H.R. 2499, the Puerto Rico Democracy Act of 2009 introduced last October, provides for making the decision in a two-phase vote. In the first phase, voters would have the option to vote to continue Puerto Rico's present political status as a self-governing commonwealth or to change, according to language in the bill. If they vote to change their status, they would hold a second vote to decide on either statehood or independence. If Puerto Rican residents voted for statehood, their vote would still have to be approved by Congress. North Texas representatives voting to approve the resolution were Jeb Hensarling, Shelia Jackson Lee, and Eddie Bernice Johnson. Voting against the resolution were Joe Barton, Michael Burgess, Kenny Marchant, and Pete Sessions. Kay Granger did not vote. Other recent legislative news: Rep. Henry Waxman slipped an obscure provision into the House-passed financial reform measure, HR 4173, which would give the Federal Trade Commission new powers to monitor nutritional supplements. Some fear the provision could be expanded over other sectors of the economy. The Senate financial reform bill, S You can read more about the Senate bill at Don t forget you can follow current legislation at:
3 Meeting Minutes 3 Women in the Outdoors Bush Legacy Republican Women of Weatherford April 15th, 2010 Fire Oak Grill, Weatherford, Texas The regular monthly meeting of Bush Legacy Republican Women of Weatherford was called to order at 12:00 pm by Evon Markum, sitting in for President Judy Flanagin. Don Markum gave the invocation. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Mattie Parker, as well as the Pledge to the Texas Flag. Evon Markum welcomed and recognized the elected officials, candidates, and guests. BLRWW Board Officers were also recognized. Joan Shaw introduced her guest, Lyn Manoco; Pat Peale, TFRW, introduced herself; and Dottie Worthington introduced her guest, Tammy Armour. A quorum check was made and there was a quorum present. Dottie Worthington made a motion to approve the Board Meeting Minutes and Elyse Carter seconded the motion. The motion was approved. Treasurer Robin Gentry presented the Register Report and the budget balance. Pat Martin made a motion to accept the report and was seconded by Elyse Carter. The motion carried. Membership Chairman Dottie Worthington welcomed a new member, Tammy Armour. Tammy and her family are new to the area and she learned of BLRWW from the Chamber of Commerce. She attended the luncheon and decided to become a member. Several BLRWW members took part in this year s Women in the Outdoors event earlier this month at the Sweeney Ranch outside Weatherford. Classes included fishing, kayaking, gun safety, and much more. Old Business: Another trip to the airport to "Greet the Troops" will be on May 15th, not May 29th, as previously reported. New Business: Four BLRWW Honorees for the "Tribute to Women" Brunch at the State Convention were elected. They are Judy Flanagin, Zan Prince, Carolyn Estes, and Evon Markum. The Convention will be June at the Hyatt Regency/Dallas Convention Center. Jeannie Leonard asked that members consider contributing to the Veteran's Administration. A reception will be held this evening, April 15th, from 5pm to 7pm, for officials running for re-election in Weatherford. The public is invited. Bylaws & Legislation Chairman Vicki Wallis: Vicki was not at the luncheon. Joan Shaw introduced the monthly guest speaker, Hon. Don Schnebly, Parker County District Attorney, and Sheriff Larry Fowler, Parker County Sheriff's Office, and Mr. Robert DeBoise, Senior Assistant Parker County District Attorney. Mr. Schnebly reported on the increasing crime in Parker County, mainly due to drugs, and Sheriff Fowler informed us on how the Sheriff's Office is dealing with the increasing crime rate and how we, as private citizens, can help in protecting our area and our homes. Hospitality Chairman Dodie Jordan worked the check-in desk and welcomed members and guests as they arrived. Announcements and Reminders: Attendees to the State Convention Brunch need to pay for their meal. Literacy Chairman Brooke Worthington: Brooke was not at the luncheon.
