1 President s Corner September 2016 When an elephant talks, everyone listens! What a wonderful turnout we had for Dr. Joe Heck. I was very impressed hearing him tell us what he believes will work and what won t work to get our country back on track. I am sure many of you read the article that was in the Record Courier and I fully agree with his sentiments regarding the election. Whatever you feel about Trump, he isn t as scary as Hillary!! We all need to pull together, work on getting Republican s registered and then work to get all Republicans to the polls. We were very lucky to also get Kathy Lewis, our Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer, to tell us a bit about the process and requirements to be able to register voters. We are in for quite a ride from now till the election. On August 20 th there is the 2 nd Annual Basque Fry at the Corley Ranch. It should be very exciting and they have great speakers. On August23rd there is Women of Douglas Volunteer Night in Douglas County at the Republican s Headquarters in Minden/Gardnerville. Ken Minster, Outreach Director for Dr. Joe Heck, will be helping us all learn the new tech for calling. From what I understand, we don t have to make cold calls in person!! They will also be bringing refreshments and the plan is to have a great time while being productive. I have just received the Official Call for the 2016 Fall General Membership and Board of Directors Meeting of the NvFRW. It will be Sept. 30 th Oct.1 st, 2016 at the Atlantis Hotel Casino in Reno. I hope everyone can attend, especially the new members who have never been to one before. It is a great opportunity to see how the NvFRW works and how each club fits in. You will be receiving the registration forms and info shortly if you haven t already. Our 9/11 dinner is Sept. 11, 2016 at CVI. You have all received the invitation flyer and I hope you can come and bring family and friends. Our guest speaker, Bert Upson, who was in the South Tower when it was hit, is our speaker. This is a yearly event our club has had since the tragic event happened. It is a good time to share memories and remember why we need to come together and never forget. We will not have a lunch meeting in September so the next time business will be discussed will be October. I was thrilled we had a quorum for our August meeting and we were able to pass our Bylaw Revisions. We also voted to accept the Nominating Committee presented by Donna Schehl, the Chairperson. A big thank you to all who volunteered, and a special thank you to Donna who took on the chairmanship of both. Please remember to send your RSVP for the 9/11 dinner to Jacie. This is a sit down dinner and we can t take any walk-ins. Along with your check (or you can charge it) Jacie needs to know your dinner choice. Please make the effort to come. I think you will be glad you did.

3 SIERRA NEVADA REPUBLICAN WOMEN AUGUST 10, 2016 MEETING MINUTES The regularly scheduled meeting of the Sierra Nevada Republican Women was called to order at 12:00 noon at the Carson Valley Inn. The invocation was given by Jan Muzzy and the flag salute was led by Carol del Carlo. The parliamentarian for the meeting was Kathryn Zogorski. Several guests were introduced. There was a warm welcome for Dr. Joe Heck and Ken Minster. 1 st VP/Program Barbara McRoberts introduced Dr., General, Congressman Heck. The Congressman spoke about the many committees he is on. We definitely need to make a change and it starts with getting Donald Trump elected as well as more republicans in Congress. Congressman Heck believes that sanctuary cities should be defunded from federal funds. On the topic of immigration, he says that the laws on the books need to be upgraded. New laws are needed for mandatory e-verify for guest worker programs. He also stressed that for every student to succeed in education we need to increase career technical funds. He does not change his answers by the groups he speaks to. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as written. Jacie Peters gave the treasurer s report and it is on file. Marlene Reinecke won the sustainability drawing of $81.00 and Lynn Muzzy won the free lunch for making reservations early. Dave Nelson was the winner of a gift bag donated by Gloria Darlington. The CVI is now asking for all lunch reservations to be made to Jacie by the Friday before our meeting. 2 nd VP/Membership Bonnie Robinson reported that we have 69 members and 39 associates. VP/Programs Barbara gave us information on the 9/11 dinner to be on September 11 th at the CVI. Our speaker will be Bert Upson, a survivor of the south tower on 9/11. Deadline for reservations is September 5 th. Caring for America Chair Sally Wiley reports that she sent off 33 boxes with $ for postage to the troops overseas on August 5 th. Year to date 89 boxes have been sent with $1, postage. The nominating committee chair Donna Schehl announced her committee: Nancy Jarvis, Jan Muzzy, Jerri Bolinger, Kathryn Zogorski. Birgit made a motion to accept the committee. It was seconded and accepted. The slate of officers will be presented to the club for a vote. The proposed revisions for the Bylaws were sent to everyone and the changes for clarity are to be voted on. Kathryn Zogorski moved that the total Bylaw Revisions, including the suggested changes noted, be considered as a whole rather than by seriatim, which means paragraph by paragraph. The motion was seconded by Bonnie Robinson. Motion passed. Donna Schehl moved that the Bylaw Revisions as transmitted and updated by accepted. Motion was passed. Scholarship applicants for the Jo Marshall Scholarship are still being accepted. If you know anyone who is eligible, give Jacie a call. The NvFRW Fall Board Meeting will be September 30 through October 1, 2016 at the Atlantis Hotel and Casino in Reno. Announcements: The DCRW will be having a Flapper Party at the CVIC hall on September 10 th. Anyone willing to register voters should attend a training class led by the Clerk s office. Kathy Lewis, our Douglas Co. Clerk spoke to the club about getting more involved registering voters and getting the voters out to vote. The meeting was adjourned at 1:08 pm. Respectfully submitted, Jerri Bolinger, Recording Secretary Page 3

6 Recommended Reading Constitution Committee Our presidential and vice presidential debates are approaching. You may be listening to them with a voter not yet convinced of the grave mistake it would be to vote for the Clinton-Kaine ticket, but who is open to considering issues thoughtfully. To present the candidates issue positions Clinton & Kaine vs. Trump & Pence On The Issues, by Jesse Gordon, published August 2016, is recommended. Gordon s book provides a side-by-side comparison of the candidates actual stances based upon sources identified by the author including their memoirs, previous debates, speeches and campaign websites. It is not a synthesis of mass media opinions. Jesse Gordon is the editor-in-chief of OnTheissues.org. Below is a list of the candidates positions on economic and social issues extracted from this website.
