1 PENNS MANOR AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION MINUTES OF MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2014 The regular meeting of the Penns Manor Area School Board of Education of September 11, 2014 was called to order by President, Robert Packer at 7:05 p.m. On roll call the following members were present:,,,,, and. Mrs. Eckenrode and were excused. The following administrators were present: Mr. Johnston, Mrs. Dolges, Mr. Grimaldi, and Mrs. Zeglen. Mr. Kudlawiec was excused. Mrs. Patterson was present as Assistant Board secretary. Mr. Ronald Saffron, Esquire was also present. PRESENTATIONS None APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion by, seconded by to add the following to the agenda; Under Curriculum; Senior Class Advisor, add motion to hire Kristin Kessler as Senior Class Advisor; Under Budget & Finance; add motion to approve school insurance proposal from Liberty Mutual; Under New Business; add motion to elect Kathy Swope as President of PSBA and motion to elect the slate of officers as presented by PSBA. Add motion to appoint Connie Patterson as Secretary pro-tempore for this meeting. Motion carried. Motion by, seconded by, to approve the agenda as amended. Motion carried. APPOINT SECRETARY PRO-TEMPORE Motion by, seconded by to appoint Mrs. Connie Patterson as Secretary protempore for the meeting of September 11, 2014 due to the absence of the Secretary and to note the appointment in the minutes of the meeting. CITIZENS REMARKS TO BOARD Mr. Greg Rebovich addressed the board regarding spiraling pension costs and asked the board to consider these costs when negotiating the teacher contract. responded. On roll call the following members voted: PROGRAMS UPDATE None REPORTS Acting Superintendent Mr. Johnston reported on the following Reviewed agenda items Thanked employees for a successful start of the new school year with all the changes Substitute High School Principal Mrs. Dolges reported on the following 6 th grade move to Jr. High went well, kids like it and parents are accepting Next Tuesday is back to school night Suicide prevention day assembly Elementary Principal Mr. Grimaldi reported on the following Next Tuesday Back to School night Distributed September newsletter Power Pak program 73 students will be participating in this program that sends food home with eligible students on the weekend once or twice a month. 3 Curriculum Committee -, Spokesperson Senior Class Advisor Motion by, seconded by, to hire Leanne Thome as a Senior Class Advisor effective immediately at the contracted rate of $1, as per the current expired Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Penns Manor Area School District and the Penns Manor Education Association. On roll call the following members voted: Signing Citations Motion by, seconded by, to authorize the following administrators of the district to sign citations in conjunction with the School Tobacco and Compulsory School Attendance Acts: Mrs. Michelle Dolges, Mr. David Grimaldi, Mr. Daren Johnston and Mrs. Kristen Zeglen. On roll call the following members voted: Out-of-State Field Trip FFA Motion by seconded by, to approve/disapprove the Penns Manor Area FFA along with advisor Gerald Hughes, to attend the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY from October 27, 2014 through November 1, The cost to the District would be $1, On roll call the following members voted: Mentors Motion by, seconded by, to approve the following teachers as mentors for the recently hired teachers listed below as per the induction program of the district for compensatory time. Grace Shellenbarger for Ben Murphy, recently hired Multiple Certification Teacher; Mary Niezelski for Andrew Lansberry, recently hired Physical Education and Health Teacher; Erica Lauer for Mary E. Sabatini, recently hired English Teacher. On roll call the following members voted: Abstained for Grace Shellenbarger, daughter; for others. 3

4 Senior Class Advisor Motion by, seconded by, to hire Kristin Kessler as a Senior Class Advisor effective immediately at the contracted rate of $1, as per the current expired Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Penns Manor Area School District and the Penns Manor Education Association. Budget & Finance Committee -, Spokesperson Affirm Budgetary Transfers - enclosure 6 Motion by, seconded by, to affirm the budgetary transfers for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, as listed in enclosure 6. On roll call the following members voted: Insurance Proposal Motion by, seconded by, to accept and approve the school insurance proposal from Liberty Mutual as presented by Walbeck Insurance. The commercial liability package shall include coverage for Property, Inland Marine, Automobile, General Liability, School Leaders Errors and Omissions, Crime and Excess Liability. The effective date of this insurance coverage will be October 1, 2014, with an expiration date of October 1, The total premium for the insurance proposal is $50,877 and payment of said premium is hereby approved. Buildings & Grounds Committee, Spokesperson Vo Ag/Maintenance Roof Replacement Motion by, seconded by, to accept the quote from L&L Roofing in the amount of $8,909.00, being the lowest quote received by the District, to replace the roof on the VoAg/Maintenance building as presented in the quote. On roll call the following members voted: 4

5 Athletics Committee -, Spokesperson Jr. High Volleyball Assistant Coach 2 Resignation Motion by, seconded by, to accept the resignation of Adelle Dolney as the Girls Jr. High Volleyball Assistant Coach 2, effective immediately; and to grant the Administration permission to post and advertise, if necessary, for this position. On roll call the following members voted: Jr. High Volleyball Assistant Coach 1 Motion by, seconded by, to hire Christina Young as the Jr. High Volleyball Assistant Coach 1 commencing immediately. All clearances are currently on file in the district office. The salary for this position is $2, as per the current expired Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Penns Manor Area School District and the Penns Manor Education Association. On roll call the following members voted: Softball Head Coach Motion by, seconded by, to hire Mary Niezelski as the Softball Head Coach commencing immediately. All clearances are currently on file in the district office. The salary for this position is $3, as per the current expired Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Penns Manor Area School District and the Penns Manor Education Association. On roll call the following members voted: Jr. High Boys Basketball Head Coach Resignation Motion by, seconded by, to accept the resignation of Thomas Carrick as the Jr. High Boys Basketball Head Coach, effective immediately, and to grant the Administration permission to post and advertise, if necessary, for this position. 6 Jr. High Boys Basketball Assistant Coach 1 Resignation Motion by, seconded by, accept the resignation of Steve Morfenski as the Jr. High Boys Basketball Assistant Coach 1, effective immediately, and to grant the Administration permission to post and advertise, if necessary, for this position. On roll call the following members voted: Jr. Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Motion by, seconded by, to hire Thomas Carrick as the Jr. Varsity Boys Basketball Coach commencing immediately. All clearances are currently on file in the district office. The salary for this position is $4, as per the current expired Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Penns Manor Area School District and the Penns Manor Education Association. On roll call the following members voted: Fall Sports Volunteers Motion by, seconded by, to approve the following as volunteers during the 2014 fall sports season, pending the receipt of all current clearances and completion of the concussion impact test. 7 Transportation Committee -, Spokesperson Bus Driver Approvals Motion by, seconded by, to approve the following as bus drivers and Substitutes for Tri County Transportation for the school year: Paul Gach and Rhonda Raybuck. On roll call the following members voted: Retirement Resignation Clawson Motion by, seconded by, to accept the resignation of Linda Clawson submitted to the district by letter dated August 5, 2014, with regret, as the elementary secretary/receptionist effective January 5, 2015, due to retirement; and to grant the administration permission to post and advertise, if necessary, for this position. Mrs. Clawson has been employed with the Penns Manor Area School District since January
