1 Burnet Cou nty Republic an Women s Club March, 2015 BURNET COUNTY REPUBLICAN WOMEN CLUB S NEWS We Care, We Communicate, We Educate Congressman Roger Williams Guest Speaker, March 12 th Luncheon Awards and Recognition: Spirit of Enterprise Award U.S. Chamber of Commerce Guardian of Small Business Award National Federation of Independent Business Hero of Main Street National Retail Federation Friend of the Farm Bureau American Farm Bureau Federation Thomas Jefferson Award International Foodservice Distributors Association Crime Fighter of the Year North Texas Crime Commission Constituent Service Award National Write Your Congressman Roger Williams represents the 25th District of Texas in the United States Congress, a district that stretches from Tarrant County in the North to Hays County in the South and includes much of Austin and the Texas Hill Country. Prior to his election in November 2012, Congressman Williams served his country in a number of ways and brings a unique background to Congress. He was raised in the Fort Worth area where he graduated from high school and later played baseball at Texas Christian University. After graduating from college, he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves where he played in their farm system before an injury ended his sports career and forced him to begin his business career. He began working in the family car business and has owned and operated the business for 44 years. Along the way, he also became involved civically and politically. He served as Regional Finance Chairman for Governor Bush in 1994 and 1998 before he went on to later serve as the North Texas Chairman for the Bush/Cheney 2000 campaign. Additionally, as well as the North Texas Finance Chairman and National Grassroots Fundraising Chairman for Bush/Cheney '04, Inc. Williams was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2001 as the Chairman of the Republican National Finance Committee's Eagles Program. He has also served as State Finance Chair for John Cornyn for U.S. Senate, Inc., in 2002 and as the National Director of the "Patriots" program for Senator Cornyn. In 2005, Governor Rick Perry appointed Congressman Williams to serve as Texas Secretary of State. As Chief Election Officer for Texas, he worked to ensure the uniform application and interpretation of election laws throughout the state. The Congressman worked tirelessly to promote economic development, investment and job creation in Texas. He also served as the state's Chief Liaison for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs as well as Chair of the state's 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Response Strike Force. Congressman Williams was first elected to the 113th Congress on November 6th, 2012 and served on both the House Committee on the Budget, along with the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure. On November 4, 2014 Congressman Williams was elected to his second term in Congress. He has been selected to serve on the prestigious Financial Services Committee that has oversight responsibility for U.S. banks, credit unions, consumer credit, as well as the housing and insurance industry.

2 January and February have proven to be exciting and invigorating for me as President of this club of wonderful, working, GOP women. We began early in January with Andi Ball, field representative for Congressman, Roger Williams walking us through that day on 911 at the White House with First Lady, Laura Bush. Gail Teegarden, President Burnet County Republican Women, January 13 th Carolyn Richmond, Von Brookshire and I spent the day at the capital watching the swearing in ceremony of our 84 th Congress and visiting with Marsha Farney's delightful staff. The following week, our new Governor, Lt. Governor and the Senate were sworn in during a memorable ceremony. With no time to lose, on February 7, Carolyn Richmond, Barbara Hoffman, Von Brookshire and I drove to Belton to attend the Region XI TRFW Leadership workshop. The workshops were led by excellent, motivational speakers, including our TFRW President, Jody Rushton. The following week our regular meeting brought us TFRW Vice-President Kim Chambers, who holds the Membership responsibility for our organization. With so much new information to act on, there was the next meeting with Star Republican Women's Club who featured former Burnet County Judge Donna Klaeger and Llano County Commissioner, Peter Jones. Then on Friday February 20 the Burnet County Republican Club brought us Steve Munisteri to deliver a state of the GOP in Texas and our nation. With so much information and happenings in the Republican Party, one can never say, I have nothing to do I hope all of you will want to get involved and find your special niche to work to continue the growth of the GOP and, also our club. Our board has agreed to help get those 500 new residents of Burnet County registered. Even though Burnet County is Red now, we want to reach all those who are moving to our county and let them know there is a place for them to get involved here. March 12 is our BCRW regular meeting and the BCRC is joining us to co-host our very own Congressman, Roger Williams who will give an update on Washington D.C. I do hope each of you will plan to attend and support his presence in Burnet County. 4 The 84th Legislative Session is off to a great start and our office has been busy meeting with various constituents and stakeholders to finalize our legislative agenda. In early February, the Speaker of the House sent out committee assignments. I am honored to have been assigned to serve on the State Affairs, Public Education, and House Administration committees. The State Affairs committee deals with a wide variety of statewide issues, including regulated industries like electricity, energy, telecom, and other utilities, as well as social issues like immigration and right to life. The State Affairs committee has not met yet, but will hold their meetings on Wednesdays. Public Education focuses on Texas' public schools, grades kindergarten through 12. I have been appointed to serve on a subcommittee tasked with reviewing legislation concerning teacher quality. The Public Education committee will also be looking at early childhood education, technology in schools, and school governance. The committee's first meeting was on Tuesday, February 17, where the Texas Education Agency was invited to give testimony on the state of education in Texas. Future committee meetings will take place on Tuesdays. The House Administration is a procedural committee tasked with overseeing the operation of the House of Representatives. Their jurisdiction includes the administration of the general House fund, House employees, House property, and the House rules. The House Administration committee meets on an as-needed basis. So far, I have filed seven bills and joint authored one. We are working to finalize several other bills and I expect that I will carry between pieces of legislation this session. March 13th is the deadline to file new legislation and any legislation filed after that date requires special permission for consideration from the House membership. The Governor gave his State of the State address on Tuesday, February 17th. In his address, he named five emergency items for the Legislature: border security, transportation, pre-k programs, higher education research, and ethics reform. The "emergency" designation signifies what Abbott considers to be his top priorities. These items can be considered immediately and do not need to wait for the 60-day rule to be acted upon. Best, David W. Glenn Legislative Director Representative Marsha Farney (512)
