3 Dear All Readers, Karen Refugee Committee Newsletter and Activity Report September In this month, Karen Refugee Committee and camp committed attended the suicide prevention organized by Catherine, Emily and Shoshanna from John Hopkins University, from United States. The first workshop was held on September 25 th in Mae Sot with 20 participants representing organizations who work with migrant, IDP, and refugee populations. The second workshop was held on September 27 th in Umphang with 5 participants representing organizations who work with refugee populations. A few days after the workshops, on 1 st October, there was a mass murder committed by Stephen Paddock happened at Mandalay Bay during the The Route 91 Harvest Festival resulted in 58 death and more than 489 injured. Stephen later on killed himself. The motive behind this mass killing is not known. Many have assumed he has psycho problem and wanted to make headline before dying. We hope that this kind of accident shouldn t happen in our camps. A rumor story happen between some young people conversing through telephone saying that, the resettlement is opened only persons with physically challenged and therefore, we should cut of our hands to get this opportunity. It was a funny conservation but it also creates worry that this kind of rumor is spreading. This is not true! Another thing happens about the Annual Population Verification (APV) which will be conducted in October is that many people start questioning about the further reduction which they heard that another 30% will be deducted for coming year 2018 and again creates further anxiety. This is a difficult question for us to answer, as it is a difficult situation as refugee leaders. From religious side, prayer requests are being made for the safe return of the people to report during the verification. We earnestly need your support, encouragement and prayers as we start going through this refugee transition. 4 Monthly Activities Report September /09/2017 KRC s Finance Advisor went with KCBOs to Rangoon and met with EU representatives, Netherland and New Zealand embassies and discussed how to work together in the future. 04/09/2017 KRC- CMSP Coordinator met with TBC at CMSP office and discussed about Food Card and staff Job Description. 05/09/2017 KRC, CMSP, TBC and CC met at KRC office and discussed about issue related to Annual Population Verification for Only Maela, Umpheim and Nupo representatives attended. 5-6/09/2017 KRC and Capacity Building Officer attended Peace building training organized by TBC in Maesod. 13/09/2017 KRC-Education Coordinator presented Kare refugee issue organized by Chiangmai University and US Consulate at Chiangmai. 12/09/2017 KRC-Finance Advisor and Capacity Building Officer met with TBC and UNHCR and discussed about CIT and how to work together in the future in refugee camps. 14/09/2017 KRC-Joint Secretary along with TBC met with Maela camp committee in relation to AVP, Nutrition and shelter issues. 08/09/2017 KRC-CMSP Coordinator met with TBC at CMSP office and discussed about the staff contract for /09/2017 KRC-Education Coordinator met with ESP School committee in relation to school funding and future plan, in Maela camp. 19/09/2017 KRC Chairperson, Education Coordinator met with UNHCR, TBC at KRC office and discussed issue related to financial support for return. 21/09/2017 KRC-Capacity Building Officer and LAC went to Umphiem camp and provided training for MDRG specialist. 21/09/2017 KRC-Livelihood Coordinator went to Nupo camp and organized meeting with Livelihood committee in relation to livelihood future activities. 21/09/2017 KRC-CMSP Coordinator along with TBC went to Nupo camp and provided remaining Food Card holders and finishing the staff contract. 22/09/2017 KRC-CMSP Coordinator along with TBC went to Umphiem camp and met with camp committee, section committee, CBOs representatives and informed about the shelter issue /09/2017 KRC-Education Coordinator attended Suicide Prevention Workshop organized by John Hopkins University at Maesod. 26/09/2017 KRC-Livelihood Coordinator met with Umphiem livelihood Committee and discussed about (1) revise livelihood working structure, (2) planning for

5 18 livelihood activities. 27/09/2017 KRC-Livelihood Coordinator attended Livelihood Workshop Group meeting at IRC office. Other participants are from UNHCR, ACTED, COERR, HI, ADRA and KRC /09/2017 KRC-Health Coordinator and TBC met with physically challenged persons at Maela camp and also met with camp committee, Zone and Section committee and discussed about the supports for those people with special needs. 29/09/2017 KRC General Secretary along with TBC s Shelter Manager (2) went to Umphiem camp and discussed about shelter program support for with camp committee, section leaders and CBOs. 5

TBC coordinates with the Community Management and Preparedness Program to help with administration and management capacity in all seven camps. TBC provides KRC with administrative and organizational support and helps with staff remuneration. ADRA Adventist Development and Relief Agency. Starting January 2011, ADRA assumed responsibility for vocational training formerly implemented by ZOA in all seven camps. WEAVE Promotes women and children s education and self-reliance, focusing on household issues to help women achieve more power, rights, and opportunities in refugee communities. ARC American Refugee Committee. Supports medical and health facilities. M.I. Malteser International, formerly MHD Supports medical and health facilities. World Education Support for the Institute of Higher Education. COERR Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees. Food and educational support. EVI Involved with care and support for extremely vulnerable individuals. H.I. Handicap International. Supports handicapped refugees with prostheses and rehabilitation. It also organizes annual sporting events for the handicapped. UNHCR United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Supports registration process, protection, and ultimate safe repatriation. It is currently helping with resettlement issues. SMRU Shoklo Malaria Research Unit. Supports malaria control, prevention, and treatment. SVA Supports libraries in the camps. SAVE THE CHILDREN - Support teacher training and management capacity building. PPAT Planned Parenthood Association of Thailand. Supports family planning and preventive education in refugee camps. SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL Supports Burmese refugees in the camp to address sanitation issues. RIGHT TO PLAY Support Teacher subsidies, teacher training and capacity building.
