1 FR: MICHAEL OSCAR DT: 12/3/18 RE: 2018 Federal Election Results 2018 Federal Election Results Following the 2016 Federal Elections, the Republican Party controlled the White House and the U.S. Congress for the first time since A total of 469 seats in the U.S. Congress (34 Senate seats and all 435 House seats) were up for election on November 6, 2018 and this election cycle included a record number of retirements in the U.S. House (26 Republicans and 8 Democrats), along with a record number of women on the ballot. Ultimately, the Democrats took back the House by a decisive margin, while the Republicans improved their standing in the Senate, in a midterm election that, despite its significance, exposed the limitations of both parties for In the House, 414/435 seats declared with the Democrats claiming 220 seats to Republicans 193 seats, the Democrats gained 27 seats with Republicans losing 27 seats. In the Senate, 97/100 seats declared, 46 Democrats claimed seats and the Republicans claimed 50 seats. Votes are still being tallied in several states including in Arizona, Georgia, and it appears that the Mississippi Senate race is headed into a runoff election. Early voting by young adults was up 188 percent compared to The diploma divide is widening: 61 percent of non-college-educated white voters cast their ballots for Republicans, compared to 45 percent of college-educated whites. An unprecedented number of women will enter Congress come January, over 80 of them Democrats. Republican Marsha Blackburn made history as Tennessee s first female Senator. Democratic Senators Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, and Joe Donnelly of Indiana were defeated by conservative challengers, who leaned heavily on President Donald Trump s enduring popularity in their deeply red states. In Texas and Tennessee, neither the insurgent energy behind Beto O Rourke nor the middle-of-the-road appeal of former Governor Phil Bredesen could overcome the Republican lean of the electorate. Finally, now that Democrats have won the House, Republicans will no longer be able to pass legislation with GOP votes alone and to get any bills through Congress, President Trump will have to spar with Democrats. The new Democratic majority will also have subpoena power, which will help them investigate the Trump administration far more aggressively, but since Democrats did not take the Senate, they did not gain the power to block President Trump s Supreme Court, Cabinet, and other nominees for the next two years; thereby, President Trump will continue to have the upper hand in confirming judges to lifetime posts. This election outcome will not likely lead to a lot of deal-making in the new Congress next year, though both House Democrats and Senate Republicans will need to point to accomplishments when their majorities will be up for grabs in 2020.
