With temps in the teens and wind chill in the single digits, there s not much we can do to enjoy the car hobby except hibernate! The membership list for AACA is about done, and the news letter should be headed out to everyone. The car show committees are hard at work for the new year. As for myself, I m kept busy with heating my garage long enough each day to do some body work on my hot rod! Hopefully it will be done by May. Not much else to say, but I ll leave you with a trivia question for the next meeting. What was the first car company to offer air conditioning? 3 VOLUME 28 NO. 3 THE SPLIT RIM PAGE 3 Classic car enthusiasts also abound abroad During my many travels with the Foreign Service, I'm always pleasantly surprised to see that many people in other countries also appreciate antique and classic cars. Such was the case during a 10 week assignment to Uruguay this summer. During the country's Heritage Day celebration, I happened upon a display of some fine Ford Model A's and T's, as well as other makes and VWs, Mercedes and even a Messerschmidt. (See photo 2, above right.) On another day continuing my journey out into the countryside, I observed quite a number of cars rusting away out in the fields, a variety of makes and models. (See photo 3, bottom right.) (See Abroad on page 4.) models. (See photo 1, above). Another time I visited a winery about a 20 minute drive outside of Montevideo. Not only is the winery in a lovely setting with a nice restaurant, they also have a museum of original or fully restored antique cars. There are Ford A's and T's, Chevys,

One restaurant that I visited had the doors off a Fodor Model A and set it up for dining (See photo 4, above. ) It's great to know that no matter where we go in the world we can appreciate what a great hobby we have.
