Introduction Every year, Canadian Environment Week takes place during the first week of June to coincide with World Environment Day as well as Clean Air Day. This year, Canadian Environment Week was celebrated from June 5 to 11. Canadian Environment Week is celebrated at the Parliamentary Precinct with a week-long series of events organized by Partners for a Green Hill. These activities are meant to encourage and celebrate actions that make our natural environment and our workplaces more ecologically friendly. The pages that follow describe the 2011 Canadian Environment Week activities that occurred at the Parliamentary Precinct. Approved by the Steering Committee on September 12,
Travel Battle The Partners for a Green Hill Travel Battle is a program that encourages Hill employees to walk, cycle, carpool or take public transit to work. This year, the challenge involved a friendly competition between our partner institutions: the Senate, the House of Commons, the Library of Parliament, and Public Works and Government Services Canada - Parliamentary Precinct Branch. The Travel Battle was held from June 6 to 10, During the week, a representative from each institution recorded their employees commuting activities in a database. Participants saved over 4,226 kg of CO 2 emissions during Environment Week This adds up to 23,819 km and over 933 litres in gas savings. The results for each institution are listed below. Employees Registered Participation Rate Senate % House of Commons % Library of Parliament % PWGSC-PPB % CO 2 Emission Savings (kg) Distance Savings (km) Total Gas Saved (litres) Senate 1, , House of Commons , Library of Parliament 1, , PWGSC-PPB 1, , PGH Total 4, , Approved by the Steering Committee on September 12,
As a reward for participating in the Travel Battle, one person from each institution was randomly selected to win a participation prize. The winners are listed below. 7 Clean Air Day Clean Air Day takes place every Wednesday of Environment Week to celebrate environmentally friendly activities that promote clean air and good health across Canada. On June 8, 2011, fourteen teams met at the Centennial Flame at 11:30 a.m. to participate in a scavenger hunt organized by Partners for a Green Hill. A Partners for a Green Hill t-shirt was handed out to each participant. Each of the winning team members received a Partners for a Green Hill gift bag, which included a flying disc, lip balm, a water bottle, a pedometer, a pen, a gator clip, oneside-use notepads, a sweet treat, and compact fluorescent light bulbs (picture on the right). Along with the quiz question, employees received information on the Partners for a Green Hill Environment Week activity of the day. Example of a quiz question: What is the scientific name for the well-known sugar maple tree? Answer: Acer saccharum For each quiz question that was answered correctly, the participant s name was entered in a draw. There was a participation prize for each institution. The results are listed below. 12 Environmental Awards Ceremony Every year during Environment Week, Partners for a Green Hill recognizes the contributions of employees who work to make the Parliamentary Precinct a more ecologically friendly place to work and visit. Thirteen nominations were received this year. Winners were chosen by a selection committee of representatives from each of the four partner institutions. The 2011 Selection Committee consisted of Robert Huneault, Senate; Julie Sabourin, House of Commons; Daniele Lafrance, Library of Parliament; and Karine Lacroix, PWGSC-PPB. This year s ceremony took place on Friday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m., in Centre Block, Room 256-S. Senators, members of Parliament and employees of the Senate, the House of Commons, the Library of Parliament and the Parliamentary Precinct Branch of Public Works and Government Services Canada were eligible for nomination. The award program had three categories: individual awards, team awards, and the partnership award. The Masters of Ceremonies were Daniele Lafrance of the Library of Parliament and Karine Lacroix of PWGSC-PPB. The 2011 award recipients were: Partnership Award House of Commons and PWGSC-PPB for their collaboration on the Don Reid humidification project Richard Bourassa, House of Commons; Sylvie-Andrée Leblanc, House of Commons; and Michel Sabourin, PWGSC-PPB Institutional Awards Individual Senate Annette Amyot House of Commons Tim Healy Library of Parliament Ze ev Schneider Approved by the Steering Committee on September 12,

Conclusion and recommendations for Environment Week 2012 Communications The number of communiqués sent out was appropriate. Look into developing a communications plan with the House of Commons Communications team and promote the new Partners for a Green Hill website. Travel Battle On the Partners for a Green Hill website, provide more detail about the information required to register (e.g., # of km travelled; method of travel; # of passenger, if carpooling). Register Travel Battle participants at the Scavenger Hunt and the Enviro Fair again next year. Scavenger Hunt The Scavenger Hunt was well attended. Participants noted that they would prefer if the Scavenger Hunt were made shorter. The heat made it difficult for teams to complete the event. If the format remains the same next year, the recommendation is to reduce the number of puzzles from four to two. Another format to consider for next year is the idea of an Enviro Amazing Race. A different leg of the race could be played over lunch every day of week. This would allow more employees to play, and the heat would play less of a role since each leg would be shorter. Awards Ceremony Start the Awards Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. again next year. Ensure that all institutions advise their nominees and winners in advance. Ensure that all institutions follow up with the winners to confirm their presence. In the Award Ceremony invitations, invite everyone earlier so that they can mingle and visit the kiosks before the ceremony. Review the template for the plaques awarded to the winners. Enviro Fair Invite individuals who are working at the kiosks on a tour of Centre Block from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. as a thank you. Start the Enviro Fair at 10:00 a.m. instead of 9:00 a.m. Approved by the Steering Committee on September 12,
There was a good variety of exhibitors. Keep the same set-up for next year. Look into the possibility of reserving a larger room. thank-you letters with pictures to exhibitors again next year. Approved by the Steering Committee on September 12,
