1 The Week Ahead October 2013 Agenda Committees and political groups meetings, Brussels Women on boards. The committees on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and Legal Affairs will vote on whether to require EU-listed companies to ensure, by 2020, that at least 40% of their non-executive board members are women. In 2012 only 15% of non-executive board members at the EU's largest companies were women. (Monday) Product safety. The Internal Market Committee will vote on two draft laws, to make it easier to detect unsafe goods and improve product traceability by overhauling country of origin rules. (Thursday) EU system for struggling banks. The Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will table plans to amend the proposed Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM), which would establish a single authority and fund for the resolution of failing banks. This proposal is part of the Banking Union package. (Monday) NSA surveillance. The Civil Liberties Committee will hold its seventh hearing on US surveillance in the EU. MEPs will first discuss whether the surveillance activities breached EU and international law and its impact on fundamental rights. (Monday) Plenary preparation. Political groups will prepare for the October plenary session in Strasbourg, which will feature votes on the EU budget for , the EU budget for 2014, the Horizon 2020 and Connecting Europe Facility programmes, the safety of medical devices, migratory flows in the Mediterranean, and the possible suspension of the SWIFT agreement in response to NSA surveillance. At this session, Aung San Suu Kyi is to be presented with the Sakharov Prize, awarded to her in President s diary. On Tuesday, President Schulz will meet Montenegro's President Filip Vujanović, (followed by press point) and Greece's Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. On Wednesday at the European Parliament in Brussels Mr Schulz will present the 2013 European Citizen's Prizes for work promoting closer integration among EU citizens. 10 European Citizen's Prize 2013 Each year, the European Parliament awards "The European Citizen's Prize". This prize is intended to be an award for exceptional achievements in the following areas: activities or actions by citizens, groups, associations or organisations having displayed an outstanding commitment to promoting better mutual understanding and closer integration between citizens of the Member States; or facilitating cross-border or transnational cooperation within the European Union. This could also include activities or actions by citizens engaged in long-term, cross-border or transnational cultural cooperation contributing to the strengthening of a European spirit. Preference is given to projects linked to the current European Year. This year 43 contestants, including individuals and associations, from 21 member states were selected for the prize in honour of their good work. The winners will be awarded their prizes on Wednesday by the President of Parliament, Martin SCHULZ at a special award ceremony.
