1 ASUN Senate Meeting Minutes February 10 th, 2016 A regular meeting of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska (ASUN) was held on Wednesday February 10 th, 2016 in the Colonial room of the City Campus Union. The meeting convened at 6:34pm and the regular chairman, Vice President Waltjer, was presiding. The previous meeting s minutes were distributed and no amendments were made. All Senators were present except: Bartels, Broderson, M. Linblad, Oetken, Sheehan, Weak Appointments Senator Wimmer and Senator McGuigan-Sporkan were sworn into their office as senators for their respective colleges. Open Forum Senator Correas motioned to limit speaking on behalf of Senate Resolution #12 to thirty minutes, 15 minutes in support and 15 minutes in opposition. The motion was seconded and passed. Dr. John Bender, Prof. College of Journalism & Mass Commun. and Faculty Senate President The faculty senate voted on a resolution similar to Senate Resolution #12. We feel that guns would interfere with the quality of education. Chief Owen Yardley UNL Police and Assistant Vice Chancellor UNL has not supported guns on campus. Law Enforcement trains every year to protect the students on this campus. State Senator Adam Morfeld State Senator Morfeld spoke in support of the resolution. Rodney Moeller, President of the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association Moeller spoke in opposition to the resolution because he supports the underlying bill that will be voted on in the state legislature. State Senator Tommy Garrett State Senator Garrett spoke in opposition to the resolution. LB769 eliminates the gun free zones but allows institutions to dictate whether they want a gun free zone. Senator Correas moved to set aside the orders of the day to move to new business, Senate Resolution #12. Unfinished Business Government Bill #22 - CDI Diversity Statement and Plan of Action for Acad. Year President Chau yielded to Senator Nasrati who introduced the bill. Questions took place. No discussion took place. Senator Walker moved to pass by acclamation. New Business Government Bill #23 Continuation of $38 East Campus Student Union Fee President Chau introduced the bill. No questions took place. Discussion took place. Senator Sam Lindblad called to question. The bill passed unanimously. Government Bill #24 - Diversity & Inclusion Video Creation Senator Nasrati introduced the bill. Questions took place. Speaker Hartman proposed to add an amendment to line 14 to add after the approval of the video by the ASUN senate body. It was seconded and the amendment passed. The main motion passed by acclamation. Government Bill #25 Diversity & Inclusion Information Booth Senator Nasrati introduced the bill. Questions and discussion took place. The bill passed. Senate Resolution #12 Weapons on Campus Senator Himes called for a roll call vote. Senator Correas introduced the resolution. Correas yielded to Senator Fillman who gave the initial opening statement. Questions took place. GLC Chair Devine proposed an amendment in line 21 to say ASUN recommends the President to direct the Government Liaison Committee to lobby on behalf of the students at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln against LB769. Senator Correas moved to pass by acclamation, and the amendment passed. Speaker Hartman called to question the resolution. A roll call vote took place.
