1 Volume Issue 7 September 2009 President s Line Inside this issue: Program, contests 2 Ham announcements 3 Summers over, its now time to get back to work. This summer I spent a lot of time traveling. My first trip was back to my home town, Ft. Wayne, IN. Along the way I was able to work 144 and 440. Met some nice hams along the way. In Ft. Wayne, I met one of the board members of the local radio club. He invited me to take part in their Field Day and I spent one day helping to put up antennas. Along with takings pictures I had a grand time. They put up 9 antennas for field day. The next trip my daughter and I went to Iceland. We spent 8 days there. The weather was good and I took lots of pictures and videos. On the next to the last day I saw a lady in a truck with lots of antennas and stopped her to see if she was a ham. She said her husband was and I gave her my ham call and told her to have him give me a call. She said that her husband didn t speak much Eng- lish. Needless to say he didn t call. I did get to see one 20M antenna above a apt. but couldn't stop to check it out. My third trip was to Canada for 6 days where I got to use my 144 handheld. Got to talk to a few hams there. So this trip wasn t a total loss for ham relations between countries. If anyone has gone on a vacation or a trip and wants to send me some pictures and text I will include it in the newsletter. 73 s NO7B Field day pictures 4 List of Members 5-6 Club Information 7 CVARS Meeting Notes 8-9 CVARS Officers 10

2 Page 2 September Program Well, guess we will try to again go with two programs, One by John Ellingson on raising an antenna at Jim Campbell K7YZ s house. The other program will be the DVD on the K5K Kingman Reef 2000 Expedition. This a little shorter than the other DVD, but I think it will fit in better with the time. A living, very small isolated coral reef one thousand miles S.W. of Hawaii...this 450 long, 40 wide pile of shells and coral was home for this international team. Despite a heck of a storm, a most successful DXpedition. 80,839 contacts were logged on 160 through 6 meteers making this the 3rd Don t miss this fun packed program. It is 20 min long and very entertaining. Team members attending include Dick Morrison, K7KFM; Don McDougall, W60A; Jim Campbell, K7YZ; Hugh McDonald, AC7XF; and I. Three candidates took their general test. Jeff Jaques, KB7JJJ aced the exam scoring thirty-five for thirty-five. The other two did not make it this time. Both vowed to hit the books and retake the test. This is the fifth exam session this year for the CVARS VE Team with a total offorty-seven candidates tested. Bill Harwell, AC7SR ~H z Mt. St Helens Repeater Group A lot has happened since I took over the Mt. St. Helens Repeater. It was a joint project between Frank Hoffman, WB7DZG, and I. Frank is now a silent key so I find the repeater is not as fun as it used to be and to be fair, my interests have changed. I had lots of plans but they went away with Frank. I've had a lot of fun with the repeater but I've decided to sell it. I hope that someone in the area would like to take it on as their own project. There's still a lot that can be done to make it even better. The current lease with the Department of Transportation is good until April Please contact me if you would like more details. Visitors are welcomed.

8 August 5, 2009 CVARS Board Meeting: Doug stated that there were an insufficient number of the board members present this evening to conduct a board meeting. Board meetings are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the LCFD #6, 2123 S. Market Blvd. in Chehalis prior to the General Meeting. CVARS General Meeting: Call to Order by Vice-President: Doug Skaggs, KC7TPK at 7:34 p.m. Doug gave opening remarks; asked if there were any guests, upgraded licenses or new calls. (Jeff Mayfield, KE7ACE had upgraded to General four months ago but said he s not one that can afford a vanity call sign!) Members introduced themselves in succession around the room by giving their name, call and home base location. Minutes: Bob Majoros, KD7RTL, minutes were not available to be read. Instead a brief summary was given. Treasurer s Report and Swap Meet Results: by John Ellington, K7OSK. Account Balance is $ Swap meet expenses were $1152 leaving us a profit of $ John thinks he has enough wrist-bands for one more swap. Radio Club of Tacoma HamFest is August 8th in Spanaway. John noted that there are less Ham- Fests occurring. John mentioned he was glad to see some members attend the chicken BBQ at his home after the event. Ken Wages, KH6CQH mentioned that the SWW Fair would not need to supply us as many tables if we set-up with plywood/doors and saw horses. Licensing Exams: Bill Harwell, AC7SR said he was glad to have rented the room at the Twin City Senior Center for $25 to conduct the exam this year. One fellow took/passed both the Technician and General Exams with 100% and was encouraged to try for the Extra Class where he only missed by four questions. Two others receive their Technician license and one fellow passed the General exam. Next exam is Saturday, August 22 at the Onalaska Community Church. Good of the Order: It was mentioned that the Chronicle has the wrong location printed for the CVARS meeting. Doug assigned Bob to get the correct information printed in the Chronicle. Bill Harwell, AC7SR held up some Packet Radio hardware and stated that Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and National Traffic System (NTS) are reviving Packet Radio to relay messages. A presentation on this topic will be at the next ARES meeting the 3rd Wednesday (August 19th) at 7 p.m. in the Law and Justice Building. You need not be a member of ARES, just interested in the topic to attend their meeting. Bill has completed wiring his home lighting and came across the bunny transmitter. He and Donna Harwell, KF7AVE, are planning a hunt in September on a yet unspecified Saturday. Program: Bill Lahan, KE7YZH gave a very good talk on J-Poles with a bit of history, benefits and design criteria of this a flexible antenna. Requiring no ground plane reflector, this inexpensive and very handy antenna can be rolled up for easy portable use in your emergency Page 8

9 Page 9 communications kit and will outperform a rubber ducky. A problem is associated with differing dielectrics affecting the velocity factor and thus determining the dimensional lengths. Bill is attempting to construct a length table for the different dielectrics and frequencies and with the help of test equipment from Bill Harwell and Jim Campbell, KE7TBK, should have some results at our next meeting on September 2. General Meeting Adjourned: 8:42 p.m.
