1 38 th Student Senate 1 st Session Minutes for November 30 th, 2017 I. Call to Order- 4:34pm II. Roll Call III. Approval of the Journal a. Approved IV. Approval of the Agenda a. Approved V. Officers Reports a. Speaker Caitlin Lively i. Patriots In Action week is going well. Facts and Flowers is on Friday, so please come out. This upcoming week is the last week for outreach and office hours. b. Speaker Pro Tempore Brendan Sullivan i. Please complete office and outreach hours by tomorrow. Patriots in Action week is going well. c. Clerk Eric Nielsen i. No Report VI. Committee Reports a. Administrative and Financial Affairs Rebekah Pettine i. There is an appointment coming through today in Senate. b. University Services Zhiwei Lei i. Monday was the Bike event, and it went well. c. Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Rujohn Shali i. Chilli Cause It s Chilly is next week, so if you know of any RSOs that are interested. then please let me know and sign them up. If you want to be the Diversity and Multicultural Affairs committee next semester, let me know. d. University Life Nicholas Fisch i. Patriots in Action week is going really well. Facts and Flowers is tomorrow from 1-2pm and Destress Fest next week, so please sign up for that, as everyone must complete a mandatory one hour. Senator Olivier has the Title IX coordinator on Wednesday, December 6th. We are passing out Gold Rush shirts next week, so please help with that. e. Government and Community Relations Davide Genoese-Zerbi i. Committee members are not excused from committee because of the Chili event. December 5 th at 6:45pm is the city council dinner. Please come. Please fill out the Mason Lobbies interest form. The Arlington Wreath Laying Ceremony is being planned for next semester.
2 VII. VIII. f. University Academics Clement Lupton IV i. In committee, we continued planning for events for next semester. We have professors interested in our Flash Lectures. The Scantron initiative should be in reading today. g. Senate Military Liaison Jeremy Aylward i. Race Across America is December 16 th. h. Faculty Senate Liaison Ezra Zike i. Absent i. Public Relations Liaison Allison Cromich i. Thank you for sharing Patriots in Action graphics. We are confirming a new secretary. Public Session a. Executive Report i. President David Kanos 1. The Indigenous People s Day has not been signed off by the Faculty Senate and they want to call it Fall Break instead but we are looking for other ways to get it through. January 27 th is the Student Government retreat, but that date is tentative. Patriots in Action is this week, De-Stress is next week, please show up for that. We are in the works of confirming a new secretary of Public Relations. b. Student Involvement Advisor(s) i. No report c. Mason Life Representative(s) i. Madison Essig 1. There is a Best Buddies event today at Tropical Smoothie and it ends at 7pm today. The Mason Life exhibition is on December 8 th. d. Other Members of the University Administration i. None e. Gallery Members i. Katlyn Weiser- Promotion for VA21. Information will be sent out to Secretary Bates, so contact her if you want more information. VA21 has its own lobbying day about a week after Mason Lobbies, so if you re interested, please reach out to me. ii. Matt Owens- Promotion and information about the Jeffersonian Dinner through Roosevelt on December 2nd in Dewberry from 8pm to 10pm. Appointment of Joseph Fernando a. Joseph Fernando i. Opening Statement- Introduction. Explanation of qualifications. 1. Questionsa. Shali- If Virginia Tech and George Mason had a basketball game who would you support? i. Fernando- George Mason University.
3 IX. ii. Committee Report- Pettine- Candidate passed in committee with one abstention. iii. Discussion and Debate- 1. None iv. Confirmed Old Business a. Bill #15- A Bill to Allocate Funds for Destress Fest i. Committee Report- Pettine- There was an emergency administrative meeting for this, in which passed unanimously. ii. Author s Report- Fisch- Explanation as to what the event is and the costs. Amendment to cross out the fidget spinner as Student Government already have them. However, I want to ask Chairwoman Shali s opinion because she wanted to allocate some money for Chilli Cause It s Chilly. 1. Aylward- How much do scantrons cost? (Fisch-I don t know) 2. Fisch- Motion to strike Point 4 and add a point stating to allocate $50 towards printing services [seconded] for printing out puzzles and little games. a. Discussion and Debatei. none iii. Discussion and Debate 1. Shali- Motion to combine Points 5 and 6 [seconded] so there s $150 allocated. a. Discussion and Debatei. Glesing- Will that leave you enough money? [Shali- yes] ii. Sullivan- What are the items in question? [Shalithat is up to the winners] iii. Abel- Where would the other $150 from the fidget spinners go? [caiti- Student Government budget] iv. Shali- Move the previous question [seconded] 2. Fisch- Motion to increase the amount of money allocated to scantrons [seconded] because these will be passed out during events. a. Discussion and debatei. Mahmoud- How many Scantrons do you think will be needed? [Fisch- 230] ii. Nielsen- I think this is unnecessary because we re already buying 10,000 next week.

Sullivan- Can the Chairman of University Academics clarify the 10,000 Scantrons Initiative [Lupton- The Scantrons would come in on the 12 th and would be distributed to students in the Office of Student Involvement] and is the initiative related to De-Stress Fest [Lupton-no]? iv. Fisch- The 10,000 Scantrons Initiative is coming later so we need scantrons for De-Stress Fest, which is next week. v. Genoese-Zerbi- 230 Scantrons is enough, I move the previous question. 3. Glesing- Why is it $150 for the chips and cookies? [Fisch- We cannot reserve the space without having food there so that s why.] 4. Genoese-Zerbi- I move the previous question. iv. Passed X. New Business a. Resolution #14- A Resolution to Support the Scantrons For All Initiative i. Referred to the University Academics committee. b. Resolution #15- A Resolution to Support Wreaths Across America i. Referred to the Government and Community Relations committee. c. Resolution #16- A Resolution to Support Mason Lobbies 2018 i. Referred to the Government and Community Relations committee. d. Resolution #17- A Resolution to Support Suicide Prevention and Intervention i. Referred to the University Life committee. e. Resolution #18- A Resolution to Impeach the Student Body President of George Mason University i. Referred to Administrative and Financial Affairs committee. f. Bill #16- A Bill to Allocate Funds for the Scantrons for All Initiatives i. Referred to Administrative and Financial Affairs committee. XI. Announcements/ Points of Privilege a. Next Meeting Thursday, December 7 th, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. in Merten Hall, Room 1201 b. Shali- Vietnamese Student Association is having an event at 7pm tonight, there are more events with De-Stress Fest. c. Bates- There is a Pajama Shabbat tomorrow night. d. Genoese-Zerbi- Robert s Rules- Direct all questions to the Speaker of the Senate. All co-sponsors and sponsors of legislation need to have their names on the legislation and a committee cannot sponsor legislation. e. Abdelmaguid- Water is not wet. f. Olivier- Title IX is coming next Wednesday at 4:30pm in the Office of Student Involvement.
