7 Notes on the Contributors Daniele Archibugi is a Director of the Italian National Research Council. He has worked at the Universities of Sussex, Naples, Cambridge and Rome. In he was Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science and in he was Lauro De Bosis Professor at Harvard University. He works on globalization, technological change and the political theory of international relations. He is an adviser to the European Commission, the OECD and several UN specialized agencies, and has worked on the reform of international organizations. Among his publications in the field of political theory, he has co-edited Cosmopolitan Democracy: An Agenda for a New World Order (1995) and Re-Imagining Political Community: Studies in Cosmopolitan Democracy (1998), and edited Debating Cosmopolitics (2003). Peter Beilharz is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Thesis Eleven Centre for Critical Theory at La Trobe University in Australia. He was Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard University in , and William Dean Howells Fellow at Harvard in He is Faculty Associate in Sociology at Yale University. He has published twenty books, including Imagining the Antipodes (1997), Zygmunt Bauman (1999), and most recently Postwar American Critical Thought (2005). He is now working on a major project tracking the antipodes across the twentieth century. James Brassett is a research student at the University of Warwick based in the ESRC Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation. His work covers theories of globalization, international political economy and ethics with a special focus on the normative possibilities presented by global civil society. He has co-authored an article with Richard Higgott, Building the Normative Dimension(s) of a Global Polity, in Review of International Studies (2003). Luis Cabrera is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Arizona State University West. He has published articles on cosmopolitan distributive justice and global political integration, and he is the author of Political Theory of Global Justice: A Cosmopolitan Case for the World State (2004). vii
8 viii Notes on the Contributors Roger Deacon is Honorary Research Fellow in Human and Social Studies and Honorary Lecturer in Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and managing editor of Theoria: A Journal of Social and Political Theory. He publishes in the fields of political philosophy, the history of ideas and educational theory, and his most recent publication is Fabricating Foucault (2003). His current research interests are in the origins of early modern education, and the art and politics of war. François Debrix is Associate Professor of International Relations at Florida International University. His publications include Re-Envisioning Peacekeeping: The United Nations and the Mobilization of Ideology (1999), Language, Agency and Politics in a Constructed World (2003, editor), and Rituals of Mediation: International Politics and Social Meaning (2003, co-editor). His work in the domains of international relations theory, postmodern theory and culture, and critical world order studies has been published in journals such as Alternatives, Geopolitics, New Political Science, Philosophy and Social Criticism, Postmodern Culture, Strategies and Third World Quarterly. He is currently working on a new book-length manuscript that explores the politics of fear-making in the transnational polity through a critical analysis of the mad cow crisis. Chamsy el-ojeili is Lecturer in Sociology at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He is the author of From Left Communism to Postmodernism: Reconsidering Emancipatory Discourse (2003), and co-editor of New Zealand Sociology. Mark Evans is Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at the University of Wales, Swansea. His publications include The Edinburgh Companion to Contemporary Liberalism (2001), Ethics in International Relations: New Directions (2004), Just War Theory: A Reappraisal (2005) and Liberal Justifications (2005). He is associate editor of Politics and Ethics Review. His research interests include human rights, international ethics, the ethics of individual character in liberalism, and the distinction between ideal and non-ideal theory in the analysis of moral and political problems. Patrick Hayden is Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at Victoria University of Wellington, and editor of Politics and Ethics Review. His publications include Cosmopolitan Global Politics (2005), America s War on Terror (2003, co-editor), John Rawls: Towards a Just World Order (2002), and The Philosophy of Human Rights (2001). His research interests include international ethics and human rights, theories of war and peace, democratic theory, and the

Douglas Kellner is George Kneller Chair in the Philosophy of Education at UCLA and is author of many books on social theory, politics, history, and culture, including Camera Politica: The Politics and Ideology of Contemporary Hollywood Film (with Michael Ryan); Critical Theory, Marxism, and Modernity; Jean Baudrillard: From Marxism to Postmodernism and Beyond; Postmodern Theory: Critical Interrogations (with Steven Best); Television and the Crisis of Democracy; The Persian Gulf TV War; Media Culture; and The Postmodern Turn (with Steven Best). Recent books include Grand Theft 2000: Media Spectacle and the Theft of an Election, The Postmodern Adventure: Science, Technology, and Cultural Studies at the Third Millennium (with Steve Best), and September 11, Terror War, and the Dangers of the Bush Legacy. Timothy W. Luke is Programme Chair, Government and International Affairs, School of Public and International Affairs, and University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science at Virginia Institute Polytechnic and State University. He is the author of numerous books, including Museum Pieces: Power Plays at the Exhibition (2002), Capitalism, Democracy, and Ecology: Departing from Marx (1999), Ecocritique: Contesting the Politics of Nature, Economy and Culture (1997), and Social Theory and Modernity: Critique, Dissent and Revolution (1990). Federico Merke is a PhD candidate at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) in Buenos Aires. He received his first degree from the Universidad del Salvador before studying at the University of Warwick where he attained an MA in International Studies. He is Deputy Director of Academic Affairs at the Argentine Council for International Relations and teaches International Relations Theory at the Universidad del Salvador. He recently published the article, Entre el 9/11 y el 11/9: Debates y Perspectivas sobre el Cambio en las Relaciones Internacionales, in Foro Internacional (2004). Darrel Moellendorf is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs at San Diego State University. He is the author of several articles and chapters in books, as well as Cosmopolitan Justice (2002). Additionally, he has guest co-edited special issues of Developing World Bioethics (with Michael Selgelid) on resource distribution and Journal of Ethics (with Gillian Brock) on global justice. A reprint of the latter will be published in 2005 in book form.
10 x Notes on the Contributors Michael A. Peters is Professor of Education at the University of Glasgow and the University of Auckland. He has research interests in educational theory and policy, and in contemporary philosophy, and has published many articles and books on these topics. Andrew Robinson is an activist based in Derby, UK, and a part-time tutor in the School of Politics, University of Nottingham. He recently submitted his doctoral thesis on the work of John Rawls having graduated with a First and Distinction in his BA and MA studies. His research focuses on social exclusion and oppressive discourse in contemporary political thought. He has published numerous scholarly articles and has extensive research and writing interests, including populism, postcolonial theory, Marxism and social constructions of delinquency and madness. Barry Smart is Professor of Sociology at the University of Portsmouth. His books include Foucault, Marxism, and Critique (1983), Michel Foucault (1988), Modern Conditions: Postmodern Controversies (1991), Postmodernity (1992), Facing Modernity (1999), and Economy, Culture, and Society (2003). Manfred B. Steger is Professor of Politics and Government at Illinois State University and Research Fellow at the Globalization Research Center at the University of Hawai i-manoa. He has written widely on ideologies of globalization, theories of non-violence and international politics. His book, Globalism: The New Market Ideology (2003) won the 2003 Michael Harrington Award of the New Political Science Section of the American Political Science Association and a new edition was published in Simon Tormey is Senior Lecturer in Politics and Critical Theory at the University of Nottingham. He is the author of numerous books and articles including Making Sense of Tyranny: Interpretations of Totalitarianism (1995), Agnes Heller: Socialism, Autonomy and the Postmodern (2001), Anti-Capitalism (2004), and Exploring Post-Marxisms (2005). He is series editor for Reappraising the Political with Manchester University Press (with Jon Simons) and on the editorial board of Contemporary Political Theory. His recent work concerns globalization and resistance, postmodern and neo-marxian theory, and the work of Wittgenstein, Deleuze and Guattari. Martin Weber is Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. His research interests are in international
