1 Meeting Minutes November 14th, 2017 Call to Order: 6:01 pm Roll Call: Approval of the minutes: from Oct 24 th, 2017 Second: Franse Vote: from Oct 31 st, 2017 Motion: Summers Second: Leonard Vote: Senator Reports: Summers: Senator Summers has been working with Senator Thompson on the Resolution on commuter lockers. During this time, they have been conducting surveys so they can create a research report. Thomason: Senator Thomason has been primarily focused on ideas. He has been writing a marketing request for an upcoming idea and working with the President of the Senate on how to improve the golf cart system. Walker: Senator Walker has been working on approving the COFAP program and has also been meeting with students east of the canal. Valenzuela: Senator Valenzuela has been working with Senator Kronstedt about making Lopes Way a wheel-free zone, they are in the process of creating a survey report for that. He also has three resolution ideas approved by the President of the Senate and has a bill on the floor tonight. Senator Thomason asked if they are still in the research phase for the resolution regarding a wheel-free zone on Lopes Way. Yes, they are still in the research phase.

2 Kronstedt: Senator Kronstedt has been working with Senator Valenzuela about making Lopes Way a wheel-free zone, which they are creating a survey and starting the research process. She has also been working on a resolution about extending the library hours and has been conducting a survey regarding this. She finished serving on the Golden Initiative Committee last week and has a bill on the floor tonight. Thompson: Senator Thompson has been working with Senator Summers on the resolution for adding commuter lockers and the research report should be finished soon. He has also met with Rich Oesterle to get feedback on the resolution. He has continued working with the CAB Commuter Team and it has been a successful partnership. Leonard: Senator Leonard has been focusing on administering the final surveys for the resolution that will be on the floor next Senate meeting. Franse: Senator Franse has continued student interaction time, a lot of those conversations have been centered around education. He is determining what specific things regarding education should be addressed in a resolution. He has attended the meeting with Pastor Tim and the Senate where they had a conversation about the vision of the Senate. Has been meeting with the Secretary of the Senate and President of the Senate to discuss the Senate Budget. Is helping create an appropriations workshop for Clubs to help them with the appropriations application process. He has also had several meetings with different Senators about their work the past couple of weeks. Committee Reports: Unfinished Business New Business SB#093 Amendment to ASGCU Bylaws to Include Diversity Coordinator Position Motion: Kronstedt Second: Thompson Senator Kronstedt introduced SB #093. She explained that in the previous Special the Senate approved the creation of the position. This bill states the position description for the Diversity Coordinator(s). Senator Valenzuela proposed an amendment to section 3 line 26 to add ten before (10). Senator Thomason seconded. to amend section 3 line 26

3 bill with included amendment with amendment SB#094 Amendment to ASGCU Bylaws for the Director of Internal Affairs Senator Thompson introduced SB #094. He provided the history of Internal Affairs and explains why it is necessary to amend the Director of Internal Affair s current responsibilities that are laid out in the Bylaws. Senator Franse: Stated his confusion about the difference between SB #094 and SB #095. Senator Thompson explains the difference between the two separate bills. SB#095 Amendment to ASGCU Bylaws for the Director of Internal Affairs Senator Thompson explains the purpose for SB #095 which changes the hour requirements for the Director of Internal Affairs position. Senator Franse asked if it is a change in the work requirement or if it is a typo. Senator Thompson stated that it was a typo in the current Bylaws. SB#096 Amendment to ASGCU Bylaws for the Director of Volunteer GCU Senator Thompson introduces SB#096 and expresses the need to update the job description for the Director of Volunteer GCU in the current Bylaws. Senator Franse is curious why the position descriptions are not being added to the Coordinator positions since the descriptions are being changed for the Director position. Senator Thompson stated that this bill is just related to the Director. Senator Franse asked if there are descriptions for the Coordinator positions. Senator Thompson said there are not. Senator Franse asked why there isn t a bill to add descriptions. Senator Thompson replied that he has not been involved in any discussion regarding creating a bill for that. Senator Walker asked if it is appropriate to pass this bill if there are no changes made to the coordinator positions. Senator Thompson expressed how that should not affect this bill because this one focuses on the Directors positions not on the coordinator positions.

4 Senator Franse stated how he has been informed by the advisor that there will be bills related to the coordinator positions but that they were not created in time for this meeting. SB#097 Canyon Inclusion Club Motion: Valenzuela Second: Summers Senator Valenzuela introduces the Canyon Inclusion Club. Their mission is to establish and foster relationships between Grand Canyon University and disability administering programs at local churches. He then yielded the floor to the representatives of the club to share their vision with the Senate. Senator Franse asked for clarification about what the students who are involved in this club would be doing. The students would go to the churches and work as aids to help the disabled who attend that church. They will be ministering to these children. Senator Walker asked if they are only working with children with disabilities. They will work with all students, not exclusively with the disabled children. They want to help in any way they can. Chief of Staff Report, Hannah Barry Internal Affairs had their first elections information meetings which were very successful. The application for President and Vice President are now opened. The all ASGCU Christmas party is coming up. There are two surveys coming out around Thanksgiving break. Diversity Awareness finally has a complete team and has upcoming events. They will be administering a survey to the student body. Senator Kronstedt is going to be their representative and working with the team. There is a Diversity event tomorrow, One Campus Many Voices at GCBC, and there is another Diversity event on November 30 th. Public Relations is in the process of working on the December stall talk and the Midnight Breakfast is coming up on December 7 th. Marketing is filming the Stall talk video and they are also going to start working on Midnight Breakfast pump up videos and a video for elections. Photography has been collaborating with PR and will have the pictures from Golden Initiative Week up soon. Administrative Vice President Report, Gabby Marrama FCC had their first event of the year last week. There were over 600 freshmen who attended the event. The FCC members are going to be taught more about contact work and what it means to be reaching out to other students at events. Jake and Emily are working on one-on-ones to meet with all the FCC members and they have also received their mentors.

5 Volunteer had their Volunteer Fair and Operation Christmas Child events last week. They are figuring out what adjustments could be made to make the spring Volunteer Fair better. There were over 450 boxes packed for Operation Christmas Child. Students are beginning to reach out to Volunteer GCU to ask about volunteer opportunities. Executive Vice President Report, Matthew Shinn The Senate has a meeting with Pastor Tim last Tuesday where they explained what the Senate does and presented some ideas that the Senate has. These meetings with Pastor Tim will be reoccurring. Vice President Shinn has been working with Senator Franse and the Secretary of the Senate on the budget for this quarter. Legislation is continuing to come through and there are upcoming meetings with Campus Development and Public Safety. Clubs has a appropriations workshops coming up on November 30 th and December 12 th. He has also been working with the Director of Clubs to create a spring timeline and the Clubs Christmas party is going to be on Dec. 1 st for the club officers and members. President s Privilege, Nate Carpenter Golden Initiative week is done. There was a great turnout for Volunteer Fair, Clean Up the City was successful, and Operation Christmas Child had over 450 boxes packed. The Governor Ducey fundraiser was last night, which the executive team and Senate went for support. This Thursday there is going to be a Public Safety meeting with the Senate and the Chief of Public Safety. Advisor s Privilege, Pablo Ciscomani Involvio is finally starting to come to a close. The contracts have come back to GCU for signatures and then implementation will begin. The ASGCU advisors will be attending informative meetings. The application will not be rolled out until the Fall semester so that content can be created during the spring semester. Call to the Audience: An audience member asked about the timeframe to amendment bills, such as the No Wheels on Lopes Way. President of the Senate said that it depends on the time it takes to obtain research on the bill.
