1 The Week Ahead January 2015 Political group and committee meetings, Brussels LIBOR/EURIBOR scandal. The Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will debate rules to improve the transparency and reliability of benchmarks that may affect key financial market rates or the pricing of retail financial contracts such as mortgages. The legislative proposal to regulate benchmarks at EU level was prompted by rigging of the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR)) and Euro Interbank Offered Rate (EURIBOR). (Thursday) Fight against terrorism/right to information. Europol s refusal to allow public access to information on the implementation of the EU-US Terrorist Finance Tracking Programme (TFTP), and the European Ombudsman Emily O Reilly s strong condemnation of it, will be discussed by the Civil Liberties Committee with Ms O'Reilly and the Europol Joint Supervisory Body, Europol's independent data protection supervisor. (Thursday) European Year for Development A Development Committee delegation will go to Riga (Latvia) for the opening event of the European Year for Development (Thursday and Friday) Plenary preparations. Political groups will prepare for the January plenary session in Strasbourg, where MEPs are set to vote on rules on GMOs, resolutions on the European Commission s 2015 work programme and media freedom in Turkey and welcome new European Council President Donald Tusk to debate the outcome of the December EU summit. MEPs will also review the work of outgoing Italian EU Council Presidency with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and discuss the incoming Latvian Presidency programme with Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma.
