The speaker recognized Representative Burkett who introduced Reverend Dretha Burris, associate pastor, First Rowlett United Methodist Church, Rowlett, who offered the invocation as follows: Holy and loving God, from the first session of the Texas Legislature in 1846 to this very day, this body of men and women who were elected by their constituents has been granted a great responsibility, great power over the lives of people, and great accountability not only to the citizens but also to you. God, we give you thanks for these who so willingly give of themselves in service to our citizens. They are called to govern in such a way that they do no harm, that they do all the good they can, and that the state is a better place because of their service. We pray that you empower them and equip them for this calling.

2 916 85th LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION Build up our representatives with wisdom, clarity, courage, strength, and a deep recognition of the trust they hold. We ask that you help them work together with a spirit of cooperation and a desire to understand views with which they may disagree. Help them to see as stewards of the laws of this great state that the people of Texas, all of them, are depending on each of them as individuals and as a collective body to approach the difficult issues with passion and compassion while protecting the vulnerable and seeking the greater good. Give them understanding that the decisions made, as well as the decisions that are not made, have long-lasting consequences on the lives of people whose faces they cannot see and whose names they may never know. Gracious God, we pray for each member of the house, as a body and also as individuals. We pray that you bless them. We pray that you bless their relationships with family and friends. Give them the stamina required to meet their many responsibilities. Give them good health. Give them rest when needed. Give them joy. Give them a sense of your presence and of our gratitude. We ask these things in Jesus name. Amen. The speaker recognized Representative Murphy who led the house in the pledges of allegiance to the United States and Texas flags. The motion prevailed. The following resolutions were laid before the house: HRi965 (by Flynn), Recognizing Marchi27-31, 2017, as Texas Retired Teachers Week.
