Agricltre: Immokalee s Economic Engine Make class aware of the major crrent and ftre challenges facing the agricltral bsiness, farm workers and immigrants in the Immokalee commnity and how the varios commnity sectors are responding to and addressing these challenges
Agricltre is the economic engine of Immokalee Agricltre acconts for 60% of all employment and 20% of all bsiness establishments Immokalee s Crops inclde Ccmbers, bell peppers, citrs A third of or fresh tomatoes, and 90% of the nadon s winter tomatoes, are grown in Florida However Florida Agricltre and hence Immokalee are nder pressre:
Labor Decline of Immigrant workers are entering the USA Florida's vegetable indstry is heavily reliant on migrant labor. many of these laborers are ndocmented "The flow of new arrivals (to work on farms) has stopped," "It's the people newly in this contry who will do the work that people here don't want to do." Mexico's falling ferdlity rate dropped from 7.2 to 2.5 children per family from 1960s to 2000, according to data from the United NaDons. Low wages aren't the isse, a commission of $2.50 a box. "A good picker can do 10 or 12 boxes per hor," earning more than $200 a day, The average is abot half that. Wages have grown from $7.80 in 2002 to $10.35 per hor in 2011
Labor Shortage H2A Visas H2A visa program - brings in temporary agricltre workers from LaDn America. Expensive. Grower s responsibility more than $1,000 in transportadon and government visa fees for each laborer the cost of hosing the workers' horly pay, which by law has to meet or exceed that of American laborers'. Changes to law nder Trmp administradon Short fall of immigradon is midgated by H2A visas and the drop in the need for workers

Whether Immokalee? Immokalee s past and present have been intricacy intertwined with the fortnes of agricltre Agricltre is nder siege: declining demand, compeddve imports; increasing expenses, dieses; less land nder cldvadon; less need for manpower Immokalee is a rral slm, which if condne to rely on agricltre will fail, as many rral towns have in America Many efforts by many good capable organizadons and agencys have worked in Immokalee, bt lijle has changed
The Ftre of Immokalee What is the impact on Immokalee ftre of the decline of agricltral prodcdon, hence a corresponding decline in farm workers. How is Immokalee responding to this challenge? Waving Impact Fees Bsiness incbator
Lipman Family Farms 02/16/2017
Macro Overview Florida agricltre is a mlti billion dollar contribtor to or economy, 2nd only to torism. Florida farms cover more than 9 million acres and are a model of conservation. Farmers, de to advances like micro-drip irrigation, are sing 50% of the water today than they were jst 10 years ago. That is 13 billion gallons of water! Sothwest Florida has been helping to feed the nation for decades. The winter months give s nearly perfect weather (80 degrees dring the day and 60 at night) to grow vegetables. 2
Macro Overview Bt the pressres against farming are significant. When I entered the prodce bsiness in 1985, there were over 100 tomato growers in the state of Florida. Today there are 12...and that nmber will go down this year. Since we began harvesting in October, we have sold millions of boxes of beatifl tomatoes and vegetables...all at a loss. There is static demand so the perfect weather and improved farming techniqes of today have given s an excess spply. Increased spply cases a rsh to the bottom as farmers know that they need to "sell it or smell it". 3
Lipman Overview North America s Largest Open Field Tomato Grower Divided into 2 Sections: Farming Florida Soth Carolina Virginia California Mexico Vale Added Repack and Processing 13 Locations 4
Lipman Overview We employ thosands of people. Many of them are migrant laborers. In the 6 short years since I have been rnning this company, we have continally lost or ability to find people. Or average harvester makes over $30,000/ year, far more than alternative jobs, bt pressres have contined to shrink or spply of people. Florida is now a model of social responsibility, bt this is togh work. Let me be very clear, regardless of what yo hear from or national leaders...these are hard working, God fearing, law abiding people who do work that no one else wants to do 5
Lipman Overview Tomatoes are the world's largest vegetable category. (technically a frit) Global prodction is arond 130 million tons. Abot 2/3 is fresh market and the rest is sed for processing. Lipman Farm #7 here in Naples is the largest continos tomato farm in the US encompassing nearly 5,000 acres. Each year we lay over 3,000 miles of plastic mlch and plant arond 9 million tomato plants. We se over 31,000 miles of twine to tie the crop. 6
Lipman Overview It takes abot 100 days for a plant to be ready for harvest. The average yield is abot 12 ponds per plant, bt this year has been more than that. In the months of November and December we packed over 500,000 more boxes than last year on the same nmber of planted acres. That is why the market is so cheap. This time of the year, nearly 800 people harvest arond 2 million ponds of tomatoes a day on or Naples Farm. That is nearly 50 tractor trailers of prodct. There are over 80 John Deere tractors on that one farm. In total, Lipman owns over 450 John Deere nits. 7

Lipman Ftre The Lipman Family has a long term view of bsiness and allows the leadership team to do the right thing. There will most likely be fewer tomato farmers in Florida next year, bt we will be here. We will plant the same nmber of acres and wait for the market to change. We have a debt free balance sheet that gives s the power to think long term. What does the ftre hold? Farming will be togh. We know that. Sstainability will be a given. Competition from Mexico will contine to pt pressre on s and land costs will force more ot of farming. The best farm land in Florida is along the coast. We know that is now nearly all developed. It will take committed families like the Lipmans to feed s. Abraham Lincoln referred to agricltre as the "vital interest of the nation". Never was a more accrate statement made! 9
