1 NEWSLETTER February 2010 President s Notes For some time I have heard rumblings about changes to regulations regarding the importation of fish food and live fish into Canada. A couple of weeks ago, I received an from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency ( CFIA ) that confirmed that there are changes in the works. In brief, the federal government is proposing that importation of ornamental fish for the aquarium will be treated much the same as the importation of birds and reptiles. Shipments will be subject to inspection and there will be fairly extensive paperwork for importing fish. There some exemptions for aquarists but they are very limited in scope. There is a list of fishes that can only be imported with a permit (Schedule III), this schedule includes many common tropical fish kept by our members including: goldfish, koi, zebra danios, gouramis and guppies. Individuals may import some fish on this schedule (for example goldfish and guppies but not koi or dwarf gourami) if the animal has not been shown or displayed outside Canada, is imported by owner and accompanied by owner at point of entry and you present proof of your identity and of ownership of the animal and you haven t done this within the last 90 days. For all fish that are not on the Schedule, in order to import them, you will need the following: the name and address of the exporter (where you purchased them from), the name and address of the importer (the owner), the taxonomic name, life stage, and number of animals being imported, country of origin and whether it was captive born or wild all of which needs to be in a document that is satisfactory to an inspector. The link for this site is: impe.shtml Click on the additional information link for the detailed regulations. These regulations are to take effect March, 1, There is an opportunity for public input until March 7, At the very least we need to clarify what would constitute a document that is satisfactory to an inspector so that we know what we need to have with us if we are bringing back fish. I for one fairly frequently attend auctions and conventions in the US with the express intent of bringing back fish. By the way these regulations not only apply to fish but also to invertebrates such as crayfish and shrimps. I would encourage all clubs and as many of their members as possible to make submissions regarding the regulations to the CFIA (with copies to their local Members of Parliament and to the Minister of Agriculture, Gerry Ritz) to make sure that exemptions for aquarists are preserved, clarified and if possible expanded. All the best, Bob
