1 LONG HILL TOWNSHIP BOARD OF EDUCATION WORKSESSION/REGULAR MEETING April 30, 2018 The Long Hill Township Board of Education held a Worksession/Regular Meeting on Monday, April 30, 2018 in the Long Hill Township Town Hall. The meeting was called to order by Board President Marta Moakley at 7:30 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Mr. Bundonis, Mrs. Butler, Mr. Carn, Mrs. Case, Miss Nyquist, Mr. O Leary, Mrs. Moakley. MEMBERS ABSENT: OTHERS PRESENT: Mr. DiGiorgio, Ms. Raban. ADEQUATE NOTICE OF MEETING: Adequate notice of this meeting of the Long Hill Township Board of Education was given as required by the Open Public Meetings Act as follows: Notice was sent to the Courier News, Echoes Sentinel and the Daily Record on October 20, Notice was posted on the bulletin board in the first floor entrance hall of the School District Administration Building, Gillette, New Jersey. Notices were filed with the Township Clerk; and notices were mailed to all persons who have requested individual notice pursuant to the Open Public Meetings Act. COMMUNICATIONS: Mrs. Moakley noted that the Board had received correspondence regarding the proposed changes to Central School s schedule for next year. Dr. Acevedo noted that parents have been directed to send inquiries to Mr. Viturello and to meet with the district for more dialogue on 5/14 at 7:00 p.m. or 5/15 at 1:00 p.m. at CMS. He mentioned that the letter made reference to personnel items which is something he could not discuss. A final recommendation will be made to the Board on 6/11. BOARD COMMITTEE REPORTS LHPEC- Mr. O Leary provided details about its next scheduled meeting. WHRHS Liaison Mr. Bundonis attended the most recent meeting. He reported on notable events and activities that were mentioned at the meeting. 1

2 Planning Board Liaison Mrs. Moakley stated that she attended the most recent Planning Board meeting and she reported on the meeting s topics. Township Liaison Mrs. Moakley stated that she attended the most recent Township meeting and she reported on the meeting s topics. Negotiations Committee Mrs. Moakley reported that the Committee has met with the LHEA and the process is moving forward in a smooth manner. Educational Services Commission of Morris County Miss Nyquist stated that she attended their recent meeting and provided an update. Finance Committee Mr. Carn noted that the Committee met. All of the financials are in order and the financial resolutions are recommended for approval. PTO Mrs. Butler reported on the upcoming activities and scheduled events. SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT Dr. Acevedo reported on the following: -The Long Hill Historical Society held a voluntary essay contest where students had to interview someone who attended Long Hill Schools at least 15 years ago. On 5/3 they will recognize 7 of the district s students. He thanked all of the students who participated. -The district Steering Committee on Future Ready Schools NJ met this week and felt that it would be an aggressive timeline to submit the required indicators of success by 6/30. Work will continue in the hopes of being certified in A District Leadership Team meeting will be held on 5/24/18 to discuss the next steps. -He met with Sam Cornish at the Long Hill Historical Society on 4/4 to obtain some historical facts about the district. Information will be added to a section of the district website. -He reminded special education parents that on 5/14, a representative from the ESCNJ will be at the Millington Library to meet with parents to discuss the special education audit and receive feedback. Parents will also have an opportunity to complete a survey. The results of this survey, along with the findings, will be shared with the Board in June. - At the last meeting, Ms. Nyquist inquired if the district website was ADA compliant. Mrs. Connelly did confirm with the website provider that it is ADA Compliant. -On 4/18, the district held its security meeting after the PTO meeting. Approximately 25 parents were present. He thanked Chief Naga, Detective Sutton, Shayne Daly, and Mr. Sensi from the NJDOE who also attended and answered questions from parents in the audience. -Dr. Grip, the demographer from Statistical Forecasting, is presenting tonight on the details of his demographic report. SPECIAL PRESENTATION FROM DEMOGRAPHER STATISTICAL FORECASTING, LLC. Dr. Grip provided a presentation of the demographic study he completed for the district. The Board and audience asked questions about the study s findings and Dr. Grip responded. ADMINISTRATORS REPORTS Central Middle School Mr. Viturello reported on the following: Goal 1 Student Achievement -He is working on refining summer projects for ELA and Mathematics so that they are uniform 2

3 among the grade levels and connected to the learning standards. -Link It Benchmark C assessments have been completed by all Math and ELA classrooms. -He congratulated Morris County Superintendent Award Winner Matt Miller, who will be honored tomorrow evening. -The Math Relay Competition will take place on 5/3. The Gifted and Talented Quest Program will host its first Ignite Conference on 5/25. On 5/16, 7 th Grade students will attend the Morristown Museum to hear Holocaust survivors speak. Ms. Paugh is planning an After School Poetry Event in the near future. -PARCC testing will take place from 5/7-5/10. The State Science Assessment will be on 5/22 and 5/23. Goal 4 Culture, Climate, and Communication -Sophia Fish, a 6th grade student, inspired over 100 people to make donations to Ronald McDonald House of Central & Northern New Jersey. The project raised $2,130. On 4/25, Ms. Collin, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House of Central & Northern New Jersey, and Ms. Brouwer, Marketing Director, visited Central Middle School for a check presentation ceremony with the 6th grade students. -Today, students watched live streaming of the Vex Robotics Challenge during lunch. Long Hill has three middle school teams competing. -Student Council just completed a fundraiser to support the purchase of a vital signs monitor for the Long Hill First Aid Squad. -Ms. Lazirko held a Peer Leadership event for all grade levels in April and the topic was resilience. The next peer leadership topic and activities are planned for May. -With the collaboration of the PTO, visiting author David Lumbar will be at CMS on 5/17. -Since the 2 water bottle refilling stations were installed in the beginning of the year, the use of 9,179 water bottles was saved. He thanked the PTO and Building and Grounds for their support. -There will be an evening performance of the Spring Music Concert on 5/16 and a school-wide performance on 5/17. -He will be hosting two meetings for parents about the proposed schedule, on 5/15 and 5/16. A survey has been developed to gain the perspective of students. A fire drill was held on 4/30 and a table top meeting was held on 4/18. Millington School Mrs. Dawson reported on the following: Goal #1 Student Achievement -She provided updates on the activities of the following Millington PLCs: Conquer Math, 5 th Grade Content Area Literacy, Literacy Workshop and All Subject Lesson Integration. -PARCC testing began at Millington today. -She is in the process of collecting SGO data and finalizing the summative evaluations of all faculty and staff members. Goal #4 Culture/Climate and Communication -Millington students participated in the Pennies for Patients drive this past month. The money raised goes towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Millington School raised $5,350. She thanked Ms. Rodrigues and her team for organizing it. -On behalf of the Millington Faculty and Staff, she thanked the PTO for the wonderful luncheon they provided today. -The 5 th Grade Evening of the Arts is tomorrow with the art show beginning at 6:30 and band concert at 7:00. -She congratulated Mrs. Jane Fragnito for completing her Master of Education in Literacy and 3

4 Dr. Monique Kaye for earning her PhD in Speech Language Pathology, and Ms. Colleen Clifford for earning a certificate in ELL. Gillette School/Director of Curriculum Dr. Jones reported on the following: Goal 1: Student Achievement -The summative evaluations and SGO s have been completed for all teachers at Gillette School. -Kindergarten Workshop was held for incoming kindergartners and it was well attended. -She held curriculum meetings in the areas of scheduling, math, literacy, program evaluations and NGSS. -She met with sending district curriculum coordinators to discuss professional development opportunities and site visits with supervisors. -She met with the BSI teachers to review student progress and plan out next year. -She attended a workshop on QSAC and has been gathering the necessary information from Rubicon and Genesis. Goal 4: Culture and Climate/Communication -The Kindergarteners will sing for the seniors at the senior center on 5/16 and will also have their concert there on 5/17. -The Kindergarteners had their trip to the Paper Mill Playhouse to see Charlotte s Web and 1st graders are going to the Trailside in Mountainside this week. -Kindergarten screening will take place on 5/3 and 5/4. -The mural will be painted 5/10-5/22 with parents and students painting the gym. The theme is a train carrying the alphabet letters. -Field Day on 5/22 will have an Olympic theme. The 1st grade hosted career day during which community members came to visit each classroom to discuss their careers. -She held a ScIP meeting to discuss professional development and observations for Gillette School. Dean of Students Ms. Backer reported on the following: Goal 1: Student Achievement -PARCC testing began today at Millington and it went well. Testing will continue through 5/19 at Millington. Testing will take place at Central next week for all students Monday-Thursday. The NJSLS Science Assessment will be given to students in grade 5 and 8 on 5/22 and 5/23. -Earlier this month, she provided training for all teachers at Millington and Central on administering the PARCC test. -She met with related service professionals to review their job goals to ensure they were completed before submitting for their summative evaluations. Goal 4: Culture and Climate/Communication -I&RS meetings were held in all three buildings. An informational brochure is now available on the district s website to provide parents with specific information on the process. -Melissa Straub from Youth Training solutions conducted assemblies for 5th-8th grade students on the meaning of Digital Citizenship, bullying and cyber-bullying, social media awareness and consequences, posting information safely and celebrating diversity. She also conducted a parent seminar. -The end of year School Safety Team meetings will take place in early June to discuss the culture and climate of the schools this year and begin to develop goals for the school year. 4

5 Coordinator of Technology Services Mr. Paugh reported on the following: -The Gmail migration included the transfer of over 700,000 s in 3 days. PARCC training began at Millington today with no technological issues. -He evaluated the technology-related elements of Future Ready to prioritize and make plans for the process. He continues to investigate ways to reduce printing costs. A wireless heatmap survey was performed by Dyntek to assess wireless coverage and gather other wireless data. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATOR UPDATE Mr. Bellino spoke about the steps in the budget approval process and the public hearing on the budget, which will take place at the May 7, 2018 Board meeting. The budget will be discussed tonight in private session as it may be impacted by personnel matters. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON AGENDA ITEMS At this point, the Board of Education welcomes comments from any member of the public. Please note that as per Board Policy #1130, a total of fifteen (15) minutes is allocated for public comments at any single Board meeting. In order to provide residents the opportunity to comment, individual speakers are limited to three minutes each at any particular Board meeting. TO BA to the position of Assistant to the Business Administrator at the annual salary of $50, prorated from start date which will commence once successful criminal history review has been completed. 19. RESOLVED that the Long Hill Township Board of Education, APPROVAL OF upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, revise the start REVISED START DATE date of Nina Coulter, Maternity Leave Replacement 3rd Grade OF N.C OULTER Millington School to April 10, 2018 with 3 transition days prior to start date. 10

RESOLVED that the Long Hill Township Board of Education, APPROVAL OF upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, approve an EXTENSION TO extension to the maternity leave for Kathryn Mazzaferro, K. MAZZAFERRO Part Time (.40 FTE) Basic Skills Teacher, Gillette School. MATERNITY LEAVE The previous approval was for the maternity leave to conclude on May 7, The leave is hereby extended through June 30, January 2, 2018 to February 1, 2018 February 2, 2018 through May 7, 2018 May 8, 2018 through June 30, 2018 Paid maternity leave utilizing accumulated sick days NJ Family Leave for Childcare (unpaid) Unpaid Leave 21. JONES upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, accept the RESIGNATION resignation of Emily Jones from the position of Part Time Teacher Assistant, Gillette School, effective June 30, RESOLVED that the Long Hill Township Board of Education, S.
