1 BCE BEAKER PEOPLE from Iberia (Spain) came on boats to many European countries, including the UK. They introduced the CUP (or the BEAKER) as well as bronze arrows, axes and ornaments. What would we do without the cup today? BCE CELTIC PEOPLE from Europe settled. They introduced IRON and today we use iron for cars, roofs and cutlery CE ROMANS invaded and settled in the UK. They introduced TOWNS, the CALENDAR, LATIN, SPORTS, ROADS and the BEDROOM! Many of our words today come from Latin. c.390 CE ANGLES from Denmark and SAXONS from Germany invaded and settled in the UK. Many East-Anglian names like Sutton Hoo, Costessey and Soham were Anglo-Saxon. Bedford means the River Crossing in Anglo-Saxon. Essex was an early Saxon Kingdom. King Cnut built one of the most famous monasteries in Bury St Edmunds.

2 1066 CE The NORMANS from France conquered Britain. They introduced great castles and flowers the Pink and the Wallflower. In Colchester you can still see the remains of a Norman castle. 1200s CE TRADERS from Europe settled in the UK. They introduced MARKETS in major towns. They settled in Lincolnshire and Norfolk because the flat land reminded them of home. Today we still have the famous Norwich Market CE The GYPSY presence in Britain was first recorded in They brought with them their CRAFTSMANSHIP and artistry in MUSIC, DANCE, STORYTELLING and FORTUNE-TELLING. It is believed they travelled from North West India on a journey that began in the first millennium - more than 500 years before their arrival here. 1670s CE French Protestants (HUGUENOTS) came because they were in danger in France. They introduced silkweaving, paper-making and clock-making. It was a Huguenot, Isaac Minet, who introduced the Planetarium, which is still open in London.

3 1700s - Early 1900s CE SAILORS from India, South-East Asia, China, West Africa, Somalia and the Yemen came to the UK to trade. They introduced SPICES that we use today in cooking. Late 1700s CE French people fled the French Revolution. People who had been rich and famous in France became COAL MEN, WINDOW CLEANERS and WAITERS CE SLAVERY is abolished in Britain. Former slaves settle here. Think of all the Irish influences in Britain today, such as IRISH DANCING and GUINNESS.

4 1850s CE onwards Lots of immigrants from Europe came to work. Persecuted EAST EUROPEAN JEWISH immigrants came to Britain to be BUSINESSMEN or PROFESSIONALS. GERMANS came as CLERKS; ITALIANS introduced ICE- CREAM VANS and PIZZA CE Hitler s anti-semitism forced thousands of Jewish refugees to look for safety. The Second World War caused more refugees. German and European children arrived on the Kindertransport trains, and many families gave them a safe home. POLISH Prisoners of War came here to settle. There is now a Polish club in every large British town, including Cambridge. Look out for Kabanos sausage in the supermarket CE The partition of India brought immigrants from the Indian sub-continent. SIKHS, MUSLIMS, CHRISTIANS and HINDUS contributed to our multi-faith country. They introduced CURRY which has been named as Britain s favourite food.

5 1948 CE Workers from the Caribbean started to settle here. They helped to rebuild parts of Britain destroyed by the War. They introduced REGGAE and CARNIVAL to Britain. To this day the UK has a large Caribbean population contributing to all areas of culture and work. 1960s CE People from all over THE WORLD came to work in our National Health Service. They have contributed as surgeons, doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and care assistants. They have come from Africa, Asia, South America, Australasia, the Caribbean, the Indian sub-continent and Eastern and Western Europe. 1960s - Present People from all over the world come to work in Britain. British people also leave the UK to work abroad. Asylum-seekers have escaped war and persecution in their countries, including Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Colombia, Chile, Iraq, Vietnam, Somalia and Angola. They came to Britain to be safe.
