New Newseum - The only interactive museum of news. Embassy Row - Embassies, associations, foundations, and clubs have claimed and restored these lovely mansions that were built after the civil war by the powerful and socially elite. Washington National Cathedral - Standing higher than the Washington Monument, it is the sixth largest church in the world. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial - A unique memorial, it is divided into four outdoor galleries, or rooms, one for each of FDR s terms in office. Arlington National Cemetery - Veterans and military casualties from every one of the nation s wars are interred in the cemetery, from the American Revolution through the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is also the final resting place for President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The Tomb of the Unknowns are also located on these famous 612 acres. Ford s Theatre - The site of the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. After being shot, the fatally wounded president was carried across the street to the Petersen House, where he died the next morning. We will visit these sites, pending availability. New National Museum of Crime & Punishment - Opened in May 2008, the museum explores the history of crime, law enforcement, forensic science, crime scene investigation and the consequences of committing a crime. Co-owned and operated by John Walsh, host of America s Most Wanted, the National Museum of Crime & Punishment provides guests of all ages with memorable insight into the issues of crime and crime fighting through a captivating interactive, entertaining and education experience. International Spy Museum The International Spy Museum opened in Washington, DC on July 19, It is the only public museum in the United States solely dedicated to espionage and the only one in the world to provide a global perspective on an all-but-invisible profession that has shaped history and continues to have a significant impact on world events. The Museum features the largest collection of international espionage artifacts ever placed on public display. Many of these objects are being seen by the public for the first time. National Portrait Gallery The Smithsonian s National Portrait Gallery tells the history of America through individuals who have shaped its culture. Through the visual arts, performing arts and new media, the Portrait Gallery portrays poets and presidents, visionaries and villains, actors and activists whose lives tell the American story. (Note: During this portion of the itinerary, you will have to choose (1) of the above museums.) The United States Capitol - The most recognized symbol of democratic government in the world, the US Capital has housed Congress since It is where Congress meets to write the laws of our nation, and where presidents are inaugurated. (If for any reason an inside tour is not available, our guide will conduct a tour outside of the building.) The Library of Congress - The largest national library in the world with more than 100 million items in three buildings. (Time permitting; and, If for any reason an inside tour is not available, our guide will conduct a tour outside of the building.) The Supreme Court Building - The U. S. Supreme Court has the highest judicial authority in the United States. It was originally located in the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. The current building was constructed in 1935 and built to match the architectural style of the nearby congressional buildings. On the front stairway are two statues, the Contemplation of Justice and the Guardian or Authority of Law. The World War II Memorial, which opened to the public on April 29, 2004, is located at what was once the Rainbow Pool, centered between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. 6 The Lincoln Memorial - The Lincoln Memorial is located on the National Mall in Washington D.C. It is a United States Presidential memorial built to honor the 16 th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. The building is in the form of a Greek Doric temple and contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln and inscriptions from his Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address. The memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King s "I Have a Dream" speech. The Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Statue) - The Marine Corps War Memorial stands as a symbol of this grateful Nation's esteem for the honored dead of the U.S. Marine Corps. While the statue depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the United States since Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts A walk through a living memorial to President John F. 7 The Newseum a 250,000- square-foot museum of news offers visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits. The Newseum features seven levels of galleries, theaters, retail spaces and visitor services. 8 Arlington National Cemetery For the almost four million people who visit annually, Arlington National Cemetery represents many different things. For some, it is a chance to walk among headstones that chronicle American history; for many, it is an opportunity to remember and honor the nation s war heroes; and for others, it is a place to say a last farewell during funeral services for a family member or friend. We will be at Arlington National Cemetery during the moving changing of the Guards ceremony. Veterans and military casualties from every one of the nation's wars are interred in the cemetery, from the American Revolution through the military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is also the final resting place for President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The Tomb of the Unknowns, Arlington House home of Civil War General Robert E. Lee, and Space Shuttle Challenger Astronaut s Memorial are also located on these famous 612 acres. Ford's Theatre is a historic theatre in Washington, D.C., used for various stage performances beginning in the 1860s. It is also the site of the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, After being shot, the fatally wounded president was carried across the street to the Petersen House, where he died the next morning. FORD S THEATRE The theatre was later used as a warehouse and office building. It was renovated and re-opened as a theater during the 1960s. During the 2000s it was renovated again, opening on February 12, 2009, in commemoration of Lincoln's bicentennial. We will be visiting these locations, pending availability. PETERSEN HOUSE 6

9 The Jefferson Memorial - The 19-foot bronze statue is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, an American Founding Father and the third President of the United States. It stands beneath a rotunda inscribed with passages from the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson s other famous writings. Air Force Memorial - Built on a hillside overlooking the Pentagon, the memorial is bold and graceful and truly representational of the Air Force. Central to the design are three stainless steel spires which soar skyward. Other key elements of the Memorial include a bronze Honor Guard, inscription walls, and an open glass Chamber of Contemplation. Mt. Vernon - The estate of George Washington is America s most visited historic house. It is both George Washington s home and final resting place. It sits on a grassy, shaded slope overlooking the Potomac River. Washington escaped the rigors of public office and enjoyed the life of a successful Virginia planter. We will visit the Ford Orientation Center & Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center at Mount Vernon. The Center contains sculptures, paintings, portraits, models, photos, films, documents and diverse artifacts, with descriptions and quotations describing the life, times and accomplishments of our nation s first president. With 25 state-of-the-art galleries, the museum displays many objects shown at Mount Vernon for the first time. 7
