jobes-Ryan: I go to breakfast every day and I noticed that the yogurt, fruit and granola is not offered every day.

Dr. Empie: We only offer that twice a week so we don t always hit the Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday/Friday crowd. It s a variety thing. We could look into it. Senator Newell: Maybe you could partner with sustainability regarding the vegetarian options as it is more sustainable to be vegetarian. Dr. Empie: We don t have to partner with sustainability, we can do more nonmeat items. Senator Wright: Often when I go in the Mensa there s no vegetarian option left so I have to eat cereal or salad. Dr. Empie: Please let us know that because we do tally what s left so we can either make more or less for next time. That helps us. Senator Pollack: My constituents were wondering if there will ever be meal transfers at the Zesty. Dr. Empie: All food starts here at the student center. The Zesty isn t designed to handle meal transfers. Our plan is not to do meal transfers there, but that doesn t mean they couldn t happen in the future. We need to figure out how to do those things at Konditorei more efficiently. Senator Crepin: Could there every be meal transfers on the weekend? Dr. Empie: If we do that, we d have to make more students work on the weekend. The challenge is we don t have enough students working already. We ve picked around times like late Sunday nights, but meal transfers are meant for students who are too busy. Senator Jaeschke: On GET, meal transfers wouldn t show times available. Shelly Geweke: It doesn t show times because it doesn t block out full times. We re still working on that. Dr. Empie: GET was meant for pizzas. Wartburg s raised some problems with GET and it s caused them to fix them. Senator Baker: Is it possible we could get more meal transfers in certain times? Dr. Empie: We have a certain number every 15 minutes. If we do more we have to have more people working. We could look at certain times of the day. Even if we increase it a little, they wouldn t realize it they d just fill it. The process is lurking so send questions and people to the office at the back of the Info Desk. The problems people are having, they re not following directions. Shelly Geweke: With GET, you will get an confirmation if your order goes through. 2. Devotion: Senator Alene Video: What is privilege? Senator Alene: We all have privilege to a certain extent. We re all one, we re all human beings. 1 John 4:11 Use your privilege to love one another. Devotion for next week: Senator Jacobs 3. Approval of Last Week s Minutes: 2/18/16

President Lancaster: Last week s minutes, like this week s minutes didn t have the appropriate date. It had 2/4/16 when it should have had 2/11/16. Recorder Thompson: I ll change that and upload it online to the website. Vice President Zmudka: My bad. If there are no more concerns we will vote on the approval of last week s minutes. Last week s minutes stand approved. 4. New Business a. Resolution #52- Supplemental Request, Drumline Vice President Zmudka: If there are no questions, this will move on to BRC. b. Resolutuion #53- Supplemental Request, Reel Orange Vice President Zmudka: If there are no questions, this will move on to BRC. c. Resolution #54- Senate Leadership Scholarship Motion to suspend the rules: President Lancaster Second: Senator Crepin Recorder Thompson: This resolution is for the Student Senate Leadership Scholarship. The Leadership Education and Service Committee met to look over this year s nine applications. The LESC then gave to nominations to the executive team who looked it over and approved to pass on to full Senate for a vote. Those two applicants were Abigail Schaper and Cassandra Smith. Their applications stood out from the rest. The LESC and executive team thought they were deserving of the two $500 scholarships. *They introduce themselves* Vice President Zmukda: If there are no more questions, we will move this on to a vote. Resolution #54 passes. Rules reinstated. 5. Old Business a. Resolution #37- Clinton/Founders HIP Motion to consider: Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner Second: Senator Guertler Administrative Laudner: This resolution was amended from $ to $ due to the change in stoves from gas to electric, a more reasonable cookware set, and the purchase of a marker board table instead of the white board paint and table purchase. There will be another amendment because they found cookware in office, a microwave will most likely replace that. Instead of a table and white board paint, we re purchasing white board table for Founders lounge. This is for resolution is for both Clinton and Founders

Parliamentarian Schulz: We will be motioning to table these resolutions for next meeting. We will be doing this to all of them as we made changes in the cabinet meeting. Motion to table: Parliamentarian Schulz Second: Senator Pollack Resolution #37 is tabled. b. Resolutuion #38- Complex HIP Motion to consider: Recorder-Elect Henderson Second: Senator Anderson Recorder-Elect Henderson: The Complex hall council has been asking constituents and sending out a Survey Monkey for their input. We re amending the resolution to $1, as we ve decided to buy a ping pong table and equipment for that, as well as a smart blue ray DVD player, locking equipment for that and white boards for the lounges in Hebron and Vollmer. Administrative Laudner: Are you going forth with the TV? Recorder-Elect Henderson: Oh yes, and a TV for centennial kitchen. Senator Matthew: You could look into the video game intramural league for locking equipment. Motion to table: Parliamentarian Schulz Second: Senator Wells Resolution #38 is tabled. c. Resolution #43- KVMO HIP Motion to consider: Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner Second: Senator French Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: Travone is not here so I ll speak on behalf of him for KVMO hall council. There s been a few things taken out because we re no longer doing recycling bins or the card reader. The card reader was $3400 alone. We ll be getting two outdoor grills to go behind the Manors. We re also getting a picnic table to go back there. Maintenance has agreed to help us get flowers so we re allotting $150 for flowers. Amended to: $1,410 due to the purchase of two outdoor grills for behind the manors, $150 allotted for flowers in the Afton Manors, and a picnic table for behind the manors as well. Senator Wells: Will the flowers be renewed every year? Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: No, this is just for this year. Senator Matthew: Why were the recycling bins taken out? Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: It has something to do with maintenance and their upkeep with that. Senator Dolphin: Why are we buying two grills? President Lancaster: We ve had a discussion on why we re doing that. One is to replace one that s broken and then add the additional one. So there will be a net gain of one.

Senator Baker: Are there not grills outside the manors? President Lancaster: There are two already. We re buying one to replace the broken one and then one additional one. The picnic table is more expensive because we re going with same one we purchased for the campus lawn. It s made out of 100% recyclable material. Recorder-Elect Henderson: Is there a cost with the installation of the grills? Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: No cost was mentioned. Senator Singleton: If the card reader isn t possible, is there another way we could get in contact with the lounge? Administrative Ombudsperson Launder: I can talk to Cassie Hales. Motion to table: Parliamentarian Schulz Second: Treasurer-Elect Jobes-Ryan d. Resolution #44- GLR HIP Motion to consider: Senator Odei Second: Senator Jacobs Senator Odei: Amended to: $1, due to a change in price for the white boards for 6 study rooms in Grossman Hall. GLR is also looking to purchase cooking and baking utensils and the treadmill is an iffy subject. I talked to Eric Knoblock to see if we could fix it. That could be amended or changed. There s a couple more tables and chairs for people to study in Cardinal Commons. We re also getting a washer and dryer for te basement of the Res. Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: The cost difference is due to getting smaller marker boards. It s a lot cheaper. Vice President-Elect Creed: I talked to Eric and got some numbers to see whether fixing or buying new would be more cost efficient. A new treadmill would cost about $1000. Motion to table: Parliamentarian Schulz Second: Senator Primous e. Resolutuion #50- Supplemental Request, I-Club Motion to consider: Treasurer Capper Second: Senator Singleton Treasurer Capper: I will yield the floor to Senator Astarita. Senator Astaria: This year the International Club is having a culture show on March 19. One of our biggest expenses is reserving Neumann Auditorium for dress rehearsal and the show. Treasurer Capper: Amended to $700: For this academic year, I-Club was given a lower amount of funding through allocations due to no culture show performance in This year, the Culture show is currently planned to happen. With this, the BRC felt as this amount was adequate to barely help I- Club break even after putting this event on. The I-Club has approximately 80 members and around 200 people attend culture show. The BRC factored in their

current account balance, and remaining allocation in determining the $700 dollars. Parliamentarian Schulz: With the allocation process for big events, what s distinguished for fundraising? Treasurer Capper: They don t make money from this event. It s more for raising awareness. It s not fundraising. We can t fund anything that s a fundraising event. Senator Matthew: So $700 is just filling hole they weren t allocated? Treasurer Capper: In theory, yes. I didn t look to see what they were allocated before, but I m guessing it s even less than what made up their allocation before. Vice President Zmudka: If there are no more questions, we will move this on to a vote. Abstained: Senator Astarita Resolution #50 passes. f. Resolution #51- Supplemental Request, Orange EXCELeration Motion to consider: Treasurer Capper Second: Senator Odei Treasurer Capper: I will yield the floor to JuliAnna Olague. JuliAnna Olague: There will be four of us going to the NOTA Region conference at the University of Iowa. All four of us going are second-years. This conference will help orientation staff leaders with leadership and diversity. Treasurer Capper: Amended $800: All of the line items above fell under the guidelines in the BRM. The maximum amount Student Senate can award to any conference is $200/person or $800 dollars total. The BRC felt as this was an adequate amount for the benefits of this conference. Vice President Zmudka: If there are no more questions, we will move this on to a vote. Abstained: Recorder Thompson, Senator Haage, Senator Arp, Senator Wright Resolution #51 passes. g. Resolution #52- Supplemental, KWAR Motion to consider: Treasurer Capper Second: Treasurer-Elect Jobes-Ryan Treasurer Capper: I will yield the floor to Senator Singleton. Senator Singleton: For many years, the KWAR staff has attended the ICMA in Des Moines. Six of us attended and we took away 14 awards. We are asking for reimbursement. Treasurer Capper: Amended to $205: This conference benefited several students that are involved in KWAR. Since this request falls below the 200 dollars per student per conference, the 80% rule was applied and this amount was agreed upon by the BRC. President Lancaster: If you go every year, why wasn t this in your allocations?

Senator Singleton: They went through the allocation process before I joined. I suggested they apply for supplemental funding and add to allocation for next year. Vice President Zmudka: If there are no more questions, we will move this on to a vote. Abstained: Senator French, Senator Singleton Resolution #52 passes. 6. Student Issues Senator Baker: There s no vacuum players in the Manors. Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: You can talk to your RA first to see who your maintenance person is. Then I would say to contact maintenance. Senator Wright: It might be over in the adjacent pod. I know two share one vacuum. Senator Baker: I checked all four. Vice President-Elect Creed: A couple weeks ago I saw vacuum cleaner in the snow. That might not be it. Vice President: If these our your friends doing these things, please tell them to stop. 7. Dr. Kittle/Dr. Pothast Dr. Pothast: I have registration forms for the Pi Run. Fred Ribich: In recent years, I ve been working in administration with institutional research. We re resurrecting the academic adviser feedback form. Advising is a very important component of your Wartburg experience. We use this to gather feedback from students. After break, in mid-march all second and third year students will be getting a feedback form. This will tap into the best practices of advising. Some students have more than one adviser. We do this for a number of reasons: to give feedback back to faculty advisers and to see how things are going. The college needs to monitor and evaluate how advising is going at Wartburg. Please check your for this. We re also conducting the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). We have used it since early 2000s. We use this instrument every three years. It goes to all first year students and all fourth year students. This helps us to make sure that we re designing curriculum and that the college s resources are being invested for the enriched learning. These are two projects that are ongoing and will be coming up soon. I appreciate your help by filling those out. We re very sensitive by the fact that students are being bombarded by responses. As an institution, we think long and hard about which ones we choose to participate in. We re very interested in getting your input. President Lancaster: Since you re doing first and fourth years and second and third years in different surveys, how are you applying those together? Fred Ribich: We try to do advising survey close to the time of registration. We didn t want to double up NSSE this year. We ll plug in gap next time around. 8. President s Report... Sean Lancaster President Lancaster: Board of Regents meeting went really well. We didn t receive any questions. Please go through HIPs in committees. Do bring those up in committees. We can make final amendments in the full Senate meeting when we get back. For campus improvement projects, Kaitlyn has put together a list of tabling suggestions. We got a request from Campus Ministries for the chapel basement. I ll present their request. 9. Treasurer s Report...Emily Capper

Treasurer Capper: I made a mistake in my budget report. Last year we had 32% claimed. This year, we have 30% claimed so the budget is looking tight. We have less money for supplemental requests, so we are being aware when we give out money for conferences. We need $7000 in the fund at the end of year. If you have supplemental requests, send them in right away. Senator Burma: I know a lot of people are trying to find funding for science, so there might be more funding coming in. Just for everyone to be aware, funding is low for science. Senator Jacobs: For organization allocations, if they formed an organization this year can they claim allocations? Treasurer Capper: They can apply before March 10 th for allocations for next year if they are an organization before then. Senator Jaeshke: Did you take into consideration the adjustments in hall improvement projects? Treasurer Capper: I haven t applied those numbers yet. President Lancaster: This happens every few years, so this isn t a bad part on the treasurer or any of the executive team this year. Treasurer Capper: It s a good problem to have because people are claiming money. I m expecting an 80% claim rate this year. 10. Recorder s Report..... Calyn Thompson Recorder Thompson: Congratulations to the two scholarship winners and I hope everyone has a relaxing break! 11. Academic Ombudsperson s Report Tyler Vogel Vice President Zmudka: Tyler is at the full-faculty meeting. 12. Administrative Ombudsperson s Report..... Emily Laudner Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: I talked to Jason Meyers from the USA Today readership program. We ve used 1300 papers. The New York Times is the lowest used. He told me there s going to be a 26 cent increase per paper. We re cutting out the papers in the Res, Clinton and Vollmer. We re also looking into cutting out New York Times altogether. Recorder Thompson: Do we get the Waterloo Courier? Vice President Zmudka: Yes. Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: We have one more week for the Be Green certification. Senator Cannon: Have you considered switching out USA Today and New York Times for the Washington Post? Senator Mirs: The New York Times might be more utilized in an online subscription. That s where I would read it. President Lancaster: It depends on the readership program which ones we can bundle. It s also hard because half of students want physical papers and half want an online subscription. Senator Matthew: Is USA Today raising price on just their paper or also the Des Moines Register? Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: Just theirs. 13. Executive Assistant for Diversity s Report. Emmett Buckles EAD Buckles: Nothing to report, have a great break everybody. 14. Vice-President s Report....Molly Zmudka

Vice President Zmudka: Nothing to report. 15. Public Relations Director s Report..Kaitlyn Behnken PR Director Behnken: The Senate bonding will be on the Friday when we get back from break on Friday, March 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Due to the Survey Monkey response and current funds, we decided to have a game night in the W classrooms with pizza, rock band and board games. 16. Committee Reports None. 17. Liaison Reports None. 18. Open Senate/Reminders Vice President-Elect Creed: The appointed position applications will be ed out after this meeting. You can apply for more than one position, just me or Tyler. The applications will be due on Thursday, March 17 th. Administrative Ombudsperson Laudner: With the stations being taken out of three residence locations, any ideas of where to put the carts? Recorder Thompson: Journalism and communication. Treasurer Capper: Pick up polos if you haven t. Vice President Zmudka: Yes, please. We bought those for you. Senator French: The first round of the men s conference basketball tournament is tonight. Come to Levick at 7 p.m. to support. 19. Adjournment Motion to adjourn: Treasurer Capper Second: Treasurer-Elect Jobes-Ryan Meeting adjourned: 12:50 p.m.
