5 Tuesday, February 21, 2017 HOUSE JOURNAL 20th Day 383 On motion of Representative Minjarez, the names of all the members of the house were added to HRi47 as signers thereof. INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS The chair recognized Representative Murr who introduced family members of Master Sergeant Rodney Lee Buentello (Ret.) and representatives of Bandera County, speaking as follows: Members, the resolution you just heard spoke of retired Master Sergeant Rodney Buentello. He was a father, a son, a Marine, a friend, and a hero. I am joined today by Representative Minjarez, who is the state representative for the Buentello family. Just to summarize what you heard so that it s clear. On June 8, 2016, in Bandera, Texas, the Medina River was at 100ipercent capacity following a flood event just days before. It was brown and full of debris; it was churning. The Buentello family was visiting Bandera City Park where a dam is located across the Medina River. An unidentified teenage girl attempted to walk across the top of the dam in violation of city ordinance. She was swept over the dam and trapped and caught in the hydraulic undertow at the foot of the dam from the floodwaters. A teenage boy jumped in the water in an attempt to rescue her, and he, too, was succumbed to the hydraulic undertow and trapped. Retired Master Sergeant Buentello, without hesitation, went into the water. Struggling among the debris in this brown and dirty water, his actions saved the lives of those two teenagers. His actions were and are nothing but heroic. For his sons, Ryan and Roman, who have lost their parent, I give you this. When I was 13 years old, my father also died, trying to rescue a drowning man after jumping from a helicopter to reach him. It is a loss for which no words can properly describe. But I will remind you that we are made who we are by adversity and challenges, both big and small, that we face in our lives. Your father faced these under some of the most grueling and indescribable conditions in four tours of duty, and he succeeded. You, too, will face obstacles in life, and I know in my heart that you will find strength and patience and resolve and perseverance when you focus on your father and all that he accomplished. When you feel at your weakest, his spirit will be there to encourage, reassure, and guide you. Our prayers are with the Buentello family today. They are with us on the dais behind me: widow, Lisa; sons, Ryan and Roman; father, also a retired Marine, Raul; and mother, Yolanda. Also joining them are Mr.iJeff Jilson with the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District, who was integral in transferring information to my office, and Mr.iJohn Stith, the Bandera fire marshal and leader of the team of first responders that helped save the two teenagers. Representative Minjarez addressed the house, speaking as follows: I met Rodney Buentello when I was in my last election. I actually block walked his home, and we spoke at length about his dreams for his children and how he wanted to make the district and the world a better place for them. He is a

6 384 85th LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION solid example of heroism, and he gave himself always throughout his life. He gave himself to protect us as a member of the Marines. He gave himself to the students at his alma mater, John Jay, where he taught and coached track and football. And he gave of himself to save the lives of two teenagers. So I ask, members, that you continue to keep his family in y all s prayers. REMARKS ORDERED PRINTED Representative Leach moved to print remarks by Representative Murr and Representative Minjarez.
