XXIII, Issue 9 May 2018 AAUW-LC ANNUAL MEETING TUESDAY, MAY 8, Vote on Officers, Budget, Bylaws; Program by LCPD Officer Aaron Glymph on Personal Safety at Home or Away AAUW-LC branch will hold our Annual Meeting on Tuesday evening, May 8, from 6-8 pm at Peace Lutheran Church, 1701 Missouri Ave. The meeting will open with election of branch officers. It will also include voting for adoption of both next year's budget and updated branch bylaws. It is important for you to attend, as a quorum of our total membership is required for the vote to be held at this meeting. The slate of officers to be elected by the membership is: Co-President, Christa Slaton; Co-Program VP, Marsha Ogden; Co- Membership VP, Laura Bemis; and Treasurer, Christine Long. The following officers will continue to serve, completing their two-year terms: Co-President, Beverly Chambers; Co-Program VP, Julia Bruner; Co-Membership VP, Marsha Hokkanen; and Secretary, Fran Plec. Members were sent a copy of the proposed changes in our bylaws in an released on April 22. 2 The evening also promises a program on a topic of importance to us all - personal safety. Are you sometimes unsure of what to do if you hear strange noises at night? Do you know what to do if you think someone is following your car? Las Cruces Police Department Community Liaison Officer Aaron Glymph will give us advice on how to stay safe whether at home or out and about. He will be ready to answer your questions. Many of us live alone, and many of us go out alone on the street or driving, so this will be a helpful presentation for everyone. Bring a friend! TIME TO RENEW YOUR AAUW MEMBERSHIP! Renewal of your AAUW annual membership for is now open! After an almost ten year hiatus AAUW National voted to increase National membership dues by $10, therefore: The dues are $97. National $59 ($56 of the national dues are tax deductible) State $18 LC Branch $20 $97 total NOTE! Current and new members who wish their names and contact information to be included in the Yearbook must pay their dues no later than June 30, We definitely encourage members to pay on-line, and an invoice with specific instructions will be ed to all current members who have not yet renewed. From our Co-Presidents Beverly Chambers & Christa Slaton One of the highlights of this month was attending the meetings of the County Commission and the City Council where they passed resolutions in support of Equal Pay Day, April 4. Public Policy Chair Christina Little took the leadership role in presenting these resolutions. She, Shirley Armstrong, and Carol Ann

3 Council joined us in attendance at these events. (photo by William Little) After weeks of intense work, debate, and deliberation, our branch's Bylaws Committee presented a set of revisions approved by the Board. Kudos to Carol Ann Council, Marcia Hokkanen, Christina Little, Londa Seiffert, and Judy McGuire for their thoughtful diligence in leading this effort. Primary changes include composition of board membership, term limits for board members, and revised job descriptions of committee chairs. They will be submitted for discussion and approval by the membership at our annual meeting The Board also approved the proposed budget for , which will be presented at the annual meeting by Treasurer Christine Long. Finally, Nominating Committee Chair Marsha Odgen will present the proposed slate of officers for the new year. Revising bylaws has also been a priority of the AAUW National office. Following several weeks allotted for members to comment on the proposed changes, voting opened on April 25. The proposed bylaws amendments and resolutions can be found online on the Bylaws Amendment Vote webpage at aauw.org. As this report was being written, we were on our way to the AAUW-NM State Convention in Carlsbad to bring back interesting news and creative ideas to help us achieve our goals and enjoying ourselves while doing so. Minutes come to us compliments of Secretary Fran Plec. AAUW-NM STATE BOARD ELECTED Congratulations to Beverly Chambers and Christa Slaton, recently

4 elected to the AAUW-NM Board. Beverly will serve as Co- President (with Sylvia Fink, Albuquerque branch) and Christa as Finance Chair. Add to that the AAUW-NM State Convention will be held next spring here in Las Cruces! AAUW LC PROPOSED LEADERSHIP POSITIONS from the Bylaws Committee The attachment below labeled "AAUW Las Cruces Proposed Leadership Positions" sets forth the recommendation of the Bylaws committee regarding board composition. We currently have 20 board members. The recommended changes would reduce this to 13 voting members, assuming the current "co-" positions continue. We recommend five elected positions which could be up to 10 elected positions if each position had a "co". Terms are described in the Bylaw changes which was sent separately as an . The board is recommending four appointed positions with vote: Academic Chair, Communications Chair, Public Policy Chair and Special Projects Chair. In addition, these appointed positions would have responsibility for monitoring and reporting on the various functions/positions listed below each of the four voting positions. We recommend the Parliamentarian attend board meetings, without vote. The Chair of the Nominating Committee is listed after the elected positions, since this individual is elected by the Board each year. AAUW Las Cruces Proposed Leadership Positions MEMBERSHIP We are happy to welcome the newest addition to the Las Cruces branch. Marlyn Zahler is a Returning Honorary Life Member. Advocacy in Action In New Mexico for every dollar men make, women make 82 cents. EQUAL PAY- Employers MUST provide men and women with equal pay for equal work. COVER ALL EMPLOYEES - Public, private and small business employers are all covered, no exceptions for those covered by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. OFFER PROTECTIONS - Protect employees from intentional and unintentional discrimination.

5 Employer cannot retaliate or discriminate against employees involved in legal proceedings to enforce the law. No retaliation or discrimination against employees who discuss their wages. State contractors MUST comply with nondiscrimination laws. Employers can not reduce another employee's pay to comply with the law. Pay discrimination hotline Employers cannot request salary history. Employers must post a salary range in job advertisements. Employers cannot provide less favorable career opportunities based on sex. 6 Bridge Daytime Bridge: The AAUW day-time bridge group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 1pm to approximately 4:00pm. The topic for discussion is Turkey: Partner in Crisis. Contact Marsha Ogden at for additional information. Mahjong Rita Worrell will be hosting the oriental Mah Jong group on Wednesday afternoons at 3:00 pm. This schedule will continue throughout the summer. It is a great time for anyone new to learn and join the group as some members will be traveling throughout the summer. Thank you to Shirley Armstrong for planning a program that was interesting for members and the spouses who joined us. Following the every-other-month schedule, the next Going Places will be in June. Rita Worrell is planning a drive to Cloudcroft for lunch with a stop along the way at a cherry orchard to buy and maybe pick cherries. Check back in June for details. Laugh and Learn Spanish Classes are wrapping up for the summer. New classes will begin in September. Check the OMV and website for additional information. April's Branch Meeting!

7 Members and guests again enjoyed an exciting and compelling program at April's general meeting. Four young women who are alumna of AAUW Tech Trek NM shared their experiences at the weeklong STEM summer camp. Emily Alvarado, Vivian Allen, Rosa Taylor and Rigel Liefeld were introduced by branch STEM Coordinator Becca Galves. When the program turned to an examination of Title IX, presenter and AAUW LC member Kay Brilliant, a retired NEA union organizer, was completely successful in organizing us into small discussion groups for lively conversation about our own past as students and professional women. How interesting it was to compare our experiences as they were affected by Title IX, the law with the purpose of leveling the playing field without a gender bias!
