11 Public Meeting September 11, ITEM NO. 8 2 for counsel or Mr. Mazer? 3 (No response.) 4 VICE CHAIR HARRINGTON: Mr. Mazer, 5 welcome. Welcome home. Back. 6 MR. MAZER: Thank you. 7 VICE CHAIR HARRINGTON: Have you -- talk 8 a little bit about what you see happening in 9 Atlantic City now and the changes and the 10 opportunities. 11 MR. MAZER: Well, you know, we see still 12 continued pressure from neighboring states and 13 the convenience market that will continue to 14 grow and apply pressure. And I think one of 15 the things we need to do is look at the 16 potentially different forms of business to be 17 able to bring in here. 18 I'm excited for our convention and 19 meeting center that we're building. I think 20 that lends itself for an opportunity to tap a 21 market that doesn't presently come here or 22 comes here in a limited fashion. 23 So things like that are something that 24 we can continue to focus on. I think we 25 continue to focus on nongaming initiatives ITEM NO. 8 2 Food, beverage, entertainment have all been 3 something that we -- I think we hold an 4 advantage on. And we certainly have some 5 natural assets that nobody else offers. And 6 some of the -- one of the most glorious beaches 7 and oceans that are available anywhere. 8 VICE CHAIR HARRINGTON: Thanks. 9 MR. MAZER: So it would be nice to get 10 back into that. 11 CHAIR LEVINSON: Okay. You want to 12 maybe on the record say what what's going on at 13 the meeting center? Any dates? 14 MR. MAZER: You know what? We are 15 tearing it all up. We will start pounding 16 piles either, if not later this week, starting 17 Monday. Which will be highly disruptive but 18 because they will start right up against the 19 building and then start working its way out. 20 And so it will CHAIR LEVINSON: Good. 22 MR. MAZER: We'll close one of the 23 restaurants because we decided it was probably 24 not a good idea to have breakfast while your 25 plate was shaking ITEM NO. 8 2 (Laughter.) 3 MR. MAZER: And so we're moving that to 4 the buffet. But the piles will be started, and 5 it will loud and annoying. But it's necessary 6 to be done. 7 CHAIR LEVINSON: Okay. Great. 8 COMMISSIONER COOPER: I'd also like to 9 say welcome. 10 Miss Hughes mentioned that you began 11 your career in Would you just share with 12 us some of the highlights of that -- that have 13 happened along the way? 14 MR. MAZER: Well, sure. I started -- I 15 actually started gaming school at Atlantic 16 Community College in 1978 for Caesars. And 17 then we opened up in May of '79. I started as 18 a crap dealer. And then in those days, there 19 was a real shortage of licensed applicants. 20 And so very shortly -- actually, a thousand 21 hours or 1500 hours later, I was promoted to a 22 boxman and worked my way up and stayed in 23 the -- and ended up moving to Resorts and 24 stayed in the market until just about '90, the 25 late '80s. And then pursued a private company 29 1 ITEM NO. 8 2 in the Caribbean, but really went on 1991 into 3 the riverboat industry, which was new and 4 opened up the Paradise in Peoria, Illinois, 5 which was the second riverboat to open up in 6 the state of Illinois, which was the second 7 state to open up riverboat gaming. The first 8 state to open up with unlimited gaming, credit, 9 and what we consider normal gaming behavior. 10 Iowa was previously was very, very limited. It 11 had $5 maximum wagers. It had 200 maximum 12 losses. And Illinois opened it a little 13 full-fledged and did extremely well. 14 And this was in Peoria, Illinois, of all 15 places. And but it was -- it's a great town, 16 great community. In '95 I went to the 17 riverboat in Joliet, Illinois. At that time it 18 was called the Empress. It was privately owned 19 as well. And from there -- a very short period 20 of time from October. And then in December 21 they made me the general manager of their 22 Indiana operations in Hammond, Indiana, which 23 is literally a quarter of a mile from the 24 Chicago city limits and 15 minutes from 25 downtown Chicago. I opened that property and

12 Public Meeting September 11, ITEM NO. 8 2 stayed there through the acquisition by Jack 3 Binion where we converted it to a Horseshoe 4 Casino, and then subsequently when Harrah's 5 bought the Horseshoe out, at that time it was 6 Harrah's Entertainment, they kept me and -- 7 amazingly. 8 (Laughter.) 9 MR.
