1 Friday, March 28, :00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Registration Desk Open 8:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. Main Session: Trauma on the Job: How Journalists Cope With The Impact of Traumatic Stories - From deadly fires to courageous cancer battles to tragedies that impact an entire community, journalists cover their fair share of traumatic stories. We see, first hand, how these types of stories impact the people directly affected and are tasked with telling their stories. But after the paper goes to print or the newscast wraps up for the evening, how does the journalist cope with those traumatic emotions? Often times we don t talk about this type of trauma in our newsroom, but it still has a tremendous impact on us. Our session begins with a presentation from Mike Walter, anchor for CCTV America and a former Ochberg fellow with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at Columbia University. Mike will highlight portions of his documentary, Breaking News, Breaking Down. He ll talk about how the documentary came to be and how other well-known journalists have dealt with trauma while covering breaking news stories. Walter will then lead a discussion about how journalists from our region have dealt with trauma in their own ways on the job. The forms of trauma can vary, ranging from breaking news to graphic court cases to dealing with families going through trauma. It can also take the shape of personal trauma that now impacts a journalist s mentality on the job. Panelists: Matt McKinney, crime/news reporter for the Star David Joles, Star Tribune Lindsey Seavert, reporter, KARE Jim Bickal, Morning Edition senior producer, Minnesota Public 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m. SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards Luncheon Midwest Journalism Conference March 28 & 29, :15 5:00 p.m. - Critiques Print, Radio & Television Bring your best work (Television should be on DVD, radio work on CD, please) and have the best in the business give you feedback.
