The purpose of this meeting is to be the direct representation of Cabrillo College s Student Body. We will see to it that the student s best interests are being served and that the students are given the opportunity to be heard. And to replace Special Items VI: C under New Business VII: E Natasha moves to approve the amended agenda for November 8, Darwin seconds the motion. 17 yeas, Unanimous pass III. Approval of the Minutes 3 minutes A. November 1, 2012 *Page 2, the correct verbiage used in the Cafeteria remodel item must be identical in the notable motions table. The account name is not necessary for the notable motion table. *Carter moves to amend the minutes to reflect the correct account name used in item one (1) seconded by Devin. Unanimous pass *Devin moves to approve the November 1 minutes Abby seconds the motion. Unanimous pass IV. Public Comments This time is reserved for members of the public to address the Senate on issues not already appearing on the agenda. There will be a limit of five (5) minutes per speaker. Marylyn came to ask the senate to be more involved with informing the public about the harmful affects of tower/cellular/micro radiation poisoning. November 16 th there will be a meeting with the zoning committee to discuss and request removal of microwave radiation from Cabrillo s campus. For more information, please visit V. President Announcements 5 Minutes Next week s meeting will be held under strict time restraints. There will be a limit of two (2) items on the agenda. From 3:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. will be the official meeting. At 4:00 p.m. the student senate will then move to the Senson House to support Darwin Constantino. 1
2 VI. Special Items A. Engineering Study Abroad Info. / Action D. Constantino 28 Minute This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding the approval of $15, from the Programs Account to help fund the engineering department wishing to have several of their students study abroad. Diane, from the Cabrillo Engineering department, presented a proposal for opening a study abroad program and why this idea is worth the funding. Engineers build and design anything not natural. Twelve to fifteen percent of all transfer students are engineering majors with five percent (5%) of those students transferring to private engineering universities. It would behoove the school to recognize the importance of offering more resources to these students than otherwise would not find in a small town environment. This program would enable the environment to students by introducing them to energy usage and systems more diverse than their familiar with. Darwin moves to extend time by five (5) minutes. Natasha seconds the motion. 16 yeas unanimous The vision is that the first destination would be to a Spanish speaking country for two (2) weeks in January There would be an application process offered to the students concentrating in engineering. At least two (2) prerequisites courses must have been taken to be able to apply to study abroad. Initially the funding will be established through endowments and donations. The amount being requested covers the minimum amount needed for starting an endowment. There are plans for future fundraising. Darwin moves to extend time by three (3) minutes Abby seconds the motion. 13 yeas 2 nays 1 abstain This is a large amount of money and until there is further discussion amongst the senate, this item will have to be brought back to the agenda. B. Social Justice Conference Info. / Discuss. N. Assaffat 25 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding the Social Justice Conference and how the Student Senate can help make it a success. Nadine moves to strike this item from the agenda. C. M.L.K. Event and Scholarship Info. / Discuss. N. Assaffat 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration and the M.L.K. Scholarship. This item has been stricken from Special items, VI: C and placed into New Business, item VII: E. VII. New Business. A. Appointment of a New Senator 3 Minutes for speech, 3 minutes for questions 1. Scotts Valley Representative B. Helping a Friend in Distress Info. / Action T. Desandres 5 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding if the Student Senate wishes to partake in the Helping a Friend in Distress Online Program by having a workshop Diane from student health services would be organizing this workshop and design with student leaders in mind. It is suggested that the workshop could take place during the student senate meeting. Some senators believed that this knowledge would be beneficial in the long run. Others preferred not to carry that much responsibility. Tana moves to have the student senate partake in the online workshop designed to help a friend in distress. Darwin seconds the motion. 9 yeas 7 nays, passed. C. SAC Challenge Incentives Info. / Discuss. A. Cornett 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding the SAC Challenge Aimee and Tana resented the board with a skit that explained the SAC. card. Students are able to receive discount from local merchants that are contracted with Cabrillo College. The incentive is for the student whom collects the most contracts will be awarded with an undisclosed prize. This incentive is open to all students, forms may be printed from the Cabrillo web site or pick up a form from the senators office. This offer expires December 5 th. D. Second Harvest, Pig Race Info. / Discuss. S. O Connor 5 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding the Second Harvest Pig Race For every dollar collected a family of four (4) will eat. Canned food is welcomed. Please turn the piggy banks over to Sharon or Tana when they are full or by the deadline. E. M.L.K. Event and Scholarship Info. / Discuss. N. Assaffat 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration and the M.L.K. Scholarship This application is open to all Cabrillo College students and will be available for submission until December 19, The stations open to receive the completed applications will be located in the SAC East building, room 216, Aptos Campus and Watsonville Center, room A140. In theory, there are four (4) major benefits from using the video conferencing software. 1. It would create the environment for open forum. 2. Senators become familiar with their constituencies and other senators with face-to-face interaction. 3. Provides an outlet for campus resources and four: to better, serve our continuance. I. Prezi Presentation Info. / Discuss. B. Buckter 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion regarding a short presentation on Prezi (a zooming power point-like, software). It is an innovative new way at making presentation. This is an ipad application, a sandbox worth of ideas and organization tools, compatible with Windows and Mac. With an edu account, there are benefits and incentives. This software was used for TEDtalks events and by W.I.R.E. magazine. The equipment is available through Cabrillo s tech supplier, Sysco. VIII. Committee Reports three minutes ea. Abby: CBC meeting was last Thursday. Discussion of prop 30 and now that the challenge of passing is over, we are still far from finished. Capital City is still smoothing out details. There will be more information to come. More students = more financial support for the school. November 28 th at 2:00 p.m. CBC meeting Sac East Building. Tana: Second Harvest has begun collecting donations with food-bins available in various locations on campus and Cabrillo s Student Senate Piggy Bank Run. One dollar feeds a family of four, please spare the change. Carter: Tech committee will meet Thursday at 3:00 p.m. IX. Reports (Every other name is Bold for Easy Reading) two minutes ea. Whenever in doubt ask, if no one is around do not buy it. This will be taken to the bylaws committee to be amended and added to the bylaws. C. Discussion of Senate 5 Minutes An advisor absolutely, must approve any RFF before any promises of funds are to be paid for a service/merchant.
