1 Lone Star LEGACY Vol. 7, Issue 4 April 2010 From the President ates are important to all of D us birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, church and community events, business luncheons, store sales, vacations, etc. Often we get Save the Date notices to ensure that we don't miss an opportunity to be a part of something important. Well, here's your Save the Date notice for a couple of very important dates November 2, 2010 and November 6, 2012 Election Day. You may not need to be reminded of these dates or just how much work there is ahead of us but you might need to be reminded of WHAT A DIFFERENCE ONE VOTE MAKES! 1846: One vote decided on war with Mexico. In 1846, the Mexican army invaded Texas and President Polk asked for a Declaration of War. The Senate did not want to go to war, and the declaration passed by only one vote. The United States won the war against Mexico and with that victory added five states Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and California. 1876: One vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States. In the 1876 presidential election, Samuel Tilden received a half million more popular votes than Hayes. The Electoral College was not in agreement about who should be America's next leader. A special commission was formed to make the final decision. The commission decided that although Hayes had lost the actual vote by the citizens of the United States he had won the electoral vote by just one ballot: 185 to : One vote in each of the voting districts of California reelected President Wilson. If Wilson's opponent, Charles E. Hughes, had received an additional vote in each one of California's voting precincts he would have defeated Wilson. 1948: One vote per voting precinct gave Harry S. Truman the presidency. If Truman's opponent, Thomas E. Dewey, had received one vote more per precinct in Ohio and California there would have been a tie and the House of Representatives would have decided the election. And, because Dewey had more support in the House than Truman, Dewey would have won. 1960: One vote per voting precinct would have elected Richard Nixon rather than John F. Kennedy president. 2000: The election on November 7, 2000, was the closest presidential race in history. In the final count, Governor George W. Bush of Texas won by 4 electoral votes, but Vice President Al Gore had won the popular vote by 337,576 votes. Bush was the first presidential candidate in more than a century to win the presidency while losing the popular vote. The deciding factor in Bush winning the election was a victory in Florida by just 537 votes over Gore! 2004: The presidential election of November 2, 2004, was another close race! After results in 49 states were counted, President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts both needed Ohio's 20 electoral votes to reach 270 total and win the continued on page 2 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS April 5 April 15 BLRWW Board Meeting Luncheon Meeting at Fire Oak Grill, 114 Austin Avenue. * Bring your old cell phones to donate for our troops overseas to receive free phone cards. 2 2 Just for Fun Hospitality Join Us to Hear Parker County DA on April 15 arker County District Attorney Don Schnebly will Pjoin us for our April 15 monthly meeting to speak on current happenings in the county. Mr. Schnebly is a 1985 graduate of the University of Texas School of Law. He is married to Erna Noe Schnebly; they have one daughter, Hannah, a freshman at Tennessee State University. He served as the Assistant District Attorney of Parker County from 1986 to From the President continued from page 1 presidency. In the end, President Bush got 118,775 more votes in Ohio than Senator Kerry and took the state. Bush's share of the popular vote was just 2.5% more than Kerry's, which was the closest popular vote margin ever for a victorious sitting president. th 2008: The 56 quadrennial United States presidential election was held on November 4, Outgoing Republican President George W. Bush's policies and actions, and the American public's desire for change, were key issues throughout the campaign. During the presidential election campaign, the major-party candidates ran on a platform of change and reform in Washington. Domestic policy and the economy eventually emerged as the main themes in the last few months of the election campaign after the onset of the 2008 economic crisis. Democrat Barack Obama, then junior United States Senator from Illinois, defeated Republican John McCain, the senior United States Senator from Arizona. Nine states changed allegiance from the 2004 election. Each had voted for the Republican nominee in 2004 and contributed to Obama's sizable Electoral College victory. The selected electors from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia voted for President and Vice President of the United States on December 15, Those votes were tallied before a joint session of Congress on January 8, Obama received 365 electoral votes, and McCain 173. There were several unique aspects of the 2008 election. The election was the first in which an African American was elected President, and the first time a Roman Catholic was elected Vice President (Joe Biden, then-u.s. Senator from Delaware). It was also the first time two sitting senators ran against each other. The 2008 election was the first in 56 years in which neither an incumbent president nor a vice president ran Bush was constitutionally limited from seeking a third term by the Twenty-second Amendment; Vice President Dick Cheney chose not to seek the presidency. It was also the first time the Republican Party nominated a woman for Vice President (Sarah Palin, then-governor of Alaska). Additionally, it was the first election in which both major party candidates were born outside of the lower 48 states. Voter turnout for the 2008 election was the highest in at least 40 years. Stay informed, be involved, and remember your VOTE is important. th We look forward to seeing you on April 15 for another exciting and informative Bush Legacy luncheon at the Fire Oak Grill in downtown Weatherford. If you have any questions about our luncheons or membership in our Club, please visit our website at or call me at Our bylaws, newsletters, membership application, leadership, and other information is available online anytime!
