1 NORTHSHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS' MEETING MINUTES November 25, 2014 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Northshore School District was held Tuesday, November 25, 2014, in the Administrative Center in Bothell, Washington. President Janet Quinn called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., followed by the flag salute. ATTENDANCE Present: Janet Quinn, Dawn McCravey, Sandy Hayes, Kimberly D Angelo and Amy Cast APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes for the Regular Board Meeting on November 12, 2014, the Special Board Meeting on November 12, 2014 and Two Special Board Meetings on November 20, MOVED by Sandy Hayes and SECONDED by Amy Cast to approve the minutes of the Regular Board Meeting on November 12, 2014, the Special Board Meeting on November 12, 2014 and two Special Board Meetings on November 20, MOTION CARRIED. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Election of Board President. President Quinn conducted the election for the office of President of the Board for Director D Angelo nominated Director Cast to serve as President of the Board for Director Hayes nominated Director Quinn to serve as President of the Board for With no further nominations, the nominations were closed. By roll call vote of 3 to 2, Director Quinn was re-elected President of the Board for Director Quinn resumed the office of President. Election of Board Vice-President. President Quinn conducted the election for the office of Vice President of the Board for Director Quinn nominated Director Cast to serve as Vice President of the Board for Director Hayes nominated Director McCravey to serve as Vice President of the Board for With no further nominations, the nominations were closed. By unanimous roll call vote, Director Cast was elected Vice President of the Board for Election of Legislative Representative. President Quinn conducted the election for the Legislative Representative of the Board for a two-year term. Director D Angelo nominated Director McCravey as Legislative Representative of the Board for a two-year term. Director Cast nominated Director Hayes as Legislative Representative of the Board for a two-year term. With no further nominations, the nominations were closed. By roll call vote of 3 to 2, Director Hayes was re-elected to serve as Legislative Representative of the Board for a two-year term. Election of Audit Committee Member. President Quinn conducted the election for the Audit Committee Member of the Board for Director McCravey nominated herself to serve as Audit Committee Member of the Board for With no further nominations, the nominations were closed. By unanimous roll call vote, Director McCravey was elected as Audit Committee Member of the Board for

2 Minutes of Meeting November 25, 2014 Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT Superintendent Larry Francois Acknowledged the tragic and senseless passing of former Woodinville High School graduate, Parker Moore Our thoughts and prayers are with the Moore family, friends and staff members who were close to Parker Many thanks to Woodinville High School administration and Heather Miller for their support of students and staff through such a difficult situation Congratulations to Bothell High School senior, Sophia McMahon, on her recognition by the College Board s National Hispanic Recognition Program Criteria for selection include performance on the PSAT in the junior year, being at least one-quarter Hispanic and achieving a minimum 3.0 GPA by the end of the junior year Congratulations to Woodinville High School senior, Peter Lawson, who opened the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra at Benaroya Hall last Sunday with a world premium original cello composition Peter is the president of the Woodinville High School orchestra and is in his 7 th year with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra With Kathleen and Carolyn, have continued presentations to staff and parent groups on our continued north end enrollment growth, mitigation strategies and updates on North Creek High School, grade reconfiguration and the boundary adjustment process and timeline Since the Nov. 12 board meeting, have met with the Fernwood and Kokanee PTAs and Shelton View staff Attended the monthly Northshore School District counseling meeting held at the Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWIT) on November 13 th Great opportunity to welcome our secondary counselors and thank them for all their efforts to support for our students, particularly given the ever changing nature of graduation requirements Counselors received a presentation and tour by LWIT staff to better familiarize them with opportunities available for our students at LWIT Next month, counselors will be holding their meeting at Cascadia Community College where they will receive a similar presentation by Cascadia staff These visits are an outgrowth of the work I ve been doing with the LWIT and Cascadia presidents as well as the superintendents from Riverview and Lake Washington school districts Many thanks to the Director of Career and College Readiness, Damen Schuneman, for facilitating the monthly meetings at LWIT and Cascadia Attended the monthly Northshore Schools Foundation Board Meeting with Director Hayes on November 13th Updated the Northshore Schools Foundation board on the recommendation and decision to open North Creek High School with grades 9-11 in the fall of 2017 Attended the Northshore PTSA Council Principals & Presidents Luncheon on November 13th Always a wonderful opportunity to visit with PTA leaders and enjoy a fantastic meal in a friendly, relaxed and positive environment

3 Minutes of Meeting November 25, 2014 Page 3 Attended the Northshore Schools Foundation Wine Walk at Country Village on November 15th; Directors Quinn and D Angelo were also in attendance Although very cold that night, it was a great event with lots of good shopping and wine tasting opportunities It was a very successful fundraiser for the Foundation, as well Met with Rep. Roger Goodman on November 18 th ; Directors Hayes and Cast also attended Wide ranging discussion about the upcoming legislative session, particularly efforts around McCleary and I-1351 Rep. Goodman confirmed what we re hearing from other legislators of the likelihood of multiple extended sessions and a very late adoption of the biennial budget Attended the Valerie Logan Luncheon at the Institute for Systems Biology on November 18th Valerie Logan is the wife of Dr. Leroy Hood, founder of the Institute for Systems Biology and inventor of the technology that made the Human Genome Project possible The work Hollywood Hills Elementary is engaged with around Project Lead the Way was spotlighted during a luncheon panel facilitated by former Superintendent of Public Instruction, Terry Bergeson Former Hollywood Hill principal, Scott Beebe, Hollywood Hill teachers, Kurt Archuleta and Jennie Knapp, and Hollywood Hill student, Ben Dippie, comprised the panel; current Hollywood Hill principal, Joann Todd, was also in attendance We appreciate the strong relationship we have with the Institute and their ongoing support of our professional development and transition to the Next Generation Science Standards Attended the 2014 Annual WSSDA Conference with the entire Northshore School District School Board November Enjoyed the time with board members at the conference Attended some informative sessions and have shared my notes from those with board members Especially appreciated the inspiring and motivational keynotes provided by Dr. Gene Sharratt, Executive Director of the Washington Student Achievement Council, and happy brain science guru, Scott Crabtree Wished everyone a safe and restful Thanksgiving holiday! ASSOCIATION AND PUBLIC COMMENTS Northshore PTSA Council Co-President Sherry Rudolph updated the Board of Directors on recent activities of the Northshore PTSA Council including the Principals and Presidents Luncheon and special presentations by social media expert Katie Greer at secondary schools. Marci Cheesebrough addressed the Board with concerns about support and funding for later school start times. CONSENT AGENDA Payment of the Bills Approved. 6 Minutes of Meeting November 25, 2014 Page 6 BOARD REPORTS AND COMMUNICATIONS Future Agenda Items Director McCravey suggested further investigation into the issue of substitute shortages. Director Hayes requested additional information and study around the role of high school counselors and the college entrance application process. Director D Angelo suggested further discussion of the draft of Public Participation at a future retreat. Liaison Assignments Board Members chose liaison assignments for the school year as follows: Representative to the Northshore Schools Foundation - Director Cast Representative to the Northshore PTSA Council Director D Angelo Representatives for the Frank Love Scholarship Award - Directors McCravey and D Angelo Representative to the SEPAC Organization Director Hayes Representative to the Enrollment Demographics Task Force Director Cast Representative to the WSSDA Large District Task Force To defer assignment pending further development of the task force Member Reports Dawn McCravey attended the WSSDA Conference in Spokane November Director McCravey provided no additional report. Sandy Hayes reported on her attendance at the 2014 Annual WSSDA Conference November 19-21, Northshore Schools Foundation board meeting, PTSA Principals and Presidents Luncheon, Multi- Cultural Day at Woodmoor and the Northshore Jazz Festival. Director Hayes also attended a meeting with Representative Roger Goodman. Kimberly D Angelo reported on her attendance at the SIP visit to Leota Junior High on November 4 th, the WSSDA Conference in Spokane November and the Northshore School Foundation Wine Walk. Amy Cast reported on her attendance at the Woodinville High School PTA meeting on November 14 th where Mike Funis provided a presentation about various phases of construction and room layouts. Director Cast attended the WSSDA Conference in Spokane November Janet Quinn reported on her attendance at the Principals and Presidents Luncheon on November 13 th noting the excellent conversations about how to create community in schools through the transitions ahead and about the practical aspects of challenge classes vs. regular classes. Director Quinn attended the Northshore Schools Foundation Wine Walk on November 15 th. Director Quinn attended the WSSDA Conference in Spokane November Of special note was the keynote speaker, Angela Maiers, who spoke about being brave in the decisions we make. President Quinn reviewed upcoming meeting dates with local senators and representatives, SIP visit to Sunrise Elementary and Conversations With The Board on December 2 nd and the Holiday Luncheon December 17 th. The Board discussed the scheduling conflict with the SIP visit to Fernwood and the Northshore Schools Foundation Luncheon on April 7th. The Board decided to move the Fernwood SIP visit to May 19 th.
