1 PROPOSED ITINERARY WASHINGTON, DC May 8 12, 2018 Marbury Middle School 210 County Road 20 East Marbury, AL PROPOSED ITINERARY ***The days and/or order in which we visit attractions while in Washington D.C. are subject to change based on weather, traffic, etc. All itineraries are subject to change. Every attempt will be made to include all sites mentioned in this itinerary. However, at times, circumstances beyond our control such as long lines, traffic, closures, weather and late arrivals can severely restrict timing and cause items to be excluded. The pace that you, as a group, move from one attraction to another may influence what you are able to do and see. Because of increased security after September 11, 2001, admission to some sites has been severely restricted. For example, it has become very difficult to get large groups into the White House, Capitol, and the Hoover Building. Admission to these buildings is limited and based strictly on availability as determined by their staff. DAY 1: Tuesday, May 8, 2018 Your motor coach will arrive at Marbury Middle School at 3:45 AM in order to begin loading for a 4:30 AM departure. You will depart at 4:30 AM and drive through the day with meal and rest stops as required. You will stop in Atlanta, GA for a full hot breakfast at Golden Corral, Newnan, GA. There will be a stop for lunch at Golden Corral in Lumberton, NC. Dinner tonight will be pizza in Fredericksburg, VA. The estimated time of arrival at your hotel is 10:00 p.m.

They include: the Tomb of the Unknowns, the Changing of the Guard, Audie Murphy's grave, the Memorial to the USS Maine, the Memorial to the Challenger Astronauts, and the Memorial to the men who lost their lives in the failed mission to rescue hostages from the Tehran, Iran embassy. While at the Tomb of the Unknowns, members of your group will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony (Pending confirmation of request). From Arlington National Cemetery, you will go to the National Archives. The Declaration of Independence, all four pages of the Constitution of the United States, and the Bill of Rights (collectively known as the Charters of Freedom), are on display. The Exhibit Hall contains fourteen new document cases. The exhibits in these cases trace the story of the creation of the Charters and the continuing impact of these fundamental documents on the nation and the world. Lunch today will be at the Pentagon City Food Court. After lunch, you will drive along Embassy Row past the U.S. Naval Observatory, site of the official residence of the Vice President, and past the National Clock en route to the Washington National Cathedral (Pending availability). The sixth largest church in the world, this 14 th century-style Gothic wonder is situated on 57 acres and took 83 years to build. Helen Keller, Admiral Dewey and Woodrow Wilson, the only President buried within Washington, DC, are interred there. From the Cathedral, you will go the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. Located along the west bank of the Tidal Basin, it covers about 4.5 acres, the most space of any memorials. It is the newest of the Presidential Memorials. There are four rooms in the memorial, one for each of the four times Roosevelt was elected president. Sculpture, bronze plaques, statuary, and water, depict significant events that happened in each of Mr. Roosevelt s terms in office. Dinner tonight will be at Harry & Harriett s. After dinner, you will go to Twilight Tattoo, a live musical performance by the U.S.Army Drill Team. This event is a highlight for the majority of our groups and is only available May September. Representing those who supported the ground troops are hundreds of faces etched on a polished granite wall. At this same stop is The Lincoln Memorial. Inside, inscriptions from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address flank the 19-foot marble statue of our 16 th President. After Lincoln, you will ride the subway to Rosslyn, VA. Your exit from the subway will be on one of the 5 longest escalators in the world. MEALS INCLUDED: B, L, D DAY 3: Thursday, May 10, 2018 After hot breakfast at your hotel, you will go to the U.S. Capitol Building (Reservations Pending). The current must see in the museum is the newly restored Star Spangled Banner. Located nearby, you may choose to visit the West Building of the National Gallery of Art. The gallery houses works by most of the famous artists including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci that is in America. Dinner tonight will be at Magills. After dinner, you will visit the newest of the War Memorials, The National World War II Memorial. It is a memorial to the more than 14,000,000 America men and women who participated in World War II. NBC newsman Tom Brokaw called this group America s Greatest Generation. Following the World War II Memorial, you will visit the Marine Corp Memorial, better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial. Designed by Felix de Weldon, it remains the largest bronze casting ever made. It is based on the most famous photograph during WWII. The photograph was of the raising of the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi on Japanese held island of Iwo Jima. It is guaranteed to stir your sense of patriotism. Your last stop for the evening will be at the National Air Force Memorial. The United States Air Force Memorial honors the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Air Force and its predecessor organizations, including the Aeronautical Division, U.S. Signal Corps; the Aviation Section, the Army Air Service, the U.S. Army Air Corps, and the U.S. Army Air Forces. MEALS INCLUDED: B, L, D DAY 4: Friday, May 11, 2018 After a hot breakfast at your hotel, you will begin your day with a drive to Mt. Vernon, home of George Washington. While at Mt. Vernon, he escaped the rigors of public office and enjoyed the life of a successful Virginia planter. America s most visited historic house, Mount Vernon, sits on a grassy shaded slope overlooking the Potomac River. Many of the furnishings are original pieces acquired by Washington himself. Mount Vernon is both George Washington s home and final resting place. This southern plantation standing on the banks of the Potomac River details the life of the Father of Our Country while providing fascinating insights into Colonial times. In addition to touring the home, kitchen, stables and laundry: you will be able to view the tomb of Mr. and Mrs. Washington and view the slave cemetery at Mt. Vernon. Your visit is early in the season but as time allows, you may choose to visit the George Washington: Pioneer Farmer exhibition, a four acre demonstration farm that features recreation of Washington s 16 sided treading barn. Be sure to allow time for the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center. It features a twenty-three theater and gallery experiences. Many of them with interactive technology illuminate the detailed story of Washington s life, including his military and political careers. Next you will go to visit to the grounds of the White House (Pending Availability). Although open on a limited basis, it continues to be the only home of a head of state in the world that is open to the public for free. It will provide some excellent photo opportunities of the House. You might even get lucky and see the President. A request has been made through Congressman Everette s office for reservations for you to tour the house. From the White House, you will go to Ford s Theatre (pending availability). Restored in 1968, the 19 th century Ford s Theatre is a live, working theatre located in downtown Washington, DC. As a living tribute to President Abraham Lincoln s love of the performing arts, Ford s Theatre produces musical and plays that embody the family values, underscore multiculturalism, and illuminate the eclectic character of American life. Following Ford s you will go to the National Air & Space Museum. The National Air and Space Museum holds in trust some
4 50,000 objects, including aircraft, spacecraft, engines, rockets, uniforms, spacesuits, balloons and artwork. Famous aircraft in the collection include: The 1903 Wright Brothers Flyer; a Lockheed Vega flown by Amelia Earhart; the B- 26 Bomber Flak Bait that flew the most missions of any bomber over Europe during WWII; the Rutan Voyager, the first plane to fly around the world non-stop without refueling; the X1 that Chuck Yeager flew as he broke the sound barrier for the first time; and a Ryan NYP, the Spirit of St. Louis that was flown by Charles A. Lindberg on the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. You will have your lunch while you are at the National Air and Space Museum. While the group is at the National Air & Space Museum you may also choose to visit other Smithsonian Museums that are located nearby. They include the Hirshhorn Museum (sculpture) the Freer Gallery (art) the National Museum of African Art, and the Sackler Gallery (Asian art). The National Museum of the American Indian is located next door to the Air & Space Museum. This museum is more a cultural museum than a historical one. It interprets the culture of many tribes of both North America and South America. Next door to the Museum of the American Indian is the National Botanical Gardens. The newly renovated Conservatory offers visitors a beautiful and fascinating living plant museum. Plus, if by this time you are simply exhausted, you may enjoy a bit of time to rest and relax on the National Mall. Next you will go to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall) This privately funded memorial has drawn millions who have come to touch the over 58,000 names of service men and women who died or are missing in Viet Nam. While at the Wall the search for the names of friends and relatives, make pencil rubbings of names, leave flowers, letters, flags and other personal mementos. In the same area you will see the Nurses in Viet Nam Memorial. It honors each of the eight military nurses killed in Viet Nam. The statue depicts three women, one of whom is tending to a wounded soldier. Planted around the statue s plaza are eight trees to commemorate each of the women who died in Viet Nam. Next you will go to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. This beautiful domed memorial features the Palladian style of architecture favored by Jefferson. The19-foot statue of the third president stands beneath a rotunda inscribed with passages from the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson s famous writings. Looking from the memorial across the Tidal Basin provides an unforgettable view of the city. Early evening you will depart the city and drive to Woodbridge, VA to enjoy dinner at the Old Country Buffet. Next you will begin your drive back home, driving thru the night, with rest stops as needed.
