TA: Daniel Weisz Argmed (dweiszar@uci.edu) Curse Descriptin: Over the last century, Latin Americans have frequently mbilized and armed themselves t btain fundamental plitical, ecnmic, and scial refrm. Majr revlutinary upheavals shk Mexic, Cuba, Blivia, and Nicaragua while many mre utbreaks have erupted albeit unsuccessfully. Nn-vilent attempts at scial change have als ccurred mst ntably in places like Guatemala and Chile. This curse will take a cmparative apprach t the causes, develpment, and cnsequences f selected scial revlutinary mvements. Alng the way, we will explre such tpics as scial justice, state frmatin, natinalism, leadership, gender, ethnicity, and the rle f internatinal affairs. The curse will examine these case studies thrugh lectures, discussins, vides, and primary / secndary surce readings. 2 Requirements: Each class will be a mixture f lecture and discussin alng with frequent vides. Grading is based n a midterm (25% / Octber 31), a final (35% / December 10), ne 4 t 5-page paper based n the readings (25% / Nvember 21), as well as attendance and participatin in discussin sectin (15%). The exams will cmbine shrt identificatins with lnger essays based n the assigned readings and material cvered in lecture. Success in the curse, therefre, will depend n attending lectures, finishing all readings by the assigned date, and preparing fr weekly discussin sectins.
