3 Boardman House (Saugus, Massachusetts) The Boardman House (circa 1687), also known as the Scotch-Boardman House or the Bennett-Boardman House, is a historic house located at 17 Howard Street, Saugus, Massachusetts. It is a National Historic Landmark. Estimates of the house's history have varied over the years, but it is currently believed that the house was constructed circa 1687 for William Boardman. The house was built as two rooms per floor, with a central chimney. On the ground floor it has a parlor and hall, with two bedrooms above, and an attic above the bedrooms. By 1696 a characteristic lean-to was added at the rear for the kitchen and milkroom. There are five fireplaces in the house, one in each of the original rooms, and another in the kitchen. Although the house's general shape has not changed since this time, its original leaded-glass windows were at some point replaced with more modern sash windows, two original front gables were removed, and in about 1725 a new interior staircase was added. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961.[2][1] It is owned by Historic New England and open to the public two days per year.

January 6, 1705] April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author and printer, satirist, political theorist, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman and diplomat. As a scientist he was a major figure in the Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and a musical instrument. He formed both the first public lending library in America and first fire department in Pennsylvania. He was an early proponent of colonial unity and as a political writer and activist he, more than anyone, invented the idea of an American nation[1] and as a diplomat during the American Revolution, he secured the French alliance that helped to make independence possible. Franklin is credited as being foundational to the roots of American values and character, a marriage of the practical and democratic Puritan values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit,

5 self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of Henry Steele Commager, "In Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat."[2] To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin, "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become."[3] Franklin became a newspaper editor, printer, and merchant in Philadelphia, becoming very wealthy, writing and publishing Poor Richard's Almanack and the Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin was interested in science and technology, and gained international renown for his famous experiments. He played a major role in establishing the University of Pennsylvania and Franklin & Marshall College and was elected the first president of the American Philosophical Society. Franklin became a national hero in America when he spearheaded the effort to have Parliament repeal the unpopular Stamp Act. An accomplished diplomat, he was widely admired among the French as American minister to Paris and was a major figure in the development of positive Franco-American relations. From 1775 to 1776, Franklin was Postmaster General under the Continental Congress and from 1785 to 1788 was President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. Toward the end of his life, he became one of the most prominent abolitionists. Franklin's colorful life and legacy of scientific and political achievement, and status as one of America's most influential Founding Fathers, has seen Franklin honored on coinage and money; warships; the names of many towns, counties, educational institutions, namesakes, and companies; and more than two centuries after his death, countless cultural references. 6 Poor Richard's Almanack (sometimes Almanac) was a yearly almanack published by Benjamin Franklin, who adopted the pseudonym of "Poor Richard" or "Richard Saunders" for this purpose. The publication appeared continually from 1732 to It was a best seller for a pamphlet published in the American colonies; print runs reached 10,000 per year.[1][2] Franklin, the American inventor, statesman, and publisher, achieved success with Poor Richard's Almanack. Almanacks were very popular books in colonial America, with people in the colonies using them for the mixture of seasonal weather forecasts, practical household hints, puzzles, and other amusements they offered.[3] Poor Richard's Almanack was popular for all of these reasons, and also for its extensive use of wordplay, with many examples derived from the work surviving in the contemporary American vernacular.[4]

9 アメリゴ ヴェスプッチ アメリゴ ヴェスプッチ (Amerigo Vespucci 1454 年 3 月 9 日 年 2 月 22 日 ) は アメリカ州を探検したイタリアの探検家 商人 フィレンツェ生まれ 1497 年 年の間に 4 度 新大陸へ航海 クリストファー コロンブスを始めとするヨーロッパ人がアメリカ大陸を 東アジア であると考えたのに対し ヴェスプッチは アジアとは別の大陸 ( ヨーロッパから見て 新大陸 ) であると主張した そしてこの事実が確認され 彼のラテン語名 Americus Vespucius からこの新大陸に アメリカ という名前が付けられた (Americus の女性形が America) その後 1512 年 セビリアで死去した

10 クリストファー コロンブス クリストファー コロンブス (1451 年頃 年 5 月 20 日 ) はイタリアのジェノヴァ出身の探検家 航海者 商人 大航海時代において最初にアメリカ海域へ到達したイタリア人である 日本語では クリストファー コロンブス の表記が定着しているが 他国では通用しないことが多い イタリア語名はクリストーフォロ コロンボ (Cristoforo Colombo) スペイン語( カスティーリャ語 ) 名はクリストバル コロン (Cristóbal Colón) ラテン語ではクリストフォルス コルンブス (Christophorus Columbus) 英語での発音はクリストファー コランバス (Christopher Columbus) である 前歴 コロンブスの地図 (1490) 毛織物業を営むドメニコ コロンボの息子として 1451 年に生まれたとの文書があるが これについては異説も多く はっきりした事は解らない 出身地に関してもスペイン イタリア北部等諸説がありはっきりしていない 学会では少数ながらユダヤ人の出身であるという説も唱えられている 若い頃から航海に関わっていたようではあるが これも良く解らない エーゲ海のキオス島へ交易航海に出たりしたといわれるが はっきりしない 1476 年に航海に出た際に 乗船が戦争に巻き込まれて沈没し 弟のバルトロメがいるリスボンに身を寄

11 せたという アジアを目指していたかどうかは杳として解らないが 1477 年に大西洋の向こう側の知識 を求めアイスランドへ渡航した 1479 年に結婚している その後約一年間 マデイラ諸島のひとつに住 み 1480 年代の初めには少なくとも一回は ギニアとゴールドコーストまで航海をした [1] このリスボンでエラトステネスやトスカネッリの地球球体説に影響され 自分の航海経験を加味して西 へ西へ進み続ければアジアへと到達できるという考えに達した この時にコロンブスが想定していた地 球像は実際のものより 2 割ほど小さいものであった [ 編集 ] 栄光 1484 年 ポルトガルのジョアン 2 世に航海のための援助を求めるが断られる その頃ポルトガルはアフリカの喜望峰に達しており わざわざ新しい航路を開拓しなくてもインドに着くと考えられていたからである 1488 年にはバルトロメウ ディアスがこの東周りの航路を開拓した ポルトガルは自身を必要としていないと考えたコロンブスは 1486 年にカスティーリャのイサベル 1 世とその夫フェルナンド 5 世 ( アラゴン王としてはフェルナンド 2 世 ) にも援助を願い出るが 良い返事は得られなかった 当時のスペインではイスラム勢力が占拠するグラナダを攻めるために準備を整えており コロンブスに対する援助ができないのも当然であった しかし 1492 年 1 月 2 日に スペインはグラナダを攻め落としレコンキスタを完遂すると 地理上の発見 のための財政上の余裕ができ またポルトガルに対する対抗心も手伝い フェルナンド国王の財務長官であったルイス デ サンタンヘルを初めとしたスペイン王室は コロンブスに援助を与えることに決めた 4 月 17 日 フェルナンドとイザベルは正式にコロンブスと契約した イザベルは宝石まで与えたが それは自身の指輪一つだけだったとも言われている 1492 年 8 月 3 日 大西洋をインドを目指してパロス港を出航した この時の編成はキャラベル船ニーニ ャ号とピンタ号 ナオ船のサンタ マリア号の 3 隻で総乗組員数は約 90 人 (120 人という説も ) 一旦 カナリア諸島へ寄り 大航海の準備を整えた後 一気に西進した 大西洋は極端に島の少ない大 洋であり 船員の間には次第に不安が募っていった 当時の最新科学では地球が球体であるということ はほぼ常識となっていたが 船員の間では地球を平面とする旧来の考えも根強く残っていた コロンブス自身は平気な振りをしていたが 計算を越えて長い航海となったことに不安を感じるように なる 10 月 6 日には小規模な暴動が起こり 3 日後には船員の不安は頂点に達し コロンブスに迫って あと 3 日で陸地が見つからなかったら引き返す と約束させた コロンブスの航路 そして 10 月 11 日の日付が変わろうとする時 ピンタ号の水夫が陸地を発見した 翌朝 コロンブスは

12 その島に上陸し ここを占領してサン サルバドル島と名づける ( サン サルバドルという名前には 聖なる救世主 という意味がある この名前は 上にあるように船内が荒れていた時に発見し ほっとして思わず付けてしまったという説もある ) その後 いくつかの小さな島を見つけた後 現在のキューバ島を発見し ここをフアナ島と名づけた その後 同船船長であるマルティン アロンソ ピンソンの独断によりピンタ号が一時離脱してしまうが 12 月 6 日にはイスパニョーラ島を発見 24 日にサンタ マリア号が座礁してしまう しかし その残骸を利用して要塞を作り アメリカにおけるスペイン初の入植地を作った この入植地には 50 名の男が残った 年が明け 1493 年 1 月 6 日にピンタ号と再び合流する 1 月 16 日 スペインへの帰還を命じ 3 月 15 日にパロス港へ帰還した 帰還したコロンブスを歓迎して宮殿では盛大な式典が開かれた コロンブスは航海に先んじて 発見地の総督職 世襲提督の地位 発見地から上がる収益の 10 分の 1 を貰う契約を交わしていた また陸地を発見した者には賞金が王夫婦から与えられるとされていたのだが コロンブスは自分が先に発見したと言い張り これをせしめている [ 編集 ] コロンブスの卵式典で 誰でも西へ行けば陸地にぶつかる 造作も無いことだ などとコロンブスの成功を妬む人々に対し コロンブスは 誰かこの卵を机に立ててみて下さい と言い 誰も出来なかった後でコロンブスは軽く卵の先を割ってから机に立てた そんな方法なら誰でも出来る と言う人々に対し コロンブスは 人のした後では造作もないことだ と言い返した これが有名な コロンブスの卵 の逸話であり 誰でも出来る事でも 最初に実行するのは至難であり 柔軟な発想力が必要 逆転の発想 という意の故事で今日使われているが 逸話自体は後世の創作であるという説が一般的である [ 編集 ] 挫折同じ年の 9 月に 17 隻 1500 人で出発した 2 度目の航海はその乗員の中に農民や坑夫を含み 植民目的であった 11 月にドミニカ島に到着したが 前回作った居留地に行ってみると現地人により破壊されており 残した人間は全て殺されていた ( もっとも その人間たちも現地人を虐殺し強姦した [ 要出典 ] のであるが ) コロンブスはここを放棄して新しくイサベル植民地を築いた しかし植民の間では植民地での生活に不満が立ち上り 現地人の間でもヨーロッパ人の行為に対して怒りが重積していた 1495 年に現地人との戦いに勝利した後 捕らえた現地人を奴隷として本国に送るが イザベル女王はこれを送り返し コロンブスの統治に対する調査委員を派遣した 驚いたコロンブスは慌てて本国へ戻って釈明し 罪は免れた

13 ジェノヴァにあるコロンブスのモニュメント 1498 年 5 月 6 隻の船で 3 度目の航海に出る 今度は南よりの航路を取り 現在のベネズエラのオリノコ川の河口に上陸した その膨大な量の河水が海水ではなく真水であったことから それだけの大河を蓄えるのは大陸であるということをコロンブスは認めざるを得なかった しかし彼は 最期まで自らが発見した島をアジアだと主張し続けたという その後 北上してサントドミンゴに着くと後を任せていた弟 バルトロメの統治の悪さから反乱が起きていた コロンブスは説得を続けるが 入植者たちはこれを中々受け入れず 1500 年 8 月に本国から来た査察官により逮捕され 本国へと送還された 罪に問われる事は免れたものの全ての地位を剥奪される それでもコロンブスは 4 度目となる航海を企画するが 王からの援助は小型のボロ舟 4 隻というものであった 1502 年に出航したが イスパニョーラ島への寄港は禁じられており パナマ周辺を 6 か月さまよったが 最後は難破して救助され 1504 年 11 月にスペインへ戻った しかし 1504 年末には彼に信頼を寄せていたイサベル女王が死去し スペイン王室はコロンブスに対してさらに冷淡になった 帰国後は病気になり 1506 年 5 月 20 日スペインのバリャドリッドにて死去 その遺骨はセビリアの修道院に納められたが 1542 年にサントドミンゴの大聖堂に移された サントドミンゴ大聖堂の地下にあるコロンブスの墓碑銘には 輝く 有名な紳士 ドン クリストバル コロン と書かれている コロンブスの死後 ドイツの地理学者マルティン ヴァルトゼミューラーが手がけた地図には 南米大陸の発見者としてコロンブスではなく アメリゴ ヴェスプッチの名前が記されてしまった この結果 ヨーロッパでは新大陸全域を指す言葉として コロンビア ではなく アメリカ が使われるようになった

14 John Singleton Copley John Singleton Copley (1738[1] ) was an American painter, born presumably in Boston, Massachusetts and a son of Richard and Mary Singleton Copley, both Irish. He is famous for his portrait paintings of important figures in colonial New England, depicting in particular middle-class subjects. His paintings were innovative in their tendency to depict artifacts relating to these individuals' lives.

16 Joan Didion Joan Didion (born December 5, 1934) is an American journalist, essayist, and novelist. Didion contributes regularly to The New York Review of Books. In a 1979 New York Times review of Didion's collection The White Album, critic Michiko Kakutani noted, "Novelist and poet James Dickey has called Didion 'the finest woman prose stylist writing in English today.'"[1] With her late husband, the writer John Gregory Dunne, Didion collaborated on several screenplays. She lives in New York City.

Daley Richard Joseph Daley (May 15, 1902 December 20, 1976) served for 21 years as the undisputed Democratic boss of Chicago and is considered by historians to be the "last of the big city bosses." He played a major role in the history of the Democratic Party, especially with his support of John F. Kennedy in 1960 and of Hubert Humphrey in Daley was Chicago's third mayor in a row from the working-class, heavily Irish American Bridgeport neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, and he lived there his entire life. Daley had two bases of power, serving as Chairman of the Cook County Democratic Central Committee from 1953, and as mayor of Chicago from He used both positions until his death in 1976 to dominate party and civic affairs. Daley's well-organized Democratic political machine was often accused of corruption and though many of Daley's subordinates were jailed, Daley was never personally formally accused of corruption. He is remembered for doing much to avoid the declines that some other "rust belt" cities like Cleveland and Detroit experienced during the same period. He had a strong base of support in Chicago's Irish Catholic community, and he was treated by national politicians such as Lyndon B. Johnson as a preeminent Irish American, with special connections to

18 the Kennedy family. Richard M. Daley, the current and second longest-serving mayor of Chicago, is his son.
