3 Dear All Readers, Karen Refugee Committee Newsletter and Activity Report July This month, 28 th of July is the 65 th birthday of the Tenth King of Thailand and it is also a holiday for all the Thai people. Due to the short notice of this important occasion, the Karen Refugee Committee could not organize and observe any activity to celebrate the King s birthday in any refugee camps. However, on behalf of the refugees, we would like to take this opportunity to express our wishes and prayers to the majesty the King, along with the royal Government and all the citizen of the Kingdom of Thailand, may you all be blessed and prosper and happy long live the King! Secondly, we have witnesse the second group of family who has reported to return through UNHCR. The interview and monitor was carried out by UNHCR and officials from the embassy of Myanmar (Burma). KRC would like to thank UNHCR for inviting to witness the process conducted in Maela camp, Umphiem camp and Nupo camp. At this juncture, KRC have met with the officials from the embassy and able to talk and share our concern and works to them amicably, though the embassy didn t directly contact with the refugee committee when they arrived. KRC also welcome the embassy to visit the camps and KRC in the near future. Finally, we would like to thank the Royal Government, Donors and NGOs and INGOs for your continuing support and sympathy towards the refugees. 3

4 Monthly Activities Report July /07/2017- KRC Livelihood Coordinator along with Maela Camp Livelihood Committee provided training on Ram pump and V-noch, method of drawing water without using electrical power and the designing water irrigation which was earlier provided by MFLF. There are 15 participants who have come from an agriculture background. 03/07/2017 KRC Education Coordinator met with Professor from Chiangmai University and shared about refugee situation and how KRC prepares for future. 04/07/2017 KRC General Secretary attended the fourth round closing ceremony of vocational program for intern students at Pa-An, Karen State. 4-7/07/2017 KRC and CIT monitored CIT activity in Nupo and Umphium camps. 5-6/07/2017 KRC Chairperson, General Secretary, Finance Advisor and Education Coordinator attended Committee for Refugee Return meeting organised by KNU at Lay Wah. 07/07/2017 KRC Livelihood Coordinator met with HI and discussed about the training for (1) HI will organize training for camp livelihood committee and share information related to livelihood activities and how to work together in the future. (2) HI shared information and result about livelihood meeting held at Rangoon. (3) HI has budget to support whether VRC or CIT office for information sharing relation to livelihood activities in the border areas and what KRC think about it. KRC livelihood coordinator will inform HI after meeting with KRC-EC on 10 th August, /07/2017 KRC General Secretary participated in the monitoring of refugee family who reported to return by the Myanmar embassy /07/2017 KRC Livelihood Coordinator attended meeting at Thamhim and Don Yang camps along with the TBC FSL s Coordinator, its two other staffs, camp s secretaries, and camp livelihood coordinator. The issues discussed in the meeting are ( 1) reviewing CAP activities in the camps and how it should be further support (2) reduction of 30% support to livelihood program (3) and livelihood activities inside the Karen State. 11/07/2017 KRC Finance Advisor and Education Coordinator attended pre-meeting with TBC and UNHCR for Stakeholder meeting at UNHCR office. 13/07/2017 KRC Finance Advisor attended meeting at Pa-An on Stakeholder consultation organised by UNHCR-Myanmar /07/2017 KRC Committee and PSO along with TBC staffs provided Security Detention Centre guideline training to security staffs of Mae Ramoe and Maela Oo camps. 14/07/2017 KRC Education Coordinator along with KRCEE Director went to Umphiem camp and met the OCEE and staffs and discussed about issues related to nursery teacher. 4

5 14/07/2017 KRC Chairperson and General Secretary attended meeting at Lay Wah on refugee security issue. 17/07/2017 KRC-CMSP Coordinator went to Nupo camp and discussed about the staff turnover issue with camp committee. 18/07/2017 KRC Chairperson and General Secretary attended World Life Skill Celebration at Maesod s Vocational College /07/2017 KRC Finance Advisor went to Thamhim and Doyang camps and shared about the CIT relationship with UNHCR to CIT staffs. 20/07/2017 KRC General Secretary attended MOI, UNHCR, NGOs and Umphiem Camp s bimonthly meeting in Umphiem camp /07/2017 KRC-CMSP Coordinator provided training to Thamhim and Doyang security staffs regarding security detention guideline. 21/07/2017 KRC Livelihood Coordinator attended training provided by HI at Maela camp. Other participants include camp s livelihood committee and other CBOs working in livelihood program. The training topics are: sharing livelihood program activities operating in refugee camps; and how to coordinate for future livelihood activities /07/2017 KRC Committee attended Borderwide, CMWG and Stakeholder meetings held at Maela camp. 27/07/2017 KRC General Secretary participated in Karen Youth Forum held at Maela camp and also have to opportunity to share about current camp s situation and information about Committee for Refugee Return. 28/07/2017 KRC Finance Advisor and Health Coordinator attended meeting in Maesod organised by KDHW in relation to birth registration in collaboration with Save the Children. 31/07/2017 KRC General Secretary went to Nupo camp to organise the fifth intership program to Karen State. 5

TBC coordinates with the Community Management and Preparedness Program to help with administration and management capacity in all seven camps. TBC provides KRC with administrative and organizational support and helps with staff remuneration. ADRA Adventist Development and Relief Agency. Starting January 2011, ADRA assumed responsibility for vocational training formerly implemented by ZOA in all seven camps. WEAVE Promotes women and children s education and self-reliance, focusing on household issues to help women achieve more power, rights, and opportunities in refugee communities. ARC American Refugee Committee. Supports medical and health facilities. M.I. Malteser International, formerly MHD Supports medical and health facilities. World Education Support for the Institute of Higher Education. COERR Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees. Food and educational support. EVI Involved with care and support for extremely vulnerable individuals. H.I. Handicap International. Supports handicapped refugees with prostheses and rehabilitation. It also organizes annual sporting events for the handicapped. UNHCR United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Supports registration process, protection, and ultimate safe repatriation. It is currently helping with resettlement issues. SMRU Shoklo Malaria Research Unit. Supports malaria control, prevention, and treatment. SVA Supports libraries in the camps. SAVE THE CHILDREN - Support teacher training and management capacity building. PPAT Planned Parenthood Association of Thailand. Supports family planning and preventive education in refugee camps. SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL Supports Burmese refugees in the camp to address sanitation issues. RIGHT TO PLAY Support Teacher subsidies, teacher training and capacity building.
