The students will arrive there late on March 21 and March 22 and will be checking out of the hotel early on March 23. 3 DAY OF TRIP INFORMATION On behalf of CD Trips thank you for letting us take your Pawling Middle School students out to Washington, D.C. We are proud to be your Common Denominator for organized, hassle free and fun trips that give back to the community. A full itinerary of activities are scheduled for March CD Trips will be providing a lightly buttered bagel upon arrival and some snacks along the way to keep everyone happy and fed. Below is some information in reference to your visit to Washington, D.C. that we hope is helpful to you. So sit back, enjoy and have lots of fun! We will meet our guides upon arrival on March 21. They will be with us through the day as we visit the Holocaust Museum and a number of monuments and memorials. We will eat at the Hard Rock Café, visit more monuments and memorials and will then check into our hotel; SpringHills Suites by Marriott Centerville Chantilly, 5920 Trinity Parkway Centerville, VA. We have put in a request for a tour of the White House. For security and scheduling purposes, the White House will not confirm whether our group has been accepted until a few days before the date. If we are approved, they will provide us with a time between 7:30 am and 1:30 PM and we will schedule our tour of the US Capital and the many Smithsonian Museums before or after our White House tour. That evening we will have a hearty dinner at Bucca de Beppo and then attend a Kennedy Center Theatre performance of Sheer Madness. After the show we will return to the SpringHill Suites Centreville Chantilly, 5920 Trinity Parkway, Centreville, VA, ,. Our final day will begin with a guided tour of Arlington Cemetery including the home of General Lee and a wreath laying of the wreath at the changing of the guard. We will then visit the Pandas at the National Zoo and at 1PM we will depart for home. After a brief dinner stop (not included in price) we will return to Pawling MS at approximately 7PM The following meals or vouchers will be included; Breakfast Day 2 and 3 Lunch Day 1 ($10 voucher) Day 2 ($10 Voucher) and Day 3 ($20 voucher) Dinner Day 1 and Day 2 Limit of Tour Company Responsibility CD Trips will either accompany or meet group at each venue to coordinate the activity. CD Trips is not responsible for the behavior of the students of Pawling MS and has no authority to discipline those students. In the event of any problem or concern that is brought to the attention of a CD Trip representative, that problem or concern will be brought to the attention of the lead school representative and they will take the action that is in accordance with their policies and procedures. In the event that actions of a student or chaperone cause a delay in the itinerary that results in a the inability of the group to fully or partly participate in a planned activity, CD Trips will consult with the lead school representative to determine the best solution for the group. 3

4 VENUE DESCRIPTION GUIDED TOUR OF MONUMENTS AND MEMORIALS The best way to appreciate this magnificent capital city is with a private guide, luxury transportation, and a customized tour itinerary. There is no better way to learn about the history of the city, the neighborhoods, the monuments, and the people whose stories of diplomacy, tragedy, love, and success fill every corner of this unique federal enclave. HOLOCAUST MUSEUM Using more than 900 artifacts, 70 video monitors, and four theaters showing historic film footage and eyewitness testimonies, the USHMM s Permanent Exhibition are the most visited exhibit at the Museum. Upon entering large industrial elevators on the first floor, visitors are given identification cards, each of which tells the story of a random victim or survivor of the Holocaust. Upon exiting these elevators on the fourth floor, visitors walk through a chronological history of the Holocaust, starting with the Nazi rise to power led by Adolf Hitler, Topics dealt with include Aryan ideology, Kristallnacht, Anti-Semitism, and the American response to Nazi Germany. Visitors continue walking to the third floor, where they learn about ghettos and the Final Solution, by which the Nazis tried to exterminate the European Jews, and killed six million, many in gas chambers. The Permanent Exhibition ends on the second floor with the liberation of Nazi concentration camps by Allied forces; it includes a continuously looped film of Holocaust survivor testimony. First-time visitors spend an average of two to three hours in this self-guided exhibition. Due to certain images and subject matter, it is recommended for visitors 11 years of age and older UNITED STATES CAPITOL The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is a symbol of the American people and their government, the meeting place of the nation's legislature. The Capitol also houses an important collection of American art, and it is an architectural achievement in its own right. It is a working office building as well as a tourist attraction visited by millions every year. Construction of the U.S. Capitol began in In November 1800, the U.S. Congress met in the first completed portion, the north wing. In the 1850s, major extensions to the North and South ends of the Capitol were authorized because of the great westward expansion of our nation and the resultant growth of Congress. Since that time, the U.S. Capitol and its stately dome have become international symbols of our representative democracy. The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center is the newest addition to this historic complex. At nearly 580,000 square feet, the Visitor Center is the largest project in the Capitol's more than two-century history and is approximately three quarters the size of the Capitol itself. The entire facility is located underground on the east side of the Capitol so as not to detract from the appearance of the Capitol and the grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Established in 1846 "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge," is a group of museums and research centers administered by the United States government. Originally organized as the "United States National Museum," that name ceased to exist as an administrative entity in Termed "the nation's attic for its eclectic holdings of 138 million items, the Institution's Washington, D.C., nucleus of nineteen museums, nine research centers, and zoo many of them historical or architectural landmarks is the largest such complex in the world. 4

5 JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is a performing arts center located on the Potomac River, adjacent to the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. The Center, which opened September 8, 1971, is a multi-dimensional facility, and as memorial to John F. Kennedy and a cultural center, it produces a wide array of performances encompassing the genres of theater, dance, ballet, and orchestral, chamber, jazz, popular, and folk music, offers multi-media performances for adults and children, and is a nexus of arts education. SHEER MADNESS Set in present-day Georgetown, Shear Madness engages locals and visitors alike as armchair detectives to help solve the scissor-stabbing murder of a famed concert pianist who lives above the Shear Madness unisex hairstyling salon. The show combines up-to-the-minute improvisational humor and a mixture of audience sleuthing to deliver a unique performance each night. Shear Madness has been running at the Kennedy Center for 26 years, giving more than 12,000 performances, and is the second longest play in the history of American Theater ARILINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY the most famous cemetery in the country, is the final resting place for many of our nation s greatest heroes including more than 300,000 veterans of every American conflict from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan. NATIONAL ZOO The National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. It is part of the Smithsonian Institution. Founded in 1889, its mission is to "provide engaging experiences with animals and create and share knowledge to save wildlife and habitats". PANDAS The zoo's Giant Panda Habitat features three outdoor areas with animal enrichment as well as an indoor area with a rocky outcrop, a waterfall, and viewing areas. The zoo's pandas, named Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, are on loan from the China Wildlife Conservation Association, and will live at the zoo until They are the focus of a research, conservation, and breeding program that aims to preserve the species. Mei Xiang and Tian Tian successfully had a male cub, named Tai Shan, in Tai Shan currently lives at the Bifengxia Panda Base in Sichuan, China, taking part in Bifengxia's breeding program. On September 16, 2012, Mei Xiang gave birth to another cub, but the cub died six days after its birth. On August 23, 2013, Mei Xiang gave birth to two cubs; one, a female named Bao Bao, survived, while the other was stillborn. [15] The pandas live at the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat, a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor exhibit. The exhibit is designed to replicate the rocky, lush terrain of the pandas' natural habitat. [7] Mei delivered two cubs in August 2015; one died a few days later. [16] Both cubs, fraternal twins, were sired by Tian Tian; the surviving male was given the name Bei Bei on September 25, 2015 and was on public exhibit in January
