1 June Issue 2015 President s Corner Change is here!! Our meetings will be moving to Carson Valley Inn starting June 10 th. Tahoe Ridge has been very good to us the last few years but they can t continue hosting our meetings. Costs are going up and our meals there haven t. They are shifting their focus with the new restaurant in Carson City and they have many new events at the Bistro. We wish them well and hope our new venue will be as accommodating. Please come to our meeting June 10 th at CVI, downstairs in the Douglas/Sierra Room. Doors will be open at 11:00am and you will be able to get your meal starting at 11:30am. The cost is going up a little but I hope you won t find it too painful. Along with a nice buffet, we will have our program and meeting and a good sound system with a view of the speaker!! We are starting a new policy also due to a problem we had with reservations not matching our actual reservation count. When we give the number of reservations to the restaurant we have to pay for that amount whether the person shows up or not. Our club wants to give as much as possible to the republican candidates when elections come around so we can t afford to cover lunches when people don t show. The cost will be $20 with a reservation and $25 without. If you do need to cancel please do it within 72 hrs before the meeting. This would be greatly appreciated! Our treasurer, Jacie Peters will be taking reservations on her at jaciepeters@gmail.com or call her at We will be advertising these changes in our newsletter, on our website and in the Record Courier. Nancy Jarvis will notify the members who don t have . We will do our best to spread the word but feel free to tell everyone you know. For those who weren t at our May meeting, we are doing a membership drive in June. Please bring a friend, neighbor, relative or someone you met in your daily journeys!! If your guest joins you both will receive a nice little gift. I think our meetings have been wonderful. In May, Bobbie Thompson, the Minden Airport Manager, told us all about the Wings of Freedom Tour at the airport June 1st & 2 nd and the Aviation Roundup, August 22 nd & 23 rd. I can t wait to see them both. She is a fabulous speaker and was able to answer any question that was asked of her. Many members told me they could have listened to her a lot longer!! June 10 th, we are very fortunate to have both Senator James Settelmeyer and Assemblyman Jim Wheeler as our speakers. They are going to fill us in on the happenings at the legislature. Let us all make a wish that the legislature doesn t go into overtime!!! Both gentlemen have always been very supportive of our club and most of you know them from our meetings or events. Please come and join us. You can check out the new venue and hear the latest news from the Capital. Thank you, Pat Smith

3 SIERRA NEVADA REPUBLICAN WOMEN May 13, 2015 Minutes The regularly scheduled meeting of the Sierra Nevada Republican Women was held on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Tahoe Ridge Winery and Bistro in Minden, NV. President Pat Smith called the meeting to order at 12:00 noon. The invocation was given by President Pat followed by the Salute to our U.S. flag led by Donna Schehl, a veteran. Special guests were introduced and new members acknowledged. Lynn Muzzy, Douglas County Central Committee Vice - Chair, handed out postcards addressed to Senator Ford, Senator Roberson, Senator Kieckhefer, and Governor Sandoval advocating parental notification for abortion of those under 18 AB 405. We were asked to sign them, put our return address on them and put them in a basket. Program: 1 st Vice President/Program Barbara McRoberts introduced our speaker, Bobbie Thompson, Minden Airport Manager. She told us of the Wings of Freedom Tour, a group of WW II planes: P-51, B-17, and B-24. It will take place June 1 from 12:00-5:00 pm, June 2 from 9:00 am-5:00 pm, and June 3 from 9:00 am-12:00 pm. The aviation roundup will be August at the Minden Airport. Bobbie gave a great overview of what is happening at the airport. Our speakers for June will be Senator James Settelmeyer and Assemblyman Jim Wheeler. Minutes: The minutes from April were approved. Treasurer: Jacie Peters gave her report. Membership: 2 nd Vice President/Membership Nancy Brisack reported we have members. We are having a special membership program in June. Members are encouraged to bring a guest and they both would receive a gift if the guest joins SNRW. Military update: Sally Wiley reported that 24 packages were mail on April 29 th. June 19 will be an Honor Flight for a Viet nam Veteran. Sally asked that letters or postcards be addressed to Dear Honored Veteran to be distributed when the flight returns to Reno. The hat was passed and $190. was collected. Other Business: The board spent time going over the Achievement Award requirements and our club is up to date with most of the required items. President Pat explained the Award including a membership drive. She also spent time to make sure that our members know the difference between Republican and Democrats. One difference is that the democrats have a hand out and the republicans give a hand up. A brochure provided by the Douglas County Central Committee was passed to everyone who wanted one. The NvFRW Nominating Committee Chair represents our club at Convention. Announcements: Our long time member, Janet Asmann, had a cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital. Her husband removed her from life support this morning. Sustainability Drawing: Doreen Challis won the drawing and donated the money to the Honor Flight. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 pm. Respectfully submitted, Jerri Bolinger, Recording Secretary

4 RECOMMENDED READING The Constitution Committee For several reasons the Constitution Committee recommends that you take a look at Tom Brokaw s The Greatest Generation. The first reason is that Larry Vaughn, a member of this World War II generation who lives right here in Douglas County, has taken an Honor Flight. We extend our gratitude to him for his service. We also thank our own Sally Wiley for the work she undertook to make that flight happen. The Greatest Generation is good reading. Tom Brokaw interviewed a number of individuals who served our nation when western civilization was being seriously challenged. Some were famous persons whom we might not have expected to have stepped up to meet the challenge; Julia Childs and Art Buchwald for example. Others were well-known heroes such as Senators Robert Dole and Daniel Inouye. Most of those interviewed by the author were the ordinary folks. After surviving the depression and then sacrificing their lives during the war they came home to... help convert a wartime economy into the most powerful peacetime economy in history. The stories of a generation that gave much and asked for little have pertinence now because our civilization again is facing a serious challenge. The inspirational stories remind us of what we are capable of doing and must do in order to meet this challenge. The Greatest Generation, Random House, 1998, can be checked out at our Republican Headquarters, 1507 Hwy 395 N, Suite B, Gardnerville, and that is the final reason for our recommendation. Stop in. Headquarters is open on Tuesdays from 9:00 A.M. to 1 P.M., on Thursdays from 2 P.M. to 6 P.M. and on Saturdays from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. There are lots of other good books from which you can make a selection. Contact Lynn Muzzy to sign up to staff HQ for a 2-hour stint, and you will have plenty of time to look at the books and check one out. Then you can recommend a reading and we will pass it along. The SNRW Executive Board meets on Tuesday, the week before the regular SNRW luncheon meeting, at 1:00 p.m. at different board member s homes.. All members are invited to attend. Be sure to call or to RSVP and find out where the meeting will be. Call or President Pat Smith at or nvsmith1385@aol.com.

5 The Vietnam Honor Flight will be leaving for DC on June 19th and returning to the Reno Airport on June 21st (no time as yet). Please make plans to attend their arrival on June 21st mark your calendar! Letters/Notes to the Veterans should be addressed to Dear Honored Veteran, as the list does change quite a bit right up to the day or two before the flight. The Veterans love receiving the letters/notes during Mail Call. Please bring your correspondence to the June 10th meeting an I will mail them all to Honor Flight Nevada. If you wish to mail your own correspondence, please send it to Honor Flight Nevada, P.O , Reno, NV and put on the correspondence that you are from Sierra Nevada Republican Women. Honor Flight thanks you. JUNE IS MEMBERSHIP MONTH AT SNRW As reported at the last meeting and mentioned in the President s Corner, we are trying to increase the number of members and associates in our Club. So, here s the deal: If you bring a new member to the June meeting and they join SNRW, both you and our new member/associate will receive a very nice recognition gift. If your guest is unable to attend the June meeting, but you bring in their $25 for a member/$15 for an Associate, you will receive a very nice recognition gift. Consider bringing in your husband as an associate member it s only $15. Consider having you daughter and/or granddaughter join as a member it s only $25. Remember, as a member, you also become a member of the Nevada Federation of Republican Women and the National Federation of Republican Women. Our operating budget is based on membership dues and associate dues. All other income is primarily dedicated to financial support to our Republican candidates during election years. We have a new venue that will accommodate many more people, so let s fill the room. Questions regarding membership can be directed to 2nd Vice President/Membership Chair Nancy Brisack, nancybrisack@gmail.com or 775/
